Award Background:
This award honors the former longtime SID at Northern Illinois and CoSIDA Hall of Famer Owen "Bud" Nangle, who, in 1974, authored the CoSIDA Code of Ethics which is the standard for the profession to this day. Examples of award nominations are: the softball players who carried their injured opponent across home plate; a coach or administrator who honors a scholarship of someone unable to compete for humanitarian reasons; an administrator or department helping natural disaster victims in time of need. Nangle was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1993. In October of 2007, NIU re-named its press box the Bud & Joyce Nangle Press Box in honor of Bud and his wife, Joyce.

"The CoSIDA Ethics Committee established the Bud Nangle Award as an award for someone who does the right thing, sees past the school colors and makes the effort to stand up and take the ethically correct stance - just as Bud Nangle did throughout his illustrious career as head publicist for the Northern Illinois athletic department and throughout his work with CoSIDA," noted Bob Noss, Chair of the Ethics Committee.

"The recipient also does not have to be a member of CoSIDA. We feel this will bring about nominations for other athletic organizations through their CoSIDA representatives and, thus, bring added recognition to one of the Ethics Committee's goals of bringing positive publicity to the organization and notoriety to the new Code of Ethics within the organization," Noss concluded.
