Continuing Education Sessions

Due to how extra busy everyone is during the month of March, we will have no continuing education sessions during that time. We plan to resume continuing education sessions in April.

CoSIDA sponsored two continuing education sessions in February:

Feb 9- “SAAC Leaders, Student-Athletes and You”
Nearly 130 participated in this hour-long session with student-athletes from Division I, II and III institutions who are active in their on-campus SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) and the NCAA national SAAC program.

This session was designed as a Q&A format as both the student-athletes and CoSIDA members talked about publicity/promotions efforts, best practices for student-athletes when it comes to using social media, and how best to promote on-field and community/SAAC efforts and events. Moderatoring the call was CoSIDA 3rd Vice President Eric McDowell (Union College - N.Y.) who coordinates the 2012 continuing ed program. Participants were:

Christopher Everett, Jr. of Western Carolina University (NCAA Div. I), a senior football player; David Pillen of Abilene Christian University (NCAA Div. II), a junior football student-athlete; Brett Halvaks of California Lutheran University (NCAA Div. III); a senior track and field student-athlete; and Dalaine Whitlock a junior soccer student-athlete from Concordia University, Texas (NCAA Div. III).

Feb 23- “Helping Our Colleagues: Gaining Personal Balance”
A total of 118 participated in this popular session which generated many questions from CoSIDA members. The presenters gave advice and tips about achieving work-personal life balance for athletic communicators. They spoke of balancing your personal life with the demands of the sports communications profession - especially as we head into March, one of the busiest months for all CoSIDA members. The presenters were married and single SIDs. The main presenter of this session was FAME, CoSIDA's Female Athletic Media Relations Executives group. Eric McDowell served as moderator and presenting were:

Natalia Ciccone, Pac-12 Conference (Div. I)- Assistant Commissioner, Communications and FAME Co-Chair
Dave Reed, Colorado College (Div. I and Div. III athletics)-  Associate Director, Athletics Media Relations
Amie Canfield, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Div. I and Div. III athletics)- Sports Information Assistant
Chris Holtz, California Pacific Conference (NAIA)- Sports Information Director

National Organization Initiatives

NACDA

Each month, dating back to 2009-10, CoSIDA’s leadership discusses our organization and profession via a “CoSIDA Corner” column that is published in NACDA’s Athletics Administration Magazine. The most recent column, appearing the March 2012 issue was written by Shelly Poe (Ohio State), CoSIDA 2nd Vice President and can be found HERE. Poe writes about CoSIDA’s upcoming 2012 Convention programming – and encourages athletic administrators to support their CoSIDA members' participation in St. Louis.
The February 2012 column was penned by Sam Atkinson (Gallaudet), Chair of the CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee. Atkinson writes about CoSIDA’s annual community volunteer program/outreach efforts during our Conventions and talks about the committee’s new initiatives – encouraging a work-life balance and healthier lifestyles for CoSIDA members.
The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure, something that was not the case prior to CoSIDA’s partnership agreement with NACDA that was agreed to in Dec. of 2008.

A “transition team” is being put into place by CoSIDA’s leadership to start to deal with various management and organizational matters associated with the joint June 2013 CoSIDA/NACDA convention in Orlando. At this time our organizational team includes Joe Hornstein (CoSIDA 1st VP), Shelley Poe (Ohio State- CoSIDA 2nd VP), Eric McDowell (Union College- N.Y., CoSIDA 3rd VP), Nick Joos (Baylor- CoSIDA Past President), Julie Work (NACDA Associate Director), Kevin Keys (Liberty), Anne Abicht (St. Cloud State), Ann King (The Sage Colleges) and CoSIDA staff members Barb Kowal, Will Roleson and John Humenik. Representing NACDA on the team are Senior Associate Executive Director Pat Manak and Assistant Executive Director Julie Work.
That group conducted a conference call on Feb 21 and among the topics discussed was building a schedule concept draft for the 2013 convention (June 12-15 in Orlando); updating a CoSIDA/NACDA Convention “Frequently Asked Questions” document; and other educational ways to updated the membership on this new endeavor, including how best to use time during the St. Louis Convention to discuss the NACDA partnership.

