TOWSON, Md. – Senior outfielder Drew Golz of Wheaton (Ill.) College leads the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A chemistry major with a 3.98 G.P.A., Golz was named as the Division III Academic All-America® of the Year for Division III baseball as he accomplished a rare feat. During the fall, he was selected as the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for Division III Men’s Soccer. He is the first student-athlete from Wheaton to earn Capital One Academic All-America® honors four times. Golz is a two-time Academic All-America® in baseball and soccer.
A native of River Forest, Ill., Golz is the first male scholar-at
hlete to earn the Academic All-America® of the Year award in two sports in the same year.
The Capital One Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
Golz is one of only two repeat selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball Team. Last year, he earned second team honors on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division team.
Named as a first team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings in May, Golz excelled as an outfielder and a pitcher for Wheaton College, leading the Thunder to a 22-18 record. He led the team with a .404 batting average and tied for the team lead with 45 runs scored. A two-time All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) selection, Golz had 12 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 27 RBI’s. Golz finished his career with a .356 batting average, fifth on Wheaton’s all-time list.
As a pitcher, Golz tied the school record for victories in a single season by posting an 8-2 record. He pitched eight complete games in 10 appearances and tossed three shutouts in 85-2/3 innings of work. His 2.52 ERA was third on the team and he had 46 strikeouts and only 24 walks.
The 11 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.83.
Senior first baseman Steve Karnyski of St. John Fisher College is the other repeat selection on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball first team. A second team selection last year, he led the Cardinals to a 31-12 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
A biology major with a 3.92 G.P.A., Karnyski was named as a first team All-American by d3baseball.com. A native of Depew, N.Y., Karnyski was honored as the Empire 8 Player of the Year and the 2012 New York Region Player of the Year. He led the Cardinals in hitting (.427), on-base percentage (.495) and slugging percentage (.669), base hits (76), runs scored (56) and total bases (119). As the Cardinals’ first baseman, he had a .994 fielding percentage. Karnyski finished his career with a .383 batting average, 16 home runs and 126 runs batted in.
Joining Karnyski in the infield of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III first team are seniors Brock Gates of Pacific Lutheran University, Paul Jaglowski of Ferrum College and Matt Thompson of McMurry University.
A communications major with a 3.55 GPA, Gates was the 2012 Northwest Conference Player of the Year. He led Pacific Lutheran in hitting (.407), home runs (7) and runs batted in (47). A native of Federal Way, Wash., Gates is a three-year starter at first base who earned first team all-conference honors twice. As a senior, he led the Lutes to a 24-16 record while earning third team All-American honors from d3baseball.com.
An international studies major with a double-minor in Spanish and economics, Jaglowski graduated from Ferrum College with a 3.93 G.P.A. The recipient of 2012 Ferrum President's Cup, an award presented annually to the College's top graduating student-athlete, Jaglowski was a four-year starter at shortstop who earned All-USA South Conference four times. A two-year team captain, he was honored as the USA South Conference Player of the Year as a senior. The recipient of the Douglas W. Foard Award, presented to the College's top graduating student in international studies, the Chesapeake, Va. native was the Panthers’ second-leading hitter with a .381 batting average. Jaglowski also led Ferrum with 53 hits, 22 runs batted in and 13 stolen bases.
A business management and finance major with a 3.60 G.P.A., Thompson led McMurray to the championship game of the American Southwest Conference Tournament. A first team All-ASC first baseman, he was named third team All-American by the ABCA. A native of Southlake, Texas,
Thompson led the War Hawks with a .404 batting average. He also had a team-leading 63 base hits and scored 43 runs. Thompson belted a team high nine home runs with 36 runs batted in and had a .518 on-base percentage. Named as the ASC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, he was also the ASC West Division's "Player of the Week" four times during the 2012 season.
Seniors Ryan Adams of Aurora College and Jacob Ludvik of the University of LaVerne join Golz as members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III outfield.
