Updated 2012-13 E-Directory

• CoSIDA's 2012-13 online directory will be available soon in a PDF version. As always, you can view the online version HERE. We would ask that you forward along the updated PDF version of the directory to appropriate media representatives in your locale so that they would have the most recent edition of this publication.

This PDF version of the CoSIDA Directory was compiled based on information provided to CoSIDA by individual institutions/organizations/membership as of late September. If there are inaccuracies in the current edition it is due to those schools/organizations not following up with repeated requests by CoSIDA’s staff to update their directory information prior to the release of this updated document. If you find inaccurate information for your school/organization we ask you to please go to CoSIDA.com and do the following:

- select the Membership link; at the pull-down menu at the top of CoSIDA’s site, select "Update Your Directory Information".
- Everyone can update their personal information here; to update your school/organization information, you MUST be the custodian of your account.
- If you wish to have custodial status, you can request that information on the page noted above. If you require assistance, use this link: http://cosida.com/contact.aspx.

Those who have moved into a new position or who have had staff changes recently are reminded to update their personal and/or organizational CoSIDA E-Directory information. See further information HERE.

Questions? Please contact Will Roleson, CoSIDA Director of Internal Operations, at willroleson@cosida.com.

Strategic Branding Review Continues

As many CoSIDA members are aware, in May CoSIDA’s Board of Directors entered a partnership agreement with Cryder Rinebold of Indianapolis to conduct a branding-based review of CoSIDA during the course of the next 12-to-15 months. A list of major reasons for this important process can be accessed HERE.

• This summer, Dennis Cryder and JoJo Rinebold conducted numerous interview focus meetings with several organizations within CoSIDA and the profession.

• CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik recently worked with Cryder Rinebold to arrange meetings and focus interviews with other groups in intercollegiate athletics (ADs, commissioners, NACDA affiliates, NCAA, NAIA, etc) to discuss CoSIDA and the profession. Fondulas Strategic Research, the quantitative research firm retained by CoSIDA/Cryder Rinebold to help develop the online survey is working on the preliminary survey now. They also will provide a quantitative analysis regarding survey results in the spring. Tentatively, the survey is scheduled to go out to the CoSIDA membership and the external stakeholders in mid-November.

• Recently the following meetings have taken place or are scheduled for purposes of this study:
Sept. 24:        Interviews with D1-A AD Association (Dallas)
Sept. 26-27:   NACDA Executive Committee conference call
Sept. 27:        DII ADA/Commissioners (Indianapolis)
Oct. 3:            NJCAA national staff (conference call)
Oct. 5:            NCAA Communications Department (Indianapolis)
NCAA VP's for Governance Division (Indianapolis)
Oct. 10:          NAIA national staff (Kansas City)
Oct. 11:          NCAA Championships/Statistical staffs (Indianapolis)
Oct. 15:          DIII ADA/Commissioners (Indianapolis)
Oct. 15:          NACMA Board [National Assoc. of Collegiate Marketing Administrators]
                      (conference call)

• On the Oct. 31st Board call, Rinebold and Cryder updated Board members that they have:
- completed all focus group meetings with external groups
- finalized the survey questions/structure with the Fondulas Group

They also reviewed the timeline for getting the survey completed and out to CoSIDA and external groups.

• The aforementioned online survey - for our full membership - will be developed within the next few weeks and we hope that you will take the time to complete it when you receive it in the future so that we can gather needed feedback.

Continuing Education Sessions

• On September 7th CoSIDA launched its Online Reference and Resource Library. You can learn more about this wonderful membership continuing education service and access the database HERE.

• CoSIDA’s 2012-13 year continuing education program kicked off in September and October with an on-demand series of presentations and panels from the 2012 CoSIDA Convention. These on-demand videos are available on CoSIDA's YouTube channel. In coordination with Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, they were produced by NewTek, CoSIDA's official continuing education video production provider as a prominent piece of our fall/winter continuing ed intiatives. You can view the first five on-demand videos HERE.

The CoSIDA Board would like to thank NewTek as well as ASAP Sports (CoSIDA’s official instant transcript services provider) and TRZ Sports /Teamline (CoSIDA’s official conference call provider) for their support of CoSIDA’s continuing education initiatives.

CoSIDA 3rd Vice President Judy Willson (Mountain West Conference) is coordinating our conference call/webinar continuing education program this year. If you have ideas or want to present on a call/webcast, Judy can be contacted via jwillson@themwc.com.

National Organization Based Initiatives

NACDA

From October 10-12, John Humenik, Barb Kowal and Will Roleson met with the NACDA staff at the Orlando Marriott World Center, site of the 2013 CoSIDA Convention (June 12-15) in conjunction with the NACDA and Affiliates Convention. They met with the hotel staff to review aspects of the 2013 Convention.

CoSIDA’s “NACDA Transition Team” continues to update and refine a “Frequently Asked Questions” document to address several questions associated with this convention. Review the current NACDA FAQ document HERE. We strongly encourage all members to review this in preparation for CoSIDA’s Convention moving to the NACDA Convention site in Orlando. The 2013 CoSIDA convention dates are June 12-15.

CoSIDA’s leadership continues to contribute a "CoSIDA Corner" published in each issue of NACDA's Athletic Administration Magazine discussing our organization and profession. The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure throughout the full intercollegiate community.

