The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the winners of their 2012-13 undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships.

The organization will distribute a total of $25,000 to scholarship winners during the 2012-13 academic year after choosing a pair of $5,000 postgraduate scholarship recipients, two more $2,500 undergraduate scholarship winners, and one school to receive a $10,000 graduate internship grant.

The scholarships will be formally announced during CoSIDA’s upcoming annual workshop in St. Louis, June 23-26.

The Fred Nuesch-Dave Wohlhueter Undergraduate Scholarships and Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant have been awarded since 1999, when CoSIDA expanded its scholarship program in order to foster interest in the sports information field.  Since presenting the first Wylie Smith Graduate Scholarship in 1981, CoSIDA has provided more than $400,000 in grants to students working in sports information offices at member institutions and conferences.

To be eligible for either the Postgraduate or Undergraduate Scholarships, candidates must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and express an interest in pursuing a career in sports information.

Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship ($5,000)

Carli Todd, a DePaul University graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in new media studies from that institution, earned the Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship ($5,000). Todd, who earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management from the University of Tampa in May of 2011, spent 2011-12 as a graduate assistant for DePaul Director of Athletics Communications Greg Greenwell.

Todd served as the primary communications contact for the Blue Demon volleyball, track and field and cross country teams. Before joining the DePaul staff, Todd spent four years as a student assistant in the University of Tampa Sports Information Office, where she served as the primary contact for the Tampa baseball and men’s soccer programs under Director Tom Kolbe. In addition to her collegiate experience, Todd also worked as an assistant/intern in the communications and public relations department for the Tampa Bay Rays, working for vice-president of communications Rick Vaughn.

The Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship is named in honor of the former CoSIDA Scholarships Committee chairman and long-time Sports Information Director at Northern Arizona University.

Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship ($5,000)

Joelle Milholm, who is working as a graduate assistant in the CSU Bakersfield Athletic Communications Office for Sports Information Director Matt Turk and Director of New Media Corey Costelloe, claimed the Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship ($5,000). Milholm, who earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Colorado State in 2005, is pursuing a master’s degree in English from CSUB. In addition to her graduate studies, Milholm serves as the primary contact for nine CSUB sports, including volleyball, softball, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s golf, women’s cross country and women’s tennis.

Following her graduation from Colorado State in 2005, Milholm spent three years as a sports reporter and editor at the Glenwood Springs (Colo.) Post Independent, before working three years at the Lodi (Calif.) News-Sentinel as a sports reporter from August of 2008 to July of 2011.

The Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship is named in honor of former Mississippi Sports Information Director and CoSIDA Hall of Famer Langston Rogers, who served as the SID at Ole Miss from 1981 until his retirement in 2010. The scholarship is presented annually to a rising minority or female student.

Fred Nuesch-Dave Wohlhueter Undergraduate Scholarships ($2,500 each)

CoSIDA’s Fred Nuesch-Dave Wohlhueter Undergraduate Scholarship awards ($2,500 each) were presented to Jake Faber of Pittsburg State and Ashley Goettl of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Faber, a native of Overland Park, Kan., has posted a 3.3 GPA as a broadcast communications major with a minor in leadership studies at Pittsburg State. In 2012, Faber won the Kansas Association of Broadcasters top award for the Best Collegiate Sportscast, while adding a trio of second-place finishes. He has worked for Associate Athletic Director Dan Wilkes as a student videographer for the Gorillas for two seasons. He was the sports editor for the Collegio campus newspaper and on-air talent for CAPS-13 student television for two years. He is on track to graduate in May of 2013.

Goettl carries better than a 3.8 GPA as a triple major in communication studies, digital film and television journalism, and political science at Wisconsin-River Falls. The senior-to-be from North Mankato, Minn., has assisted Sports Information Director Jim Thies for the past two seasons at UW-River Falls, while also competing in softball for the Falcons the past three years. In fact, Goettl earned NCAA Division III Capital One First-Team Academic All-America® honors from CoSIDA as a junior infielder in 2012.

Goettl also earned spots on NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams in 2011 and 2012. She is a three-time NFCA All-Great Lakes Region selection. Goettl was the editor-in-chief of The Student Voice campus newspaper in 2011-12, and has spent three years as a broadcaster and host on the campus radio station, WRFW. She also has spent two summers as a newsroom intern at KEYC-TV in Mankato, Minn., and one year as an intern at Wisconsin Public Radio in Eau Claire. Goettl is on track to graduate in May of 2013.

Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant ($10,000)

In addition to the four scholarships, CoSIDA awarded the 2012-13 Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant ($10,000) to DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. Director of Sports Information Bill Wagner covers 23 varsity sports for the Tigers without the assistance of any other full-time employees at DePauw.

The Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant provides funds for a sports information office to hire a graduate intern on a one-year basis, hoping the success of the program can help the schools demonstrate the need for additional assistance in the future. Wagner, who served on the CoSIDA Board of Directors from 2005 to 2008, will also be honored for 25 years of service to the profession at this year’s annual convention. He was the founding president of D3SIDA, the NCAA Division III management group, in 2008.
