Please read the application carefully and note that only the faculty athletics representative or the chief academic officer of the institution at which the nominee is a varsity student-athlete may nominate qualified candidates.
The Jim McKay Scholarship Program provides for one male and one female student-athlete to receive a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship in recognition of outstanding academic achievement (minimum of 3.5 cumulative grade point average) and potential to make a major contribution in the sports communications industry.

In 2008, the National Collegiate Athletic Association established the Jim McKay Scholarship Program as a means of recognizing the immense contributions and legacy of pioneer sports journalist Jim McKay. Under this program, one male and and one female student-athlete are annually awarded a $10,000 scholarship in recognition for outstanding academic achievement and potential to make a major contribution in the sports communication industry. McKay scholars will be recognized as having demonstrated a unique aptitude and commitment to the communications field and promises to be a future leader in the industry. McKay scholars also will demonstrate the highest level of professional integrity, including the principles of truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability, with the element of compassion that so infused McKay's long and storied career.
2010 Recipient: Ana Sebescen, Coppin State University
(only one awardee chosen in 2010)

Ana Sebescen, a former tennis student-athlete at Coppin State University, is the recipient of the Jim McKay Scholarship. She will receive a $10,000 award for her outstanding academic achievement.
Ana, earned her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in journalism, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.98.
Of Serbian-Hungarian nationality, she survived two wars in her native country as a youth. After seeing her native Serbia destroyed economically, politically and socially, she decided that she wanted to become a journalist to help instill change.
While participating in multiple community service activities, she also interned at the Baltimore Examiner where she became the first intern to publish twice on the cover page of the newspaper. She also pioneered the newspaper’s first multimedia article.
Sebescen is currently pursuing her master’s degree in broadcast journalism at the University of Maryland.
Qualifications:
To be eligible for consideration, nominees shall:
1. Have an overall undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of 3.500 or better (based on a maximum 4.000), or the equivalent in other recognized grading systems;
2. Have competed in intercollegiate athletics as a member of a varsity team at an NCAA member institution;
3. Be enrolled in graduate study at an NCAA member institution or be a graduating senior committed to enrolling in a graduate degree program within five years of being named a McKay Scholar;
4. Have demonstrated a unique aptitude and commitment to the communications field with the potential to make a contribution in the sports communications industry;
5. Ascribe to the highest levels of integrity, including the principles of truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability;
6. Have evidenced superior character and leadership;
7. Have an understanding and appreciation for the legacy of Jim McKay, his contributions to sport broadcasting and specifically his award-winning oratory on the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
