TOWSON, Md. – Seniors Tim Nelson of the University of Wisconsin-Stout and Elizabeth Phillips of Washington University (Mo.) lead the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). 
Nelson and Phillips have been chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year Division III award winners for men’s and women’s track & field/cross country, respectively.
The Capital One Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 D-III Academic All-America® teams program.
A business administration major with a 3.64 G.P.A., Nelson capped his illustrious track and field career by sweeping national championships in the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000-meter run at the 2012 NCAA Division III outdoor championship. Nelson helped the Blue Devils finish third at the NCAA Division III championship meet. He also won a national title in the 5,000-meter run at the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor championship. A native of Augusta, Wis., Nelson was selected as the USTFCCCA outdoor track Athlete of the Year in 2012 and posted the third-best time in Division III history in the 5,000-meter run at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
At the 2011 NCAA Division III cross country championship meet, Nelson turned in the b
est finish ever by a Wisconsin-Stout runner when he placed fourth. He also finished third at the NCAA Midwest Regional and won the WIAC individual title. He has one year of eligibility remaining in cross country.
A biomedical engineering major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Phillips ended her career as the most decorated track & field student-athlete in the history of Washington (Mo.). A native of Homer Glenn, Ill., Phillips is the first-ever three-time NCAA Elite 88/89 Award winner in track/cross country with one selection for cross country in 2011 and two for track in 2010 and 2011. The Elite 88/89 Award honors the top student-athlete (in terms of highest GPA) who competes at the NCAA national championship or finals in their division (either I, II or III).
Phillips was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division first team last season as well. This past fall, Phillips led the Bears to their first NCAA cross country championship in program history with a 40th-place individual finish.
A seven-time All-American in track, Phillips finished third in the nation in the mile run and was national runner-up as part of the distance medley relay at the 2012 NCAA Division III indoor track & field championship. At the NCAA outdoor championship, Phillips finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run. Phillips earned a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Honorees
The 15 members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team carry an average G.P.A. of 3.76.
Senior Kale Booher of Ohio Wesleyan is the only repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team. He earned first team notice on the College Division team last year and was a second team selection as a sophomore.
Senior Michael Baer of Muhlenberg earned a spot on the first team after making the second team last year. Seniors Jeffrey Corelli of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Timothy Layng of Moravian are third team honorees who moved up to the first team.
Seniors Daniel Drewek (Wisconsin-Stout), Tyler Genovese of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Tyler Jackson of Washington (Mo.), Dan Kerr of Calvin, Kevin McCarthy of Wabash, Ben Scheetz of Amherst and Greg Whittle of Calvin were named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team for the first time.
Juniors Eyo Epko of St. Thomas (Minn.), Kyle Hannon of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Taylor Purdue (Rowan) complete the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team.
A history major with 3.98 G.P.A., Booher earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA All-Region honors in cross country. He finished 17th in NCAC meet and was 19th at the NCAA regionals. A native of Covington, Ohio, Booher was a member of the Bishops' All-Ohio champion distance medley relay team that also earned All-NCAC honors during the indoor season. During the outdoor season, Booher won All-NCAC and All-Ohio honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and broke the school record in the event.
A biochemistry major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Baer finished fifth in the decathlon at the 2012 Centennial Conference Championship Meet. A native of Elizabethtown, Pa., Baer placed in the top-five in the event at the CC Championship for three consecutive years. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate, Baer was one of the valedictorians of the Muhlenberg Class of 2012.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.92 G.P.A., Corelli competed in the 2011 NCAA Division III cross country championship meet. A native of Latham, N.Y., Corelli also ran 12th at the New York State championship, and sixth in the Liberty League championship. He earned second team All-New York honors and first team All-Liberty League accolades.
A biology major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Layng was named as the NCAA Elite 89 award winner among the 508 male student-athletes at the 2012 NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championship meet. A native of Canton, Pa., Layng placed fourth in the pole vault at the event, earning his second All-America honor of the year. Layng placed seventh during the 2012 NCAA Indoor championship.
A psychology major with a 3.72 G.P.A., Drewek was a seven-time All-American at Wisconsin-Stout. A native of Athens, Wis., Drewek is the first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference athlete to capture four NCAA outdoor pole vault championship. Drewek broke Wisconsin-Stout's outdoor pole vault record and won three WIAC indoor vault titles along with the WIAC heptathlon title in school-record fashion. He was named as the 2011 WIAC Indoor Track Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete.
Calvin joined Wisconsin-Stout as the only other school to have two representatives on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team as Kerr and Whittle were honored. An exercise science major with a 3.75 G.P.A., Kerr earned All-America honors during the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run. A native of Petoskey, Mich., Kerr was also a 2011 All-American in cross country, placing 21st in the nation. He was also named as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Most Valuable Player with a spot on the All-MIAA cross country team for the third-straight year. He also won the 10k during the MIAA outdoor championship twice.
