NORFOLK, Va. – Veteran Old Dominion Sports Information Director Carol R. Hudson, Jr., has been selected for induction into the College Sports Information Director’s of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame.
Hudson will be inducted during the 2010 CoSIDA Hall of Fame Gala on Tuesday, July 6, at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis in San Francisco, Calif.
Hudson has served the collegiate sports information profession for more than 30 years, starting as the sports information director at Hampton University from 1981-85 before moving into the same role at Old Dominion University in 1985.
An active member of CoSIDA, Hudson served a total of six years on the organization’s board and received CoSIDA’s 25-Year Award in 2008. He currently chairs the CoSIDA Scholarship Committee.
Hudson is a member and past president of the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) organization and the Black Sports Information Director’s of American (BCSIDA), and is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
He played a key role in the start-up of the Virginia SID organization. Under the umbrella of VaSID, Hudson has coordinated the annual Virginia Division I institution all-sport competition for the past 26 years, which recognizes the university with the highest win-loss percentage. Thanks to Hudson’s diligence, the all-sport winner is now recognized and presented an award from the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
At Old Dominion, Hudson is a member of the Hall of Fame Committee and is active with the department's Monarch ReachOut community service program. He also has been a key member among the Colonial Athletic Association sports information directors.
A 1972 graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School, Hudson was the manager of his high school basketball team, which was coached by Ed Fraim (ODU '64), Old Dominion's former assistant athletic director for fundraising.
He has been a virtual fixture at ODU since his high school graduation, serving as a student manager for the university's baseball and basketball teams, as well as a graduate intern in the sports information office under the late Joe Law, the university's first full-time SID, from 1976-78. He also served as a deputy assistant for the sheriff department in Chesapeake from 1979-81.
Hudson earned his bachelor's degree in political science in 1976 from Old Dominion, as well as his master's in urban studies in 1979.
