2010 NCAA Statistics Survey Results: Executive Summary of the NCAA Division I, III and III Sports Information Directors (from Schools and Conferences) Survey (.pdf)
Rationale: The NCAA Statistics Department decided to undergo a routine evaluation of the process and the services that they provide to the membership, media and the public. The goal of this survey is to gather information about the material that is currently provided and to help determine what would be useful in the future.

• Game-by-game statistics planned for DI men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball this fall
The positive responses received from the membership, media and general public regarding our move to single-game statistical reporting for Division I field hockey, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse last year, has prompted us to move forward with the single-game concept for the fall sports of men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

We also are anxious to increase the frequency of the national rankings for all sports, but that ability is closely tied to the willingness of all our SIDs to consistently upload their game XMLs soon after every home contest, something that did not happen as regularly as we would have hoped in 2009-10. We will continue to monitor this new system and work with all of you to provide the numbers more frequently and completely.

• DII and DIII single-game statistics for hoops?

The popularity of our new single-game reporting for many Division I sports, leads us to believe it may also be time to begin this new system in both Divisions II and III. We already capture the individual game stats and box scores for II/III football and we want your input about adding men’s and women’s basketball to the mix.

Later this summer, we’ll send out a survey to DII and DIII SIDs, asking if you are interested and willing to begin uploading individual game XMLs for each home game during both the men’s and women’s basketball season. Note this will mean the conference offices no longer will be responsible for filing weekly reports, but we will now rely on each individual SID to provide this information after each home game. We recognize this is a serious, season-long commitment, so we will not move forward unless a clear majority of the DII and/or DIII membership is interested.

We also are willing to split the divisions on this issue if one division opts to implement this plan and the other does not, but also note that the expectation is that BOTH men’s AND women’s basketball would use this new system. We’ll send out more information about this proposal later this summer, but welcome your input any time.

• 24/7 access to current, archived RPIs for all sports
Beginning this fall, member institutions and conferences will have unprecedented 24/7 access to all Division I RPIs, past and present, for all sports. This password-protected site will allow the user to view and print all available reports in a PDF format. This new system also will replace the previous process of emailing voluminous PDF RPI documents to each DI league, with instructions to forward those reports to all member schools. Once the current RPIs have been created for a sport, conferences will be notified of that availability and will have immediate access to the documents through this site.

This summer, the statistics staff will begin uploading previous RPI documents for each sport and hopes to have all available RPIs loaded into the new archive system by late fall. Initially, our hope is to have a minimum of the past five years of RPIs for all sports available immediately upon the launch of this new service.

• Digitized historical documents begin roll out soon
Since the 1940s, the NCAA Statistics Staff has collected both single-game (DI football only) and cumulative season statistics from member schools. Access to these 370,000+ documents soon will be available to the membership thanks to an agreement the staff has made to have these one-on-a-kind forms digitized in a PDF format. We expect the project will take about 18 to 24 months, but when completed our entire historical archive will be accessible through our web site.

Over the years, many SIDs have requested copies of these documents, especially for their own institution, and once this project is completed, everyone will have immediate access to this data. We are digitizing one sport (for all divisions) at a time, starting with women’s soccer. As the process for each sport is complete, we’ll make those forms available and move on to the next sport. Look for announcements regarding the availability of these forms throughout the next couple of years.

• Football and men’s and women’s basketball records books move to on-line only format
The 2010-2011 academic year will mark the first time ALL NCAA records books and statisticians’ manuals will be produced in an on-line format only. NO publications will be printed and distributed to the membership. Last year, only the two football records books and the men’s and women’s basketball records books were printed. All publications will be available through both NCAA.org and NCAA.com.

• 2010 field hockey records book on line late summer, help still needed

For the first time this year, the on-line NCAA field hockey records book will include both individual and team records for all divisions. This only was possible through the help of the SIDs in the field hockey community, but more help is needed. We still have some gaps in many of the categories and need additional input and ideas from all of you. Please email your updates to Kevin Buerge of our staff (kbuerge@ncaa.org) and also provide any suggestions for additional categories you’d like to see for future editions.

• All-time won-loss database
Did you know the statistics staff is continually updating its year-by-year, all-time won-lost database to include every team and every sport for which we compile national statistics? And did you know you have access to this information for every school?

The link is located on our main statistics page, but here’s the link in case you just can’t wait: http://web1.ncaa.org/stats/StatsSrv/careersearch. We are most interested in filling in any yearly blanks we may have and also want to be sure the year-by-year data in our system matches your information. We would encourage all of you to visit this link and see what we have for your school. If there are years missing, or incorrect totals, just email us with the corrected information. You also will see that, where available, we’ve listed the head coach for each year that sport has been in existence for your school.

• Two openings on NCAA Statistics and Records Advisory Board - are you interested?
We are looking for replacements to our advisory board. Specifically, we need to replace Carmen Branch from the Big 12 Conference and Steve Flegel from Whitworth. AnnMarie Person also leaves us this year, but her replacement will be named by the CoSIDA Board of Directors. For Carmen’s spot, we need a representative from a FBS conference office, but they cannot be from the Big 12 or SEC (since we already have an institutional representative from that league). For Steve’s opening, we’ll need someone from a DIII institution, but that individual cannot be a member of the Centennial or Northwest Conference. Please email any member of the NCAA staff if you are interested, or contact Carmen and Steve if you’d like more information about these positions.