Division-Specific Initiatives

NAIA

NAIA-SIDA President Jay Stancil (Union, KY) conducted a conference call with that group’s Board of Directors on Feb. 9. The next call is scheduled for March 8. Stancil reports that the group discussed the following matters in February:
  1. 1. The NAIA Convention update: Chad Waller and Jay Stancil will work on the panel “How to Market Your University Using Your Athletic Department.” Ron Smith, Cindy Fotti and John Humenik are scheduled to host a session on “How Strategic Communications Can Be Used at the NAIA.” Meetings will be set up at the convention with the presidents/chairs of the NAIA-ADA and NAIA-ACA and John Humenik.
  2. NAIA-SIDA Convention: Fees to be $45 with registration form going online soon for the St. Louis meeting. Lori Joseph of the NAIA will attend, and NAIA CEO and President Jim Carr hopes to attend.
  3. NAIA-SIDA Constitution update: Jay Stancil, Sam Ghrist (Cascade Conference) and Alan Grosbach (NAIA) will meet to iron out the language issues and updating of the constitution.
  4. NAIA-SIDA Leadership has contacted CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal on the possibility of NAIA-SIDA using CoSIDA’s webinar capabilities for continuing education opportunities within NAIA membership.

Division III

• DIII-SIDA President Larry Happel (Central College- Iowa) conducted a conference call with that group’s Board of Directors on February 14.  During the call CoSIDA Director of Internal Operations Will Roleson asked the board for feedback on their use of the CoSIDA E-Directory and for advice on how to make the directory more accurate. They reviewed a request by CoSIDA President Tom Di Camillo (Pac West Conference) for opinions/concerns about the new generation Stat Crew software.Board members reported that they have received little information from Stat Crew and intend to continue using Stat Crew’s Legacy software for now.
Board members also discussed NCAA Division III Week (April 6-15). Jack Copeland, who is coordinating the NCAA’s Division III Identity Initiative, provided some useful information and indicated that there would be a further discussion with the board during a planned Feb. 23 NCAA DIII staff/D3 SIDA Board conference call. Copeland also asked for three volunteers to serve on a panel that would view materials prepared by Division III SIDs to promote the Division III Identity Initiative and to determine which SIDs most deserve recognition for their work. Three board members agreed to serve: Dave Wrath (Augustana College -Ill.), Ira Thor (New Jersey City University) and Jim Seavey (Massachusetts Maritime Academy).

• Division III Vice President Dan Dutcher and other Division III leaders from the NCAA national office held a February 23rd conference call with the D3SIDA board. Jack Copeland, a NCAA DIII consultant, provided an update on the Division III Identity Initiative. The NCAA is providing a promotional kit and a $500 credit to purchase Division III identity items. Also reviewed were new social media initiatives, Division III’s work with the Special Olympics, new co-brandable promotional videos and Division III week April 9-16. Responding to an earlier D3SIDA proposal, Dutcher asked D3SIDA leaders to assist in creating a new Division III/CoSIDA strategic communications working group, partnering with the Division III Commissioners Association and the Division III Management Council. Dan’s request was enthusiastically received by D3SIDA board members.

Division I

University Division Management Advisory Chair Charles Bloom (SEC) sent CoSIDA Vice Presidents Eric McDowell and Shelley Poe some specific topics for DI specific continuing education conference calls and the St. Louis convention programming.

Committee Based Information

The following committees conducted conference calls during the month of February: Academic All- America (with Co-Chairs Bernie Cafarelli of Notre Dame and Mark Beckenbach of Ohio Wesleyan) on Feb. 3 and 22; New Media/Technology (Chair Chris Syme) on Feb. 7; Special Awards (Chair Tam Flarup of Wisconsin) on Feb. 21; and Writing Committee (Chair Wade Steinlage of William Penn) on Feb. 21.

As Chair of the Special Awards Committee, Flarup coordinated the selection process for the 2012 CoSIDA Hall of Fame class and all the 2012 CoSIDA Special Awards. Current CoSIDA Hall of Famers voted from Feb. 2-19 on the nominated Hall of Fame list, and those eligible for induction were presented to the CoSIDA Board of Directors for approval on Feb. 24. The Special Awards Committee - with 100 percent participation - voted on the Special Awards and Hall of Fame slates. The new inductees and award winners will be announced soon and all will be honored at the June CoSIDA St. Louis Convention.

Capital One Academic All-America® Program

Access the Academic All-America master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements, the AAA Committee list of chairs, vice-chairs and district representatives and the district nominating/voting maps for all four divisions.

