Strategic Branding Review Continues; Survey Concludes

CoSIDA is eight months into its partnership agreement with the Cryder Rinebold Company of Indianapolis to conduct a branding-based review of the organization. The process is expected to take 12-to-15 months. A list of major reasons for this important process can be accessed HERE.

After 24 interview focus meetings were conducted this summer and early fall, a November survey was sent out to CoSIDA members and to other groups in intercollegiate athletics (AD based, commissioner based, NACDA, NACDA affiliates, NCAA, NAIA, etc.) which asked for thoughts on CoSIDA and the athletic communications profession.

That online survey was developed by Fondulas Research, Cryder Rinebold and the CoSIDA leadership, and the survey results - from more than 800 people - are being analyzed now. Cryder Rinebold and Fondulas Research spent December in the evaluation phase regarding the survey and they will provide an update on the research and recommendations to the CoSIDA leadership group that will attend the NCAA Convention in Dallas in mid-January.

NACDA

John Humenik has been invited to attend the annual NACDA Mid-Year Affiliates Meeting in Marco Island January 26-28. This invitation-based meeting marks the fifth consecutive year that CoSIDA has been invited. Prior to CoSIDA and NACDA developing a partnership agreement in Dec. of 2008, CoSIDA was the only management association/organization in collegiate sports not a part of this annual meeting which brings together - for the only time all year - all of the Executive Directors and Presidents of management groups in intercollegiate athletics to discuss present and future initiatives being undertaken. There is discussion on how these groups can work together for the mutual benefit of all membership groups. Humenik has indicated to the CoSIDA Board and its divisional leadership groups that he finds this annual meeting the most beneficial for CoSIDA during the course of the year.

During the three days of this meeting Humenik, on behalf of CoSIDA, has the opportunity to make a presentation before joint representatives from the following 14 groups: Minority Opportunities Athletics Assoc. (MOAA), Division 1-A Athletic Directors Assoc. (DI-A ADA), Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors, Assoc. (FCS ADA), Division 1-AAA Athletic Directors Assoc. (D1-AAA ADA), Division II Athletic Directors Assoc. (DII ADA), Division III Athletic Directors Assoc. (DIII ADA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NC4S), College Athletic Business Management Assoc. (CABMA), National Assoc. of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), National Assoc. of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), National Association of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA), Collegiate Event and Facility Management Association (CEFMA), Intercollegiate Licensing Assoc. (ICLA), National Assoc. for Athletics Compliance (NAAC). Humenik also meets individually with the President/Executive Director of each organization in attendance.

CoSIDA’s “NACDA Transition Team” continues to update and refine a “Frequently Asked Questions” document to address several questions associated with this convention. Review the current NACDA FAQ document HERE. We strongly encourage all members to review this in preparation for CoSIDA’s Convention moving to the NACDA Convention site in Orlando. The 2013 CoSIDA convention dates are June 12-15.

CoSIDA’s leadership continues to contribute a "CoSIDA Corner" published in each issue of NACDA's Athletic Administration Magazine discussing our organization and profession. The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure throughout the full intercollegiate community.

The December column on the Capital One Academic All-America program and expansion was written by Bernadette Cafarelli (Notre Dame), co-chair of CoSIDA's Academic All-America Committee. It is available HERE.

Marketing & Communications Updates

CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, on behalf of the CoSIDA leadership, is coordinating a redesign of the CoSIDA.com website in conjunction with SIDEARM, our website provider. The layout and designs are finalized, and the redesigned site is scheduled to launch in late January/early February.

If you have suggestions for CoSIDA.com content or wish to contribute to our website, please send those suggestions to barbkowal@cosida.com.

During the month of December, 16 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were 15 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA organizational umbrella.

In December, 27 articles were posted on CoSIDA.com. The CoSIDA Twitter page had 122 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.

The CoSIDA LinkedIn group continues to attract members and the group now totals 1,608 members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators. Please join and submit your ideas, questions or comments to make this a lively forum for our members.

