Hawaii Pacific's John Barry selected as inauguaral PacWest SID of the Year
PHOENIX, AZ- For his outstanding efforts in the sports information field, Hawaii Pacific University's John Barry has been selected as the inaugural Pacific West Conference Sports Information Director of the Year.
The PacWest announced the award on Monday, June 21, following voting by the conference's sports information directors.
"It is an honor to be recognized by my peers who do outstanding work in their own right,' Barry said. "I have learned lot about the profession in my first three years at HPU. Working in the PacWest has helped me grow as a sports information director. It is a tremendous honor when your peers recognize your work."
The PacWest SID of the Year award recognizes a sports information director or assistant SID in the conference whose work during the course of the year exemplifies the professionalism and passion for the sports information field.
Barry was outstanding in his coverage of the NCAA II Softball National Championship as his Sea Warriors claimed the crown. He also promoted numerous postseason teams and student-athletes who captured awards.
Each PacWest member school was permitted to nominate a sports information director or assistant for the honor. Barry, now in his third year at HPU as the sports information/marketing director, was an overwhelming choice by his peers.
Prior to his current position, Barry served as the men's assistant soccer coach at Chaminade University and was a physical education instructor and head boy's varsity soccer coach at the Saint Louis School.
A 1994 graduate of Iolani School where he lettered in both football and soccer, Barry earned an All-State selection as a kicker on the football team his senior year and was a two-time All-State pick as a goalkeeper on the soccer field.
Prior to returning to the islands in 2004, Barry served as the assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Richmond in Virginia. During his two seasons, the Spiders won the Atlantic 10 Conference and earned an NCAA Division I Tournament berth. Barry left Richmond and became an Internet marketing consultant for the Indiana Pacers and worked event management for the Seattle Supersonics.
He holds a bachelor of arts in psychology from Lafayette College in Eastern Pennsylvania and a master's in sport management from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. A four-year member of the Lafayette men's soccer team, Barry started in net during his junior and senior years in 1996 and 1997 for the Division I program.
A host of HPU Sports Beat, a weekly Sea Warriors sports talk show, Barry currently resides in Honolulu.
