Wingate’s David Sherwood will receive 25-Year Award July 6

WINGATE, N.C. – Wingate University Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information and Game Operations David Sherwood will receive the College Sports Information Director’s of America 25-year Award on Tuesday, July 6, in San Francisco, Calif.

Sherwood will accept the honor at a luncheon ceremony during CoSIDA’s annual convention at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis.

The CoSIDA 25-Year Award is presented to sports information directors who have completed 25 years in the profession.

A 1985 Wingate graduate, Sherwood has helped Wingate student-athletes earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® honors 34 times since 2000, the third highest total in NCAA Division II. The 43 Academic All-America® winners in the school’s history are tops among South Atlantic Conference schools.

Wingate leads the SAC with 52 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete awards, recognizing one outstanding student-athlete in each of the 14 conference-sponsored sports.

Sherwood began his career in 1985 as Wingate’s sports information director. He served in that role until 2004 when he was elevated to his current role. Sherwood also served as the interim softball coach from 1990-93 and has been the Wingate Baptist Church minister of youth since 1990.

Sherwood’s involvement with CoSIDA includes a one-year stint on the Membership Services Committee and 15 years as a member of the Academic All-America® committee. He has been part of the Daktronics All-American and the NCCSIA All-State committees.

In 2008, Sherwood captured the AVCA Grant Burger Media Award for the South Region (2008), while in 2007 he received the Wingate University Faith Award and the Wingate University Service Award.

One of the most genuine human beings in all of CoSIDA, Sherwood was presented the Bob Kenworthy Award in 2003.
