Reagan Centennial Coin Toss set for September 23-26 football weekend; all schools invited to participate

The 100th anniversary of the late President Ronald Reagan's birth is getting the football treatment in September, with teams across the country kicking off their games between September 23 and 26 with the annual Ronald Reagan Commemorative Coin Toss. The coin toss festivities are part of a year of celebration honoring the 40th president.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration are promoting the Reagan Centennial Coin Toss, and all NCAA Division I FBS, Division I FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and two-year institutions are invited to help execute the celebration of President Reagan's life and love for football.

According to the Reagan Foundation, the primary goal of the Reagan Centennial National Football Coin Toss is to higlight the leadership attributes which football fosters, through the example of a genuine fan, radio announcer and player - Ronald Reagan. To raise awareness and promote the importance of the initiative, they are requesting that government leaders (governors, legislatures, mayors, other elected officials) and veterans toss the coins at the games in their communities.

The Ronald Reagan Centennial Coin Toss is a national initiative for all high school, college and NFL football programs held September 23-26. Teams are invited to host a special coin toss during this weekend of games, and the Reagan Foundation will provide a Coin Toss package (Centennial Coin, tribute DVD, coin case, intro letter, PA announcement information).

Materials will be sent by September 8 to those who participate.

On August 22, the Reagan Presidential Foundation announced that three football legends - College Football Hall of Famer Lou Holtz; Boston College and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie; and four-time Super Bowl Champion and MVP Lynn Swann -- will serve as Co-Chairs of the Ronald Reagan Centennial National Football Coin Toss.

More than 40 Division I universities have signed up to participate in the weekend events including the University of Alabama, University of Southern California and University of Texas.

Because of President Reagan's well-documented love of sports, the Reagan Foundation has spent this special year working with sports organizations to develop celebrations. The roster has included MLB teams such as the Cubs, Ranges Dodgers, Reds, Angels and Nationals, NASCAR's Richard Childress Racing and IRL's Bryan Herta Autosports, which carried the Centennial logo on the way to winning this year's Indianapolis 500.

This
New York Times article from earlier this year outlines the extensive centennial plans to celebrate former President Reagan.

Please note:

• There are no sponsors as a part of this program, as the Reagan Foundation is a non-profit organization. Should the coin tosses be sponsored, they are willing to work with existing partners, or even find a creative alternative.

• As a part of the program, the Reagan Foundation will be encouraging state and local elected officials to participate as well, on an as-coordinated basis with the team.

• Please note that, if teams are unable to execute the toss on the weekend of Sept. 23 through 26, the Reagan Foundation officials are more than willing to work with those schools to find alternate dates later in the season.
