The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Goodwill and Wellness Committee is excited to announce details for its annual ‘CoSIDA Cares’ events set to take place in St. Louis during the CoSIDA Convention from June 23-26. The committee will again work with the Young CoSIDA group, as YC will hold its annual raffle to benefit the CoSIDA community service project taking place during the Convention.

This year the committee has a full slate of events taking place to help benefit this year’s charity, the St. Patrick Center, the largest provider of homeless services in Missouri and located blocks from the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis.

Details on all ‘CoSIDA Cares’ events and the annual Goodwill Committee meeting at the convention is below.

CoSIDA 5K Fun Run/Walk

The first-ever CoSIDA 5K fun run/walk debuted with great success last year in Marco Island, Fla., as 96 runners ran and raised over $700 for St. Matthew’s House. For the second year in a row, the CoSIDA Executive Board has supported the Goodwill and Wellness Committee to organize this event along with the St. Louis CoSIDA Convention local organizing committee.

This year’s CoSIDA 5K fun run/walk will take place on Sunday, June 24, at 7:30 a.m.-8:45 a.m. at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial National Park, home of the The Gateway Arch. The park is located a short walking distance from the hotel.

This year’s registration fee is $10 per participant or $20 for a family of three or more. All of the proceeds will go to the St. Patrick Center.

“The CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee is excited to announce this year’s details about our various CoSIDA Cares events to help St. Patrick Center,” said CoSIDA Goodwill Committee Chair Sam Atkinson, Sports Information Director at Gallaudet University. “We had such a great turnout last year for the 5K fun run/walk we hope to build off that momentum in St. Louis. We want to thank Chris Mitchell (Washington-St. Louis SID) for his help in planning this year’s fun run/walk. Our hope was to have the fun run/walk on the first day of the convention but that coincided with the 2012 Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure, thus the change to Sunday. Once again none of these events would be possible without the support from the CoSIDA Board of Directors and leadership.”

To help the committee plan for the 5K fun run/walk, please pre-register via e-mail to Sam Atkinson at sam.atkinson@gallaudet.edu with your name, school and how many participants.

The 5K run/walk is open to all CoSIDA Convention attendees along with their spouses, friends and children. Water will be supplied throughout the course for all to stay hydrated, and an athletic trainer will be on hand for any emergencies.

The CoSIDA Goodwill Committee will run check-in at 7 a.m. at the start/finish line with a scheduled run/walk start time of 7:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for the top male and female finishers, as well as the top family. More information will be e-mailed out to all pre-registered participants before the convention plus information will be available at the CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness donation table during Saturday’s registration.

The CoSIDA 5K Fun Run/Walk began to help improve health and fitness for athletic communications pros and their families while attending the annual convention. The hope is to get individuals active and motivate them to make healthy lifestyle changes to diet and exercise.

Donation Drive and Charity Raffle for St. Patrick Center

The CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee is proud to run its third annual donation drive for a local charity during CoSIDA registration. This year the donations will help benefit the St. Patrick Center, the largest provider of homeless services in Missouri. Donations will be collected at the Goodwill/Wellness Committee table during Saturday, June 23 registration (from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.).

After speaking with representatives at the St. Patrick Center, here is what they are in the most need of: clothing – shirts, shoes, jackets, sweatshirts, and especially toiletries – travel-size shampoo, lotions, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, disposable razors and shaving cream. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

The CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee has collected over 500 items from convention attendees to help benefit homeless families and individuals during the past two conventions in San Francisco and Marco Island.

In addition, Young CoSIDA will once again run an annual charity raffle, which has raised over $1,600 in three years for three different charities. Young CoSIDA is currently collecting items to be raffled off this year. Details about their raffle (when and where) will be announced on its Facebook page this month - www.facebook.com/groups/29150404584.

“It has been amazing to see the overwhelming support we have received the last two years from our colleagues donating to these well-deserving charities,” said CoSIDA Goodwill Committee Vice-Chair Ryan Klinkner, Athletic Media Relations Director at Saint John’s University (Minn.). “We are excited to work with the St. Patrick Center. Having  them so close to this year’s convention will make things easier for our convention attendees to see first-hand the great deeds being done to help the homeless of Missouri.”

The St. Patrick Center’s mission is to provide opportunities for self-sufficiency and dignity to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Individuals and families build permanent, positive change in their lives through safe and affordable housing, sound mental and physical health, and employment and financial stability. For more information about the St. Patrick Center please log onto its website www.stpatrickcenter.org or call 314.802.0700.

2012 Service Project

A service project will be conducted for the third time in the past four years. Interested CoSIDA Convention attendees, who can sign up at registration, will go to the St. Patrick Center on Tuesday, June 26, to help out for several hours.

The CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee will take two groups of 15 volunteers over to the St. Patrick Center, a short walking distance from the hotel, to help them with various tasks. The first session of volunteer work will run from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., with a second group starting at noon until 2 p.m. If you are interested in securing a spot for the service project please contact Sam Atkinson (sam.atkinson@gallaudet.edu) and Ryan Klinkner (rklinkner@csbsju.edu) with your name, school and which volunteer session you are interested in attending.
