TOWSON, Md. – Catcher Chad Carman, a graduate student at Oklahoma City University, leads the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Carman, a business administration major with a 3.97 G.P.A., is the winner of t
he Academic All-America® of the Year award in the College Division.
The Midwest City, Okla., native is three-time All-Sooner Athletic Conference first team selection and was named to the 2010 NAIA Gold Glove Team. A .391 hitter, Carman has started all 58 games for the Stars, leading No. 3 Oklahoma City to a 48-10 record and a berth in the AVISTRA NAIA College World Series for the fifth year in a row.
A starter in all 58 games for the third-ranked Stars, he has smashed 11 home runs with 50 runs batted in. He has scored 36 runs and has hit 18 doubles. An outstanding defensive catcher, he has a .991 fielding percentage and had thrown out 49 of 122 runners trying to steal in his career.
A four-year starter at catcher, he ranks among the Stars’ career leaders with 30 home runs, 73 runs scored and 165 runs batted in.
The 11 members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division first team have a 3.87 G.P.A.
Joining Carman on the first team are pitchers Derek Cape of Lindsey Wilson and T.J. Swank of Judson (Ill.). A senior physical education and health major with a 3.81 G.P.A, Cape averaged 10.08 strikeouts per nine innings as he posted an 8-2 record with a 3.36 ERA. He helped Lindsey Wilson to a 43-16 record and a berth in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
Swank, a junior exercise and sports science major with a 3.67 G.P.A., led Judson to the opening round as well by compiling a 7-2 record with a 3.74 ERA. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native pitched two complete game shutouts in helping Judson to a 47-14 record and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship.
Senior Matt Negaard of Northwestern (Iowa) leads the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division first team infield. Juniors Jacob Harrison of William Woods, Beau Kelly of Nebraska Wesleyan and Alan Spanel of Doane also made the team.
Negaard, a senior second baseman from Sioux City, Iowa, is a biology major with an emphasis in health professions and owns a 3.77 G.P.A. He was Northwestern’s leading hitter with a .346 batting average with 18 RBI’s and four doubles. Negaard also scored 33 runs and stole 12 bases to help Northwestern post a 30-23 record.
Harrison, a junior exercise science major with a 3.79 G.P.A., was the Owls’ second-leading hitter with a .362 batting average. The Owls’ starting shortstop led the team with 42 runs scored while driving in 23 runs. He also stole 15 bases while helping William Woods post a 36-19 record.
The starting first baseman for Nebraska Wesleyan, Kelly is a business administration and history double major with a 3.92 G.P.A. A native of Colorado Springs, Col. helped Nebraska Wesleyan to a 20-22 record as he batted .385 with three home runs and 28 RBI’s. Kelly recorded a .983 fielding percentage with five errors in 290 total chances.
Spanel, a second baseman owns a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. with a major in biochemistry. A native of Norfolk, Neb., he batted a .311 with four doubles and 29 RBI’s while helping Doane post a 36-21 record. He helped Doane win the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular-season championship and the NAIA Opening Round.
Seniors Coby Cress of Westmont and Brandon Young (Vanguard) join junior Travis Hanson (Morningside) as outfielders on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Baseball first team.
A senior economics and business major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Cress was a third team Capital One Academic All-America® College Division third team selection. As the Warriors’ starting rightfielder, he batted .368 with seven home runs, 13 doubles and 39 RBI’s in 2012. The Warriors’ second-leading hitter, he helped Westmont finish the season with a 24-27-1 record. Cress recorded nine assists defensively while posting a .979 fielding percentage.
A senior centerfielder for Vanguard, Young is an accounting major with a 3.81 G.P.A. A native of Saugus, Cal., Young hit .381 with nine doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI’s. He also scored 37 runs and stole nine bases as Vanguard finished 23-21 overall.
A junior with a double major in engineering physics and mathematics, Hanson has a 3.96 G.P.A. A first team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference selection, Hanson leads the NAIA with 45 stolen bases. She batted .368, second on the team. He also led the Mustangs with 74 base hits and 61 runs scored. An outstanding defensive player, he made only one error and had a .992 fielding percentage. Morningside finished the year with a 37-21 record.
Junior Jake Storrer of Arizona Christian earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Baseball first team as designated hitter. A pre-medicine major, Storrer has a 3.88 G.P.A. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Storrer helped Arizona Christian to its first-ever appearance in the NAIA Tournament by batting .307 with seven doubles, four triples, five home runs and 22 RBI’s. He also scored 37 runs and stole 11 bases.
Leading the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division second team are pitchers Derek Peluso of Point Park and Daniel Pulliam (Lindsey Wilson). Rhett Goodmiller (Taylor) is the team’s catcher. Mike Dickman of Concordia (Ore.), Danny Grimm of Union (Tenn.), Josh Ostrom of Nebraska Wesleyan and Josh Roberts (Mount Vernon Nazarene) comprise the infield.
Brandon Bongard (Davenport), Ian Nielsen (Taylor) and Steve Pelletier (Madonna) are the second team outfielders while Brandon Hedrick of Union (Ky.) is the designated hitter.
Pitchers Eddie Pantzlaff of Northwestern (Iowa) and Matt Thomas of William Woods top the third team while Anthony Dunn (Doane) is the catcher. Hunter Cross of Auburn-Montgomery, Jesse Dodd (College of Idaho), Brian Fisher (Oklahoma City) and Jamon Hammel of Huntington are the infielders. Michael Albert (Doane), Matt Kimmel (Azusa Pacific) and Benji Sutherland (Biola) are the third team outfielders while Chris Dameron of Park is the designated hitter.