You can read President Joe Hornstein’s October “CoSIDA Corner Column” which deals with the Cryder Rinebold strategic analysis of CoSIDA. Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal's column, written for the November issue on the new CoSIDA resource/reference library, will be available at CoSIDA.com later in November.

NCAA

Executive Director John Humenik and CoSIDA President Joe Hornstein are working with NCAA Director of Media and Public Relations Erik Christianson to put together plans and meetings for CoSIDA’s leadership contingent that will attend the annual NCAA Convention in Dallas from January 15-18.

• The NCAA Championships and Alliances staff recently published the first of what will be a monthly NCAA Media Coordination and Statistics Newsletter. The newsletter was developed at the request of – and in conjunction with – the NCAA Championships and Media Coordination Advisory Board, which is comprised of CoSIDA members from all three NCAA divisions along with NCAA staff. The newsletter will be e-mailed the first Wednesday of each month and contain timely information regarding NCAA championships and statistics. The October edition, which can be accessed on CoSIDA.com, features information on fall-sport selection shows, digital and printed championship programs, championship logos, as well as schedules and statistics.

• The Championships and Media Coordination Advisory Board held its second conference call of the academic year on Oct. 18 and discussed the following topics: the monthly newsletter, the NCAA Championships FTP site, and the uploading of game statistical files. The board will hold its next call on November 15th.

• NCAA Division II national staff representatives (VP Mike Racy and Associate Director of Research Greg Summers) conducted a conference call with CoSIDA’s DII membership on Oct. 24th. The focus of the conference call dealt with academic progress report (APR) matters for DII. The audio archive and materials on the DII APR and graduation rates can be found HERE. Further information on the NCAA DI, II and III graduation success rates (GSR) and APR is found HERE.

John Humenik and Barb Kowal compiled a monthly “Communications Watch for Today’s AD” newsletter which is forwarded to Dutch Baughman, Executive Director of D1-A Athletics Directors Association. This is the third academic year that this monthly email - with links to communication topics important to senior athletic leaders - has been circulated by Baughmann. Humenik also sends this newsletter to the Presidents/Chairs of CoSIDA’s various divisional leadership groups and encourages them to pass along this newsletter to the president of their respective ADA for distribution to their membership.

Divisional Matters

The NAIA SIDA leadership group conducted a webinar on Oct. 19th with the NAIA national office on the subjects of NAIA branding and the NAIA website. Kay Hawes, NAIA Director of Marketing & Public Relations, was the featured presenter.

NAIA SIDA’s Board of Directors conducted a conference call on Oct. 17th and DII SIDA’s Board conducted a conference call on Oct. 22nd. Mike Racy, NCAA VP for Division II, and Josh Looney, Associate Director of NCAA D II, participated on the DII SIDA Board conference call.

Marketing & Communications Updates

CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, on behalf of the CoSIDA leadership, is coordinating a redesign of the CoSIDA.com website in conjunction with SIDEARM, our website provider. The layout and designs are in their final stages, and the redesigned site will launch later in the semester.

If you have suggestions for CoSIDA.com content or wish to contribute to our website, please send those suggestions to barbkowal@cosida.com.

During the month of October, 13 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were 23 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA organizational umbrella.

In October, 39 articles were posted on CoSIDA.com. The CoSIDA Twitter page had 128 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.

The CoSIDA LinkedIn group continues to attract members and the group now totals 1,562 members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators. Please join and submit your ideas, questions or comments to make this a lively forum for our members.

Capital One Academic All-America® Program

2012-13 Academic All-America® master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements (PDF)

CoSIDA, in conjunction with corporate partner Capital One, has launched a new Capital One Academic All-America® website. The website, developed by a Capital One’ partner ad agency Campfire, is: http://www.capitaloneacademicallamerica.com/. There is tremendous historical and current Academic All-America® content already on the site and it will be fully developed during the 2012-13 academic year.

• Nominations for the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Hall of Fame opened on Monday, Sept. 17 and will close on Nov. 2. (All nominations are done online). Please review previous Academic All-America® selections from you school to see if they qualify for this prestigious honor. See nomination criteria and login information for this award process HERE.

• Voting for the Capital One Academic All-District men's and women's soccer teams concluded on Oct. 30, while voting for the football and women's volleyball teams will end on Tuesday, Nov. 6 (6 pm Eastern deadline). With the first Capital One Academic All-District and All-America® Teams being announced in November, CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee Vice-Chair Jim Seavey (Massachusetts Maritime Academy) has produced key reminders when publicizing student-athletes who earn Capital One Academic All-America® honors.

PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES AND REVIEW THESE POINTERS, found HERE.

NOTE: Deadlines for Capital One Academic All-America® nominations and voting are strictly adhered to. In fairness to all who nominate/vote prior to the deadline and for the integrity of the program, there can be no extensions and no exceptions if the deadline is missed. Please plan appropriately now to make sure your information in place to meet the respective deadlines and that the people at your school who will be nominating student-athletes are paid members of CoSIDA for the 2012-13 year.

If you have questions regarding the nomination criteria for the AAA program, or other questions relating to the awards program, please closely review the information page and FAQ document on the CoSIDA website which we believe will address your question.

• The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®"mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and Academic All-America® Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (johnhumenik@cosida.com) or Academic All-America® Committee chair emeritus Dick Lipe (rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.

Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.
