TOWSON, Md. – Senior catcher Jim Klocke of Southeast Missouri State and
senior pitcher Matt Schuld of St. Thomas (Minn.) headline the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Baseball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Klocke and Schuld have been chosen as the winners of the Academic All-America® of the Year award in the University and College Divisions, respectively. A business administration major with a 3.94 grade point average (GPA) and a minor in finance,
Klocke was a second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division selection as a junior
. A four-year starter at catcher for the Redhawks, he was named first team All-Ohio Valley Conference as a sophomore and junior.
Honored as a third team Louisville Slugger All-American in 2009, he batted .394 with nine home runs and 48 runs batted in. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Klocke has led Southeast Missouri State to a 30-23 record and a berth in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament this weekend. The Redhawks are the number four seed at the OVC Tournament at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn. One of ten finalists for the Lowe’s SENIOR Class Award, he is batting .371 with 21 doubles, 13 home runs and 66 runs batted in. He has also appeared in six games as a relief pitcher.
A .363 hitter in his career, Klocke ranks second in school history with 280 career hits. He also ranks among the Redhawks’ all-time leaders with 58 doubles and 32 home runs. He already holds the school record with 190 runs batted in. Klocke, who has started all 211 games of his college career, had a 25-game hitting streak earlier this season. One of the toughest hitters in the nation to strike out, he has been selected as a semi-finalist for the Johnny Bench Award as the nation’s top collegiate catcher based on athletic ability, sportsmanship, team leadership and character. He was drafted by St. Louis in the 46th round of the amateur draft last June.
Honored as an NCAA Division III All-American in 2009,
Schuld was a third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division selection last year. A business major with a 3.69 GPA, he led St. Thomas to the 2009 NCAA Division III national championship. En route to a 12-1 record last season, he won two games in the Division III College World Series. In 2009, he posted a 9-0 record against nationally-ranked teams.
As a senior, he led the Tommies to a 35-9 record and another NCAA Tournament berth. He posted a 10-1 record with one save and a 2.05 E.R.A. In 83.1 innings, he recorded 80 strikeouts with only 27 walks. A two-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, he was honored as the MIAC’s Pitcher of the Year in 2010. A native of Plymouth, Minn., Schuld compiled a career record of 30-5. In 47 appearances, he has 247 strikeouts. His 30 career victories set a MIAC record. The Tommies’ quest for a second straight national title came to an end in the fourth round of the NCAA Midwest regional tournament over the weekend.

Senior first baseman David Towarnicky of Appalachian State, a third team member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division Baseball team in 2009, joins Klocke on the first team as the only repeat selections on the first team.
Senior pitcher Matt Ridings and senior second baseman Matt Payton of Western Kentucky are the lone teammates on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division Baseball first team.
Senior pitcher Austin Fleet of Coastal Carolina, senior infielder C.J. Cullen (Portland) and
junior infielder Paul Hoilman (East Tennessee State) were also named to the first team.

A three-year starter at first base for the Mountaineers,
Towarnicky is a banking and finance major with a perfect 4.00 GPA. A pre-season All-Southern Conference selection, the New Bern, N.C. native is batting .302 with 38 runs scored. He has helped Appalachian State post a 35-16-1 record while hitting 11 doubles and eight home runs with 43 runs batted in. He will lead the seventh-seeded Mountaineers into the Southern Conference championship tournament at Charleston, S.C. this weekend. One of eight recipients of Southern Conference Postgraduate scholarships, he plans to conduct postgraduate research in the area of microfinance and the financial needs of poverty-stricken areas of the world.
Ridings and
Payton led Western Kentucky to a 35-21 mark as the Hilltoppers seek their second Sun Belt Conference title in the last three years. WKU is seeded eighth at this weekend’s Sun Belt Tournament at Murfreesboro, Tenn.
A business management major with a 3.74 GPA,
Ridings is one of the winningest pitchers in conference history. Honored as the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week five times in his career, he has compiled a 9-1 record as a senior with a league-leading 3.01 E.R.A. In 92.2 innings of work, Ridings has 90 strikeouts and only 17 walks. A two-time All-Sun Belt Conference second team selection, the Franklin, Tenn. native has a very impressive career record of 34-9. As a sophomore, he led the Hilltoppers with 10 victories.
A four-year starter at second base,
Payton is an exercise science major with a 3.82 GPA. The Hilltoppers’ second-leading hitter with a .363 batting average, he leads the team with 62 runs scored. With ten triples, he is ranked third in NCAA Division I. He also has 14 doubles, seven home runs and 55 runs batted in. An outstanding defensive player, Payton has a .973 fielding percentage and has made fewer than 20 errors in his career while handling more than 900 fielding chances. A native of Louisville, Ky., he already holds the school record for triples in a career. He helped WKU win the Sun Belt championship last season.
