Promoting academic success via the third annual Philly-SIDA Charity Bowling Outing

Twenty-nine CoSIDA members from 12 Philadelphia-area schools took to Wynnewood Lanes in Ardmore, Pa. on August 19th to promote academic success in the third annual Philly-SIDA Charity Bowling Outing.

The event helped raise money for awards given to student-athletes honored by the local SIDA organization. Since 2005, Philly-SIDA, in partnership with the Philadelphia Inquirer, has awarded Academic All-Area accolades to student-athletes in 24 sports. The Academic All-Area teams are comprised of student-athletes from the 28 area schools with the schools’ athletic communications staffs handling the nominating and voting process.

“We decided in 2005 to take CoSIDA’s Academic All-America® teams to the local level,” said 2010-11 CoSIDA President Larry Dougherty, who helped found Philly-SIDA. “What we have created is unique in that student-athletes from all divisions are included on the ballot. It has not only helped promote academic success for our student-athletes, but a greater sense of camaraderie among our staffs.”

Besides honoring student-athletes, Philly-SIDA has hosted two ECAC-SIDA Conventions (in 2004 and 2009) and the 2005 CoSIDA Convention held in Philadelphia.