Capital One Academic All-America® Program

2012-13 Academic All-America® master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements (PDF)

CoSIDA's corporate partner Capital One maintains the Capital One Academic All-America® website which was launched in the summer. The website, developed by a Capital One’s partner ad agency Campfire, is: http://www.capitaloneacademicallamerica.com/. There is tremendous historical and current Academic All-America® content already on the site and more is being developed.

• Thanks to the many CoSIDA members who have produced Capital One Academic All-America® videos for student-athletes who have received 2012 fall Capital One AAA honors. Mark Adkins (Manchester College) from the Academic All-America® Committee is coordinating these efforts. You can view these short interviews at the Capital One Academic All-America® YouTube channel.

• On Dec. 7, CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik was informed that King and Schickli - a Lexington, Ky., legal firm which CoSIDA has used since 1986 to gain registered marks for the Academic All-America program - received formal approval from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office with regard to CoSIDA’s request to renew the Academic All-America® Hall of Fame registration mark for an additional 10-year period. This registration mark was granted to CoSIDA originally in 1993. As a result, CoSIDA now officially holds this exclusive registration mark until Aug. 31, 2023. In 2006, CoSIDA also went through this legal process for exclusive use of the “Academic All-America®” registration mark and was granted a renewal extension until 2016. The “Academic All-America®” exclusive registered mark was originally granted to CoSIDA in 1986.

• In December, the Capital One Academic All-America® men's and women's soccer, football and women's volleyball teams were announced. Awards for those student-athletes are currently in production and will be shipped to those CoSIDA members who nominated them in January. Please see the Capital One Academic All-America® webpages for more information and team listings.

CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee Vice-Chair Jim Seavey (Massachusetts Maritime Academy) has produced key reminders when publicizing student-athletes who earn Capital One Academic All-District and All-America® honors. PLEASE REVIEW THESE POINTERS, found HERE.

NOTE: Deadlines for Capital One Academic All-America® nominations and voting are strictly adhered to. In fairness to all who nominate/vote prior to the deadline and for the integrity of the program, there can be no extensions and no exceptions if the deadline is missed. Please plan appropriately now to make sure your information in place to meet the respective deadlines and that the people at your school who will be nominating student-athletes are paid members of CoSIDA for the 2012-13 year.

If you have questions regarding the nomination criteria for the AAA program, or other questions relating to the awards program, please closely review the information page and FAQ document on the CoSIDA website which we believe will address your question.

• The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®"mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and Academic All-America® Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (johnhumenik@cosida.com) or Academic All-America® Committee chair emeritus Dick Lipe (rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.

Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.

Updated 2012-13 E-Directory

CoSIDA Secretary Jeff Hodges (North Alabama) and Director of Internal Operations Will Roelson completed CoSIDA's 2012-13 directory and it is now available in a PDF version. As always, you can log in and use the online directory version as well HERE. We would ask that you forward along the updated PDF version of the directory to appropriate media representatives in your locale so that they would have the most recent edition of this publication.

This PDF version of the CoSIDA Directory was compiled based on information provided to CoSIDA by individual institutions/organizations/membership as of late September. If there are inaccuracies in the current edition it is due to those schools/organizations not following up with repeated requests by CoSIDA’s staff to update their directory information prior to the release of this updated document. If you find inaccurate information for your school/organization we ask you to please go to CoSIDA.com and do the following:

- select the Membership link; at the pull-down menu at the top of CoSIDA’s site, select "Update Your Directory Information".
- Everyone can update their personal information here; to update your school/organization information, you MUST be the custodian of your account.
- If you wish to have custodial status, you can request that information on the page noted above. If you require assistance, use this link: http://cosida.com/contact.aspx.

Those who have moved into a new position or who have had staff changes recently are reminded to update their personal and/or organizational CoSIDA E-Directory information. See further information HERE.

Questions? Please contact Will Roleson, CoSIDA Director of Internal Operations, at willroleson@cosida.com.