Check
CoSIDA.com for the four Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-America® Basketball Academic Teams which were  announced Feb. 20-23. Teams are selected in Division I, Division II, Division III and College Division (NAIA, two-year and Canadian student-athletes).

NOTE: Deadlines for nominations and voting and updating First Team Academic All-District honorees' bio information (they advance to the national AAA ballot) will be strictly adhered to. There will be no extensions and no exceptions if the deadlines are missed. Please plan appropriately to make sure your information in place to meet the respective deadlines and that the people at your school who will be nominating student-athletes are paid members of CoSIDA for the 2011-12 year.

If you have questions regarding the nomination criteria for the AAA program, or other questions relating to the awards program, please click
HERE and closely review the information page and FAQ document on the CoSIDA website which we believe will address your question.

The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®"mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and AAA Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (
jhumenik@bellsouth.net) or Academic All-America Committee member Dick Lipe (rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.

Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.

 Current Contests and Scholarship/Grant Nominations

The Publications Contest information and upcoming deadlines can be found HERE; deadlines vary throughout the year. Questions can be sent to Publications Chair Chad Grubbs (Hardin-Simmons) at cgrubbs@hsutx.edu.

There are April/May deadlines for these awards.

Strategic Branding/Marketing & PR-Based Matters

During the month of February, 20 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were 20 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA  organizational umbrella.

Also in February, three CoSIDA-based features/stories were circulated a total of six times on the NCAA Daily News Direct email blast.

In February, 39 articles were posted on
CoSIDA.com. The CoSIDA Twitter page had 331 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.

The CoSIDA LinkedIn group surpassed the 1,000-member mark in February. The group now has 1,068 members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators.

Research/Survey Based News

Clay Stoldt, Chair of the Sports Management Program at Wichita State and a former SID at that school, has worked with Barb Kowal and John Humenik to complete his survey/study with our CoSIDA membership on the growing use of social media in college athletics. That survey concluded in mid-January after being circulated four times to the membership via email and four times via the weekly Communications Watch email. Thanks to the 500-plus CoSIDA members who participated in the survey. Stoldt is gathering and analyzing the information and plans to present his findings at the St. Louis convention and also will provide a summary of his research to CoSIDA’s membership.

Joe Moore, a former SID at Central Missouri who now teaches in that school’s Department of Communications, recently completed his dissertation on “Influence in the Collegiate Sports PR Community.” CoSIDA’s Board of Directors and its various leadership groups agreed to work with Moore on this project at the 2010 San Francisco Convention.
The completed project, which included interviews with CoSIDA’s Board, divisional leadership groups and participation by nearly 300 CoSIDA members, was provided by John Humenik to the CoSIDA Board of Directors and the various divisional leadership presidents/chairs on Dec. 14. Moore is preparing a survey on this topic which he will provide to athletic directors. An executive summary of the report will be produced by Moore/Humenik and provided to the CoSIDA membership in the future. Moore also plans to attend the St. Louis Convention and present his findings to the Board and to the membership.

Miscellaneous

Executive Director John Humenik is working with officials from the NFL Communications Department (Cory Rush and Greg Aiello) to assist the NFL - as a part of its $10,000 sponsorship inventory for the upcoming convention and 2012-13 academic year - with publicizing the NFL’s internships for the 2012 season. Rush will be working with the league’s individual teams and NFL office in New York to compile a single document listing all such internships that the NFL will offer for the 2012 year. That document will then be provided to Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal and it be sent via email to all of our members as well as posted on the website. The NFL staff plans to provide this to CoSIDA at some point in March or April.

Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal and Director of Internal Operations Will Roleson worked with the Membership Services Committee – chaired by Blake Timm (Pacific-Ore.) on the CoSIDA.com Online Reference and Resource Library. Timm and Kowal developed the online structure and sub-categories and links to features, how to’s, videos and PDFs have been built and the Library will now be tested. The launch of the Resource Library is scheduled for mid-March. This concept is also being reviewed with groups outside of CoSIDA, especially the AD groups, so that it can be helpful to these administrators with information on strategic communications planning and crisis management. Kowal and John Humenik have worked with Executive Director of the D1-A AD Association Dutch Baughman after he had indicated there was a strong desire for AD’s to use the CoSIDA resource library for this information.
