Minutes from the CoSIDA Board of Directors Call (Jan. 14, 2010)

MINUTES FROM COSIDA BOARD CALL - JANUARY 14, 2010

President Justin Doherty did a roll call.

I. Doherty discussed the Division I Amateurism Cabinet. He said that he had been on a call Tuesday, with Charles Bloom (SEC) and Joe Browning (UNC Wilmington) also representing CoSIDA, the NCAA representative and Mike Rogers of  Baylor. He said the charge is for CoSIDA to provide input on legislation dealing with the commercialization of student-athletes. He said there was a good conversation. Doherty asked if any other board members who serve at Division I schools or leagues are interested in also serving in this capacity to let him know.

II. Doherty said he would like to set up calls with the CoSIDA committee chairs to get mid-year updates. He said he will send out an email to try and line up a date for the call and would like for as many board representatives to be on as possible.

III. Doherty said that Executive Director John Humenik, Eric McDowell, Bill Wagner and Rich Herman were attending the NCAA Convention and would be providing updates. (CoSIDA Director of External Affairs) Barb Kowal will then post those updates on www.cosida.com and send them out to the membership via email.
(EDITORS NOTE: Read the CoSIDA blog entries for Jan. 13, Jan. 14, Jan. 15).

IV. Doherty said that Humenik had asked all board members involved in the fund-raising process to get appropriate letters out to their contacts in January so we could get commitments in as soon as possible. '

V. Doherty said Brian Binnette of Sports Systems, Inc. was working on the wording for online convention registration for San Francisco with John Humenik, Barb Kowal and Dave Wohlhueter.

VI. Doherty said that the CoSIDA Ethics Committee had provided a draft that included
revisions to the CoSIDA Code of Ethics.

VII. Doherty said a conference call to select the Academic All-America Hall of Fame inductees for 2010 would  be held February 9 to get the process moving earlier.

VIII. Doherty said that the Football Writers Association would like to see all Division I school's football media  guides available on a DVD or set of DVDs and asked if CoSIDA could be involved to
help make it happen.

IX. First Vice President Larry Dougherty gave an update on the San Francisco Convention (July 4-7). He said everything  was moving along well. He said the plan was to have three strong theme days. July5th would be "Best Practices and Solutions." He said some of those panels were already established. He said he hopes to have  those finalized next month. July 6th will be "Strategic Communications." This day will include Ari Fleischer as both a luncheon speaker and a panelist. July 7th will be "Digital Summit Day." He said he hopes to launch the full schedule by the middle of February.

X. John Humenik joined the call from the NCAA Convention and gave an update. He said that Erik Christianson of the NCAA had asked about them doing a a presentation at the CoSIDA convention that deals with a that  strategic planning model for the CoSIDA membership. Humenik said that the NCAA had also renewed its  CoSIDA sponsorship for 2010 and had discussed some other ways to be involved with CoSIDA. Humenik also said that the NFL had shown interest in perhaps doing a April/May conference call with the CoSIDA membership on credentialing. Dougherty said that there could possibly also be a panel or breakout session on  credentialing at the CoSIDA Convention.

XI. Third Vice President Tom DiCamillo discussed the Special Awards process. He said
he wanted to solicit more nominations and asked about creating an online data base of nominees. He also asked about leaving the online nomination form active year-round. Geoff Hassard said that he also wanted to leave the scholarship application form online year-round. Kowal said that she would look at what is currently online for the special awards process and would report back. There was also discussion about the CoSIDA Hall of Fame and the number of possible inductees to be brought forward by the Veteran's Committee. The Constitutional Amendment that allows for a veteran's inductee refers to one additional inductee. The board felt that is how the process should proceed and if the Veteran's Committee has a compelling reason to bring more than one nominee forward, it would be considered at that time.

XII. Kowal said she was working to line up another call of the Hall of Fame Gala Committee, as well as the Strategic Branding Committee. She said that ICS currently does not have an IT person assigned right now for CoSIDA, with the resignation of former ICS employee Brian Lakie, CoSIDA but that Mark Frantz (VP of Technology) is assisting until that position is filled.

XIII. Kowal said that she also hoped to roll out the online convention registration the first week of February.

XIV. Kowal said that Mark Fratto (St. John's) was assisting with a webinar for early February on digital trends/best practices, and she said she will let everyone know when it is settled.

XV. Kowal said that the CoSIDA web re-design will include professional development issues and a resource library, which will be an immense part of the site.

XVI. Kowal gave an update on the fulfillment of the Academic All-America awards process and said things were going well. She said that certificates had been sent for the fall contests and that the plaques were on  there way to her. She said she will also send a letter to the institutions' president/chancellor and AD from Humenik and Doherty  on behalf of CoSIDA, alerting them to the student-athlete recipients.

The call was adjourned.