A civil and environmental engineering major with 3.72 G.P.A., Whittle is a three-time All-American in track. He finished second in the mile run at the 2011 NCAA indoor championship and fourth in the 1,500-meter run at the 2011 NCAA outdoor championship. Whittle also placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship and won the MIAA championship in the event.
An actuarial science major with a 3.84 G.P.A., Genovese won the 2011 NCAA Division III indoor championship in the weight throw, leading Wisconsin-Eau Claire to a second-place team finish. A native of Stevens Point, Wis., Genovese also placed second at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship in the discus and fifth in the hammer throw. Genovese holds all of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s records in the indoor weight throw and the outdoor hammer and discus events.
A biology major with a 3.45 G.P.A, Jackson became Washington's (Mo.) first NCAA Division III indoor champion this season by winning the 60-meter hurdles with a school record time of 7.93 seconds. It was the second fastest time in Division III history. A native of Silver Spring, Md., Jackson was also the University Athletic Association champion in the 50-meter hurdles and is a three-time All-American.
A biology major with a 3.52 G.P.A., McCarthy finished sixth at the 2011 NCAA Division III cross country championship for Wabash. He also won a national title in the one-mile run at the 2012 NCAA Indoor championship, and placed third in the 1,500-meter run at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship. A native of Zionsville, Ill., McCarthy led Wabash to the NCAC indoor championship as a senior. The Middle Distance/Distance Most Valuable Performer, he won the mile and contributed to a record-breaking distance medley relay at NCAC Meet. McCarthy is also an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.
Honored as the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2012 NCAA Division III indoor championship, Scheetz is a physics major with a 3.47 G.P.A. A native of Lancaster, Pa., Scheetz was a two-time USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Year, winning a national title in the 800-meter run and placing fourth in the 400-meter dash during indoor competition. He also anchored Amherst's sixth-place 1,600-meter relay team. At the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship, Scheetz placed seventh in the 800-meter run. Scheetz graduated with 10 Amherst records in indoor and outdoor track and field.
A business entrepreneurship major with a 3.69 G.P.A., Epko was the Most Outstanding Performance of the Meet award winner at the 2012 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship. He set a stadium record in the high jump. A native of Andover, Minn., Epko received the same honor at the MIAC indoor championship after winning the championship in the triple jump. He was also named as the MIAC Outstanding Field Athlete during the 2010 outdoor season and the Outstanding Field Athlete during three straight MIAC indoor championships.
An electrical engineering and computer science double-major with a 3.92 G.P.A., Hannon was a 2010 All-American as a member of the indoor distance medley relay team for MIT. A native of Park Ridge, Ill., Hannon was also the New England Division III champion in the one-mile run and he was also part of MIT’s championship 4x800-meter relay team.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.82 G.P.A., Purdue is a member of Rowan’s two-time national champion 4x400-meter relay team. The Profs won back-to-back titles at the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Division III outdoor championships. A native of Highland Lakes, N.J., Purdue also earned All-America honors on the third-place 4x400-meter relay at the 2012 NCAA indoor championship and received New Jersey Athletic Conference Indoor all-conference first and second team honors on the 4x400-meter relay and 4x200-meter relays, respectively. At this year’s NJAC championship, Purdue earned All-NJAC first team status with a first-place 4x400-meter relay.
Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Honorees
Phillips, a Capital One Academic All-America® College Division first team selection last season, is one of two repeat selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team. Senior Simone Childs-Walker of Carleton is also a member of the first team for the second year in a row.
The 15 members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team has an average G.P.A. of 3.87.
Junior Elizabeth Evans of Rose-Hulman and senior Emily Schudrowitz of St. Norbert were second team honorees last year who made the first team this year. Senior Emma Dewart (Ithaca), senior Jaela Dinsmore (Willamette), senior Keelie Finnel of Coe and junior Mary Mahoney of Mount Union earned third team notice last year and graduated to the first team this year.
A philosophy major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Childs-Walker was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® first team last season. A native of Seattle, Wash., Childs-Walker is a 12-time NCAA All-American after finishing eighth in the nation in the 10,000-meter run at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship. A 16-time Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, Childs-Walker won three league championships this season with first place finishes in cross country, the indoor 3,000-meter run and the indoor 5,000-meter run.
An electrical engineering and mathematics double major with a 3.50 G.P.A., Evans recently became just the second student-athlete in NCAA Division III history to earn four consecutive national championships in the high jump. A second team Academic All-America® selection last year. Evans won the high jump four times during the past two indoor and outdoor seasons. She finished runner-up twice in 2010. A native of Bicknell, Ind., Evans has been named as the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year three times. She has also been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Year four times.
An international business and Spanish double-major with a 3.94 G.P.A., Schudrowitz won NCAA Division III titles in the 800-meter run at the indoor and outdoor meets. A Capital One Academic All-America® second team selection last year, she is a native of Wauwatosa, Wis. An 18-time Midwest Conference champion, Schudrowitz owns nine St. Norbert and four Midwest Conference records.
