Congratulations are in order for Derrick A. Johnson, athletics operations manager and sports information director at Benedict College (S.C.), who was one of 23 athletic administrators selected to participate in the 2009-10 NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Females ...  The 12-month leadership program is designed to address the shortage of senior-level athletics administrators of color at NCAA member institutions and conferences ... During four professional-development sessions and one week-long workshop at the national office in Indianapolis, participants focus on leadership and administration; human-resource management; finance and fund-raising; and booster, public and media relations ... TRANSACTIONS
Central Michigan University announced that Jason Kaufman, former Western Illinois University assistant athletics director for media services and broadcasting, was hired as sports information director ... Kaufman comes to CMU from Western Illinois University, where he had been the assistant athletics director for media services and broadcasting since December 2005 ... He began his career as a graduate assistant at Western Illinois in 1997 before being promoted to assistant sports information director (1999-01) and director of media services prior to his most recent role.

Goucher College selected Scott Fitzgerald as assistant SID ... Fitzgerald, a 2007 graduate of York (Pa.) College, formerly was an assistant to the SID at Centenary (NJ) College ... Karen Auerbach was named associate director for athletic communications at Temple University ... Auerbach spent five years as the assistant media relations director at Northern Arizona University where she assisted in the day-to-day coverage of all 15 intercollegiate programs while serving as the primary contact for volleyball, women's basketball and women's swimming and diving ... Auerbach, who was involved in two website overhauls during her time at NAU, joined the Lumberjack staff after working at the University of Connecticut from 2003-2004 as an athletic communications assistant.

The Concordia University, St. Paul (MN) sports information staff added two new members - graduate assistant Jackie Lenz and intern Tim Evans ... Lenz is the daughter of CoSIDA Hall of Famer Ron Lenz (of South Dakota State University) ... After working on the gameday staff in football and men’s & women’s basketball for the past five years, Lenz decided to pursue the SID profession ... Evans is completing his undergraduate degree from NSIC-rival Bemidji State University ... He also played two years of football at Concordia before moving on to BSU earlier in his academic career. 

Several others were named to internship positions ... Cleveland State named Martin Rickman, 2009 graduate of Wake Forest, and Renee Adams, 2009 University of Dayton grad, sports information interns ... Two join Syracuse University as interns - Katie Baran and Lindsey Campbell ... Baran is a 2009 Syracuse graduate and former SU student assistant, while Campbell, a 2008 Syracuse graduate, comes back to SU after serving an athletic communications assistant at the University of South Florida... Phillip Dowden, former student assistant at Missouri Southern State University, named Abilene Christian athletics media relations intern.

There also are new graduate students in media relations at Arkansas Tech and South Carolina ... Arkansas Tech named Joseph Raasch, a former student assistant SID at Concordia [MN] College, sports Information graduate assistant, while at South Carolina, 2009 graduate Cory Burkarth stays at his alma mater as graduate assistant.
