Edinboro University’s Bob Shreve earns CoSIDA recognition for 25 years in sports information field

EDINBORO, Pa. – When the 2009-10 athletic campaign, Bob Shreve will have concluded his 11th year as the sports information director at Edinboro University and his 27th year overall as an SID.

For Shreve, much of his professional career has been spent servicing the athletic community in the lone tip of northwestern Pennsylvania that has direct access to the Great Lakes.

On Tuesday, July 6, Shreve will receive his 25-Year Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America in San Francisco during the organization’s annual convention. The presentation will take place during the awards luncheon at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis.

Shreve began his career as a sports information director at Frostburg State College in 1982, serving at the western Maryland school for two years.

That was followed by a four-year stint as the SID at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa., where he also served as assistant director of athletics, was the softball coach for a season, and coached the baseball team for a year.

In the spring of 1988 Shreve assumed the duties of general manager of the Erie Orioles, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles in the New York-Penn League. While working in professional baseball he remained active in collegiate publicity, holding the role of publicity director for the Mideast Collegiate Conference - a n NCAA Division II league.

After two years in professional baseball, Shreve returned to the collegiate ranks as the sports information director at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He spent one year with the Golden Rams before returning to his hometown of Erie, Pa. as the sports information director at Gannon University in the summer of 1990.

Shreve would spend almost 10 years at Gannon before making the short transition to Edinboro in November of 1998, assuming the duties of director of sports information and promotions.

Shreve has earned numerous CoSIDA awards for his publications, including three "First in the Nation" honors for men’s basketball media guides at Gannon, and "First in the Nation" for football media guides at both Mercyhurst and Edinboro.

In addition, he has helped publicize numerous All-Americans, including Gannon basketball player Troy Nesmith who was recognized as the national player of the year, and two-time Harlon Hill Trophy national finalist Trevor Harris of Edinboro.

Shreve has been an active supporter of the Academic All-America program, serving as a district coordinator since 1993 and this year taking over as a national coordinator. He also has served as the national coordinator for the Daktronics Men’s Basketball All-America Team since 1996.

In addition to his sports information duties, Shreve has been an active participant in area sporting events. He currently serves as the public address announcer or official scorer for the Erie SeaWolves, the Detroit Tigers Class AA affiliate, and is a statistician for the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA D-League.

Shreve and his wife of 28 years, Debbie, reside in Erie with their three children - Brian, a former football player who recently earned his graduate degree at Edinboro; Julie, a recent graduate of Slippery Rock University; and Kelly, a junior in high school.