A business commerce major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Adams is a two-year starter in the Aurora outfield. A two-time selection as first team All-Northern Athletics Conference, he helped the Spartans win the NAC championship and earn their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. A second team all-region selection, Adams batted .382, second on the team. He also scored a team high 66 runs while hitting 15 doubles with three triples, three home runs and 51 runs batted in. A native of Geneva, Ill., Adams stole 25 bases in 27 attempts while leading Aurora to a 38-10 record.
The starting centerfielder for La Verne, Ludvik is a movement and sport science major with a 3.94 G.P.A. A first team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection the last two years, Ludvik led the Leopards to a 26-16 record and the SCIAC championship. A native of Diamond Bar, Calif., Ludvik led the Leopards with a .405 batting average, 71 hits and 44 runs scored. Ludvik also added 18 doubles, three home runs and 39 runs batted in.
A two-time All-Landmark Conference first team selection, senior Austin Rock of Moravian College is the designated hitter of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III first team. Rock, who has a double major in financial economics and philosophy with a 3.98 G.P.A., led the Greyhounds to a 28-16 record and a runner-up finish in the Landmark Conference Tournament. Rock was Moravian’s third-leading hitter with a .364 batting average, 37 runs scored, 15 doubles and 38 runs batted in. A native of Arlington, Va., he was named to the All-Region team.
A biology major with a 3.78 G.P.A., Grinnell College senior catcher Mike Nodzenski re-wrote the school record books during his college career. Named as the 2012 Midwest Conference South Division Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive season, he finished his career with a .395 batting average, the top mark in school history. He also set school records for home runs (38), doubles (50) and RBI’s (169) in career. A preseason All-American selection, the Naperville, Illinois native batted .366 with seven homers and 33 RBI’s as a senior for the Pioneers.
Junior pitchers Ethan Post (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) and Brian Rauh (Chapman University) are the only underclassmen on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball first team.
Post, who has a double major in chemical engineering and chemistry, has a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. A native of Rockford, Mich., he helped the Engineers post a 27-14 record and finish first in the Heartland Athletic Conference regular season standings. Post pitched in 10 games and compiled a 3-1 record. In 41 innings, he posted a 4.61 E.R.A. while striking out 17 batters.
A three-time first team All-American pitcher at Chapman, Rauh is a business major with a 3.53 G.P.A. In his career, Rauh has compiled a remarkable 30-1 record with a 1.78 E.R.A. In his first two seasons pitching for the Panthers, he compiled a perfect 22-0 record. The Panthers’ career leader with 355 strikeouts, he was even more dominant in 2012. A native of Lake Forest, Cal., he compiled an 8-1 record with a 1.27 E.R.A. for a team that has a 20-20 record. Opposing hitters batted just .159 against him. In 92 innings, he had 122 strikeouts. As a sophomore, he posted an 11-0 record and a 1.74 E.R.A. for a team that had a 37-13 record and reached the NCAA Division III championship game.
Nine seniors lead the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball second team, led by Stevenson University honorees infielder Justin Anderson and designated hitter Tony Prescott. Three pitchers were named to the second team to a tie in the voting. Seniors Jesse Blum of Marian (Wis.), Brendan Close of Moravian and Michael Dirkx of Buena Vista are the second team pitchers while senior Garrett Salzman (Macalester) is the catcher. Seniors Scott DeAngelis (Coe) and Ryan Javech (North Park) join junior Evan Brockmeier (Marietta) and Anderson as the infielders on the second team.
Senior Brandon Rogalski of Washington (Mo.) earned a spot in the outfield, along with juniors Tyler Heck of Union (N.Y.), Brendan Toughey (Baldwin-Wallace) and Jake Zadra (Edgewood).
Graduate student Matt Glassman (Stevens Tech), an infielder, leads the Academic All-America® Baseball third team. Six seniors, including pitcher Jason James of Oberlin, infielder C.J. Mooney (Rutgers-Camden), infielder Brandon Winkler (Rowan), outfielder Jeff Slanovec (Misericordia) and designated hitter Michael Prusator (Ozarks) were also honored as members of the third team.
Junior pitcher Tyler Dierke of Kenyon, junior catcher Todd Tompkins (Becker) and junior outfielder Nick Gentili (Pomona) complete the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III baseball teams.
