DII, DIII winter standings in Learfield Sports Director's Cup released

The first winter standings find Grand Valley State and Adams State (Colo.) atop the DII list, while Williams College, Calvin (Mich.) and Messiah (Pa.) are the top three institutions in DIII to date.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. In Division II, points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s. In Division III,
points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women’s and nine men’s.

The final Division II and III winter standings will be released Thursday, April 1, 2010.

DII: Ashland Scores a Winter-High 323.50 Points; Grand Valley State Leads Division II Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings

CLEVELAND – In the first set of winter standings, Ashland has tallied a winter-high 323.50 points, but Grand Valley State (Mich.) remains atop the overall Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings with 660.50 points.

The Lakers of Grand Valley State have recorded 280.50 points this winter, scoring in men’s and women’s swimming and men’s and women’s track and field.

Adams State (Colo.), who was 11th after the final fall standings, moved up to second after capturing the men’s track and field title, finishing fourth in women’s track and field and 13th in wrestling. The Grizzlies have 443 total points.

Shippensburg (Pa.) is in third with 399.25 total points, including 195.25 this winter. The Raiders recorded a top-10 finish in women’s track and field, finished 27th in women’s swimming, 28th in wrestling and 35th in men’s track and field.

In fourth overall with 370 points is Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers recorded points in four of five winter championships to date – men’s and women’s swimming and men’s and women’s track and field.

Rounding out the top five is Ashland, who has 348.50 total points. The Eagles recorded four top-10 finishes in the winter championships (men’s and women’s swimming and men’s and women’s track and field) and finished 36th overall in wrestling.

To date, five winter NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: Adams State (men’s track and field), Lincoln (Mo.) (women’s track and field), Drury (Mo.) (men’s and women’s swimming) and Nebraska Omaha (wrestling).

The final Division II winter standings will be released Thursday, April 1, 2010.


Williams (Mass.) Keeps Top Spot in the First Winter Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings
 
CLEVELAND – Williams continues its lead in the first winter Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings with 534.75 total points. To date, the Ephs scored 267.75 points in the winter sports (men’s and women’s track and field and wrestling). Calvin (Mich.) earned 66 points in women’s track and field to increase its total points to 415 overall to remain in second.

Messiah (Pa.) jumped to third in the first set of winter standings after tallying 77.75 points in women’s track and field and wrestling. The Falcons have 367.75 total points.

Wisconsin La Crosse jumped from 43rd in the final fall standings to fourth overall after tallying a winter-high 247.75 points. The Eagles scored in all three winter championships that have taken place to date – men’s and women’s track and field and wrestling.

Rounding out the top five and just .75 points shy of fourth place is Washington University (Mo.) with 347 total points, including 28 points in men’s track and field.

Three winter NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: North Central (Ill.) (men’s track and field), Wartburg (Iowa) (women’s track and field) and Augsburg (Minn.) (wrestling).
