A long-time athletic department administrator at Nazareth College, Joe Seil will be honored in Marco Island, Florida next month with a 25-Year Award from CoSIDA during the organization's annual convention. He is in his 25th year at Nazareth where he serves as Assistant Athletics Director/Sports Information Director. He has been a fixture in the Nazareth College athletic department since 1986 and has served as an assistant athletic director for communication since 2005.
His 25th year has been a special one for Seil. In June,
Seil will be recognized with the prestigious 2011 Irving T. Marsh Service Bureau Award presented by the Eastern College Athletic Conference-Sports Information Directors of America (ECAC-SIDA). He will receive that award at the group’s annual awards dinner June 9 at the RIT Inn and Conference Center in Rochester, NY. The award is presented annually for contributions and dedications to, and in excellence in, the field of collegiate sports information.
Seil is the recipient of the Irving T. Marsh Award for the College Division. Current CoSIDA President Larry Dougherty of Temple University will receive the 2011 University Division Marsh honor. Since 1967, the Irving T. Marsh Award has been presented to ECAC-SIDA Sports Information professionals who have made exceptional contributions to the profession during their careers.
Nazareth Director of Athletics Pete Bothner summed up Seil's contributions to the campus, its coaches, administrators and student-athletes.
“Joe gives us his best everyday,” said Bothner, quoted in a story about Seil announcing his Marsh Award. “He has the respect of not only our entire staff, but of the athletic personnel of all the colleges that we compete against.”
Seil served on local organizing committees for the 2002 CoSIDA Convention, held in Rochester, and has been invited to serve as a panelist at several national conventions.
His duties at Nazareth also include serving as chairman of the Sports Hall of Fame committee doing play-by-play and color commentary for local radio broadcasts of Nazareth basketball and lacrosse.
Other sports experience includes working in the press tent at several major golf tournaments hosted at Oak Hill Country Club, including the 1990 U.S. Open, the 1995 Ryder Cup, 2003 PGA Championship and the 2008 Senior PGA Championship.
He has been cited on numerous occasions over the years for his publications with CoSIDA "Best In the Nation" awards.
Before joining the Nazareth staff, Seil worked as a sports writer for the Daily Messenger in Canandaigua, N.Y. and at the Post-Standard in Syracuse. He is a graduate of St. John Fisher College with a degree in Communication/Journalism.
Seil resides in the Rochester suburb of Brighton with his wife, Judy. They are the parents of sons Tim and Andy.
