Jay Stancil Earns 2010 Ike Pearson Award as Outstanding NAIA Sports Information Director

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is proud to announce that Jay Stancil, Sports Information Director at Union College (Ky.), is the recipient of the 2010 Clarence “Ike” Pearson Award. The honor is named for the former statistical crew chief for the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship and is given annually to an outstanding NAIA sports information director.

The award, in its 34th year, will be presented at the Ike Pearson Awards Luncheon on July 3 at the annual NAIA-Sports Information Directors Association Convention (NAIA-SIDA) in Atherton, Calif. Menlo College will host this year’s event.

“I am genuinely humble and grateful to be receiving the Ike Pearson Award,” said Stancil. “It is a great honor to be included among such great sports information directors, many of whom I consider mentors as well as good friends. I am grateful for all the support and encouragement Union president Edward de Rosset and athletic director Darin Wilson continually give me as well as the entire coaching staff and athletic department."

"Last and certainly not least, I share this honor with my family," Stancil concluded. "My wife Genople has been nothing but gracious, loving and supportive as I do the job I love, and my children, Jayson and Haylee, have been kind enough to share their daddy with the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs. This award is for them.”

NAIA-SIDA is the professional association for sports information directors with the NAIA. The Clarence "Ike" Pearson Award is the association's highest honor and recognizes its honoree for accomplishments and service performed over a career. Criteria for nomination include at least five years as a member of NAIA-SIDA and outstanding service to the profession and the NAIA at the conference and national levels.

Stancil has been the SID at Union since August of 1999. Some of his additional duties have included serving as Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) liaison, assisting with athletic fundraising efforts and overseeing athletic archives and photography.

He is an active member of NAIA-SIDA and CoSIDA. In that time span, he has received 44 various NAIA-SIDA publication awards, including three first-place awards, and two College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) writing awards.

When the NAIA had regional formats, Jay was the Region XII Information Director (2005-08) and chaired the Region XII Player of the Week Committee. He is currently on the national Player of the Week Voting Committee and was a member of the statistical crew for the 2006-07 Football National Championship games in Hardin County, Tenn. He has been the Media Coordinator for various conference and regional events including AAC soccer, basketball and baseball tournaments as well as regional men’s soccer and baseball championships.

Jay is currently the First Vice President of the NAIA-SIDA Board. He has served seven consecutive years on the NAIA-SIDA Publications Committee. He has volunteered his services on various NAIA-SIDA workshop panels to help educate and improve the Sports Information profession.

Prior to Union, Jay was the Sports Editor at the London-Laurel (Ky.) News Journal from 1997-99 and the Sports Editor at the Corbin Times-Tribune (Ky.) from 1994-97. He is a 1994 graduate from Carson-Newman College (Tenn.) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Arts.

“Jay has been employed at Union College since August of 1999,” said Union Athletics Director Darin Wilson in a recommendation letter. “Since that time, he has made a tremendous impact on our athletic department. Not only is Jay a highly-accomplished writer but he is also a person of high character and discipline.