A business management major with a 3.78 GPA,
Fleet has helped fourth-ranked Coastal Carolina post a 47-7 record, including a perfect 25-0 mark in the Big South Conference. The ace relief pitcher for the Chanticleers, he has posted a 5-1 record with seven saves in 25 appearances. The Edmond, Okla. native has a 1.99 E.R.A. and he ranks second in the Big South in saves. A member of three Big South Conference championship teams, Fleet has posted a 21-8 career record. Last year, he was named to the all-tournament team at the Big South Championship. Coastal Carolina is the number one seed for the Big South Tournament at Rock Hill, S.C. this weekend.
A three-year starter at first base,
Cullen is Portland’s second-leading hitter with a .341 batting average. A computer science major carrying a 3.99 GPA with a minor in mathematics, the Seattle, Wash. native is the seventh-leading hitter in the West Coast Conference. He has helped the Pilots compile a 31-17 record while hitting four home runs with 32 runs batted in and 37 runs scored. An outstanding defensive player with a .993 fielding percentage, he has made only three errors in 414 fielding chances this season.
The only junior on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division Baseball first team,
Hoilman is a mathematics major with a 3.93 GPA. A pre-season All-American pick, he is having one of the finest seasons in East Tennessee State baseball history. The Atlantic Sun Conference leader with a .428 batting average, Hoilman is the 10th-leading hitter in NCAA Division I. He is also second in the nation with 76 runs scored and 77 runs batted in. The Atlantic Sun leader with a .874 slugging percentage, he leads the Atlantic Sun with 23 home runs. A first team All-Atlantic Sun Conference pick as a sophomore, the Johnson City, Tenn. native already has 43 home runs and 163 RBI’s in his career. With a 30-26 record, the Buccaneers will play for the Atlantic Sun championship this weekend in Nashville.
A four-year starter in centerfield for Nebraska,
Belfonte is a finance major with a 3.72 GPA. A three-time selection as first team Academic All-Big 12, he led the Cornhuskers with a .376 batting average. The seventh-leading hitter in the Big 12, he led Nebraska with 49 runs scored, 82 base hits and 37 runs batted in. The Kansas City, Mo. native hit 13 doubles and seven home runs. Belfonte, who led Nebraska to a 27-27 record, is a finalist for the Nebraska Male Student of the Year Award. An excellent defensive player, he had a .984 fielding percentage.
Named to the Atlantic Sun all-conference first team as a junior,
Hale is a criminal justice major with a 3.71 GPA. A four-year starter in the outfield, he leads North Florida with a .387 batting average. Hale, who already holds school records for career doubles and career total bases, has nine home runs with 58 runs batted in, both team highs. A starter in all 55 games, he has 20 doubles and has scored 53 runs. A two-time selection as Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, the Lakeland, Fla. native has led the Ospreys to a 29-26 record and second place in the conference. The Ospreys will play for the Atlantic Sun Tournament championship this weekend in Nashville.
A chemistry major with a 3.89 GPA,
Lee is a two-year starter in right field for South Dakota State. The leading hitter for the Jackrabbits, he is batting .404 with a team-leading 58 runs scored. He also leads the team with 19 doubles, nine home runs and 58 runs batted in. One of the top hitters in the Summit League, Lee has helped South Dakota State post a 37-19 record. SDSU is the top seed at the Summit League Tournament this weekend in Tulsa, Okla. A native of Mason City, Iowa, Lee was named to the Academic All-Summit League team as a junior.
An economics major holding a 3.52 GPA,
Choy rounds out the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division Baseball first team as the designated hitter. The second-leading hitter for Canisius, he is batting .379 with seven home runs and 55 runs batted in. The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native has scored 58 runs and has 13 doubles with a .547 slugging percentage. A two-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) pick, he ranks among the top 10 hitters in school history. Choy has led the Golden Griffins to a 37-19 record and the MAAC regular season title. Canisius is the top seed at the MAAC Tournament this weekend at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y.

senior outfielder Camden Mamigonian (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) earned first team honors in 2010 after making the second team last season.

A three-time pick as a first team All-Liberty League outfielder,
Mamigonian led RPI to a 24-16 record. A physics major with a 3.71 GPA, he batted .378 as a senior and led the Liberty League with seven home runs and a .622 slugging percentage. A first team All-Region selection as a junior, he scored 33 runs and had 36 runs batted in. A native of Dover, N.H., Mamigonian is a member of the Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honor Society. Mamigonian finished his career with a .371 batting average, 50 doubles, 24 home runs and 163 runs batted in.
