PERSPECTIVE: Converting Video For Television Broadcasts (by Tom Riordan, UNC-Wilmington Assistant SID)

As a member of CoSIDA's New Media/Technology Committee, UNC Wilmington's Riordan offers simple instructions on how athletic communicators can produce footage to be run on their local newcasts.

How many times has broadcast media come out to a game or an event, shoot some and then leave and miss the highlight play or postgame reaction to a big win? Often television people may not even come out to the game, but would love to run a sound or video byte when they run a score during their broadcast.

Well anyone can now produce footage to be run on the local news. Here's how:

1.)  1. Shoot video and move files to computer.

2.)  2. Drop video files into program “Any Video Converter”

It’s free and available here: http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

3.)         3.) Click on Profile in upper right hand of program and select format.

4.)         4.) Start conversion process by clicking on CONVERT, listed in menu at the upper left  of program.

Our local affiliate uses the MPEG2 format and we send the files to them using their yousendit.com account. Find out what format your local stations use- it varies.

The whole process from moving files to converting takes less than 10 minutes and often less than that. We’ve gotten to the point where we just convert and send the raw footage and they’ll take care of the editing.

The quality of the footage of course depends on the camera and the operator, but looks tremendous on the television.
