A fixture of the Southern California athletic scene for three decades, John Czimbal will be recognized at CoSIDA on July 6


RIVERSIDE, Cal. – John Czimbal will receive the College Sports Information Director’s of America 25-year Award on Tuesday, July 6, in San Francisco, Calif.

Czimbal will receive the award at a luncheon ceremony during CoSIDA’s annual convention at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. The CoSIDA 25-Year Award is presented to sports information directors who have completed 25 years in the profession.

A sports information professional who is concluding his 30th year in the business, Czimbal is a pioneer in helping community colleges utilize computerized statistical software, especially with the implementation of StatCrew© software.

He serves as a StatCrew© statistician and the game-day troubleshooter for community college statisticians and keeps abreast of rules changes which affect statisticians.

Czimbal helped usher in computerized box scores during the 1995 California Community Colleges Men’s Basketball Championships and has been a regular fixture at the men's basketball championship tournament since 1985.

With his help, the California Community College Women’s Volleyball Championships started compiling computerized statistical box scores at the 1999 state tournament.

Czimbal remains active in the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) and is a “statman for hire” in addition to tackling special projects and working in the Riverside City College SID office. He also works at UC Riverside and serves as basketball StatCrew© statistician and official scorer for the UCR Highlanders baseball team.

During the summer, Czimbal serves as an official scorer for the Inland Empire 66ers – a California League Class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Czimbal has served as an SID at several colleges and universities in the Southern California area, including Mt. San Antonio (1980-86), Saddleback (1986-89), NCAA Division II Cal State Los Angeles (1989-92) and NCAA Division III Cal Lutheran (1993-2002). He also has held the role of conference sports information director for both the South Coast and Orange Empire leagues.

Czimbal compiled the information for the inaugural Mission Conference football record book in 1988 and also maintains California Community College state championship results and records for several sports and serves as a historical resource, having been a part of the collegiate athletics scene since 1977.
