Looking to see if retiring UCLA men's volleyball coach Al Scates is the longest service activie Division I coach - in any sport. Scates is in his 50th year. Active coaches John Gagliardi (St. John's, MN, 62 years as football coach) and Gordie Gillespie (St. Francis, IL, 57 years, baseball coach) are currently at DIII and NAIA schools, respectively, which might leave Scates at the top of the D-I list.
Is there any other Division I coach - in any sport, men's or women's - with a longer current tenure of 50 years?