A first team All-Presidents Athletic Conference second baseman,
Fishburn is a sports entertainment and marketing major with a 3.96 GPA. The PAC leader with 56 runs batted in, he batted .386 and scored 55 runs. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he led Thomas More to a 33-16 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament where the Saints finished as regional semi-finalists. A three-time member of the PAC Academic Honor Roll, Fishburn also hit 11 doubles and seven home runs as a senior.
A junior finance major carrying a 3.95 GPA,
Stallone was named first team All-Landmark Conference for the second year in a row despite missing 18 games due to an injury. He batted .475 in 22 games and scored 32 runs. Stallone hit seven doubles with 18 runs batted in. He also stole 17 bases in 17 attempts. A .409 hitter in his career, the South Plainfield, N.J. native has a .501 slugging percentage. A second team All-ECAC South selection last year, he is a member of two academic honor societies.
Stallone is joined in the outfield by
Champagne, his teammate at Scranton. A member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Baseball third team in 2008, Champagne is an economics major holding a 3.88 GPA. Named second team All-Landmark Conference twice in his career, he batted .369 as a senior with three home runs and 26 runs batted in. He also scored 35 runs. The Mt. Bethel, Pa. native also pitched in eight games for the Royals and compiled a 2-5 record. He finished his career with a .362 batting average.
A History major with a 3.97 GPA,
Schisler completes the outfield on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Baseball first team. A first team All-Iowa Conference selection, the Morrison, Ill. native led Coe with a .416 batting average. Schisler also led the Kohawks with 42 runs scored and 37 runs batted in. Schisler also hit 12 doubles and three home runs. The winner of the Courtney Award as Coe’s Male Athlete with the highest G.P.A., he ranks third in his class academically. As a senior, he led Coe to a 25-18 record.
An electrical engineering major with a 3.95 GPA,
Cogan earned second team All-Midwest region honors for Missouri Science and Technology. A starter in 48 games for the Miners, he batted.348 as a senior. In addition to scoring a team high 40 runs, he hit 15 doubles, 3 triples and 2 home runs with 24 runs batted in. While leading Missouri S & T to a 19-33 record, the Missouri City, Tex. native finished his career as one of the top offensive players in school history.
A first team All-Gulf South Conference East Division selection at shortstop,
Koenigsfeld led 11th-ranked Valdosta State to a 43-17 record, the Gulf South Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. A Middle Grades Education major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Koenigsfeld batted .386 for the Blazers. A three-year starter at shortstop, the New Port Richey, Fla. native led the Blazers with 59 runs scored. Koenigsfeld also had 19 doubles and 47 runs batted in. As a junior, he was named to the NCAA Regional all-tournament team and also garnered second team All-Gulf South honors.
Whittington was a third team NCBWA All-American shortstop in 2009. A physical education, wellness and leisure major carrying a 3.93 GPA, he earned All-Gulf South Conference first team honors twice. As a senior, he batted .390 while leading fifth-ranked Southern Arkansas to a 47-10 record and a second place finish at the NCAA Division II South regional. Whittington also led the Muleriders with 85 runs scored, 56 runs batted in and 22 doubles. The Texas City, Tex. native set a school record with a 37-game hitting streak during the 2010 season. He finished fifth in the Gulf South Conference with 25 stolen bases and finished his career with a school record 14 triples.
A second team All-Liberty League selection,
Goerold is the other pitcher on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Baseball first team. A junior with a major in financial information analysis and a perfect 4.00 GPA, he posted a 5-3 record with a 2.59 E.R.A. while leading Clarkson to a 19-18 record. In 62.2 innings of work, he had 37 strikeouts and 12 walks. A Presidential Scholar, the Clifton Park, N.Y. native led the Liberty League with six complete games and two shutouts this past season.
A two-year starter at catcher,
Swarr has led number one-ranked Johns Hopkins University to a 43-5 record and the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic regional championship. With a school record-tying 43 victories, the Blue Jays will be competing in the Division III College World Series at Appleton, Wis. An applied mathematics and statistics major with a minor in economics, Swarr has a 3.45 GPA. He is the Blue Jays’ third-leading hitter with a .419 batting average. A two-time All-Centennial Conference first team selection, the Radnor, Pa. native has led Hopkins to back-to-back conference titles. Swarr also ranks among the team leaders with 38 runs scored and 55 runs batted in. An outstanding defensive player, he has a .996 fielding percentage.
A graduate student who earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy,
Sandford has a 3.90 GPA while working on his MBA at the University of Redlands. A second team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection at designated hitter, he batted .393, third on the team. A starter in all 40 games for the Bulldogs, Sandford helped Redlands post a 29-11 record. A native of Santa Barbara, Cal., he led the Bulldogs with 55 runs scored while belting four home runs with 41 runs batted in.