A health & physical education major with a 3.63 G.P.A. who earned Capital One Academic All-America® third team last year, Dewart is Ithaca’s most decorated women’s track and field student-athlete. A native of Barker, N.Y., she is an 11-time All-American who won back-to-back NCAA indoor pentathlon championships. She also tied for seventh in the high jump. The USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, she was also the NCAA runner-up in the heptathlon at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Dinsmore, who has a double major in Spanish and Latin American studies with a 3.99 G.P.A., earned the 2012 NCAA Elite 89 Award for Division III women’s outdoor track and field. She also finished fifth in the 100-meter dash at the outdoor meet. A native of Hines, Ore., Dinsmore won the Northwest Conference championship in 100-meter and 200-meter dash for Willamette.
The NCAA Division III 800-meter champion at the indoor and outdoor meets in 2011, Finnel is a mathematics major with a 3.55 G.P.A. An eight-time All-American for Coe, she was a third team Capital One Academic All-America® selection as a junior. A native of Francis Creek, Wis., Finnel was an eight-time All-American. Finnel was the runner-up in each event in 2012. A Drake Relays 800-meter champion, she anchored a pair of All-American 4x400-meter relay teams the last two years.
An environmental science major with a 3.96 G.P.A., Mahoney was named to the Academic All-America® third team as a sophomore. A native of Ashtabula, Ohio, Mahoney won an NCAA Championship in the 200-meter dash and placed third in the 400-meter run at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship, leading Mount Union to a third place finish. The USTFCCCA Great Lakes Indoor and Outdoor Sprinter of the Year, Mahoney had five All-American performances this season, including a runner-up showing in the 400-meter dash at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championship.
Senior Erin Hollinger of Case Western Reserve earned Capital One Academic All-America® third team honors in 2010. A macromolecular science & engineering major with a 3.94 G.P.A., she finished her career as a five-time Academic All-American® selection. She earned three additional selections in basketball. A native of Chardon, Ohio, Hollinger was a four-time All-American in the high jump, placing fourth at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship and third at the NCAA indoor championship. Also a national qualifier in the heptathlon, Hollinger won six Unity Athletic Association titles in the high jump during her career and was a two-time finalist for the Jostens Trophy, given to the Division III Basketball Player of the Year.
Seniors Lauren Alpert of Illinois Wesleyan, Emily Canales (Redlands), Sarah Hoffman (Wartburg) and Erica Jackey of Washington (Mo.) complete the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III women’s track and field/cross country team, along with juniors Lauren Kuntz of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Annie Lydens of Pomona-Pitzer.
A psychology major with a 3.69 G.P.A., Alpert was a five-time All-American this season with an individual third-place finish in the long jump and an eighth-place showing in the 400-meter dash at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship. A native of Park Ridge, Ill., she also ran a leg on the 4x400-meter relay team that earned All-American status both indoors and outdoors. She also earned All-American status in the 400-meter dash indoors. In College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship action, Alpert won the long jump in league record fashion, took first in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes, placed third in the triple jump, and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team.
A communicative disorders major with a 3.98 G.P.A., Canales was runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school-record time at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship for Redlands. A native of Redlands, Cal., she was a two-time Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion in track and earned the NCAA Elite 89 Award during the cross country season.
A biology major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Hoffman helped Wartburg win NCAA Division III championships during both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2012. A native of Epworth, Iowa, she earned All-American honors with a sixth-place finish in the shot put during the NCAA outdoor championship. Hoffman also received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
An environmental studies major with a 3.87 G.P.A., Jackey led Washington (Mo.) to its first-ever NCAA Division III women’s cross country championship with a fourth-place individual finish in November. A native of Newark, Del., Jackey also earned six All-American finishes during the indoor and outdoor track seasons, establishing five school records. During the 2012 NCAA indoor championship, Jackey was national runner-up in the one-mile run and was part of the national runner-up distance medley relay team. She also earned outdoor All-American finishes in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000-meter runs this spring.
Kuntz, who has a double major in mechanical engineering and physics with a 4.00 G.P.A., was the NCAA Elite 89 Award winner at the 2012 NCAA indoor championship. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Kuntz is an All-American pole vaulter who won New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships in the indoor and outdoor pole vault for MIT.
A philosophy, politics and economics triple major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Lydens is a three-time All-American for Pomona-Pitzer. A native of Tokyo, Japan, she has competed for the cross country and track teams. Lydens turned in the best individual finish in school history with a third-place showing at the 2011 NCAA cross country championship. At the 2011 NCAA outdoor track championship, Lydens was runner-up in the 5,000-meter run. Lyden interned at NATO headquarters in Belgium last summer and will intern with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. during the summer of 2012.
