CoSIDA elects new Officers and Board of Directors members for 2012-13
The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) have chosen a new set of officers and Board of Director members to serve the professional athletic communications asssociation for the 2012-13 academic year and beyond.
Joe Hornstein, Director of Sports Information at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Fla., will serve as the 57th President of CoSIDA for a one-year term in 2012-13. Hornstein, 40, is one of two at the age of 40 to become CoSIDA President. Hornstein is the second youngest person to assume the president’s role in CoSIDA history, with Langston Rogers (Delta State/Ole Miss) assuming the 1980-81 presidency at age 36.
Hornstein replaces Tom Di Camillo, Assistant Commissioner of the Pacific West Conference and the public relations director for Central Arizona College, who served as President in 2010-11. Hornstein was CoSIDA's first Vice President during 2011-12.
The passing of the gavel and the announcement of the new officers and Board members took place in conjunction with the annual CoSIDA Convention, which took place June 23-26 at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis.
Also elected to serve the 2,800-member CoSIDA organization for the 2012-13 term and in the presidential rotation are 1st Vice President Shelly Poe, Auburn University Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations; 2nd Vice President Eric McDowell, Union College (NY) Assistant Athletic Director/Sports Information; and 3rd Vice President Judy Willson, Mountain West Conference Associate Director of Communications.
"It has been a long term goal for me to serve CoSIDA in this capacity," stated Hornstein. "I'm humbled and honored that the day has arrived. I can remember the first committee I joined, the first task I took on. I'm appreciative to the Board and our membership for allowing me to take on this post. We have a lot of work to do and I am greatly appreciative of the honor to serve as CoSIDA President for 2012-13 and to follow in the footsteps of tremendous individuals who have been in the CoSIDA leadership role."
In addition to the officers, the following will serve terms of three years on the CoSIDA Board of Directors. Elected as At-Large Representatives are Rob Carolla (Big 12 Conference) and Dan Drutz (Saint Peter's College). Selected to represent the College Division is at-large representative Mark Adkins (Manchester College [Ind.]). All these terms run through 2015.
The slate of 2012-13 candidates were nominated by the membership during the spring semester and were selected by the CoSIDA Nominating Committee, comprised of the organization's past presidents and out-going Board of Director members. That Committee was chaired by Nick Joos, Baylor University Executive Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and CoSIDA's third Past President.
The current CoSIDA Past Presidents serving on the 2012-13 Board are immediate Past President Tom Di Camillo (serving through 2015), Temple University Senior Associate AD/Communications Larry Dougherty (serving through 2014), Wisconsin Associate AD for External Relations Justin Doherty (serving through 2013).
Those currently serving on the Board of Directors are at-large representatives Kent Brown (University of Illinois) and Ed Hill of Howard University along with College Division representatives Greg Goings (Bowie State), at-large representative; Mark Fleming (Moravian College), Northeast Region; Cindy Fotti (Columbia College), Central Region; Dave Walters (Guilford College), South Region. All these terms run through 2014.
Jeff Hodges (North Alabama) continues as Secretary/Digest Editor. Ex-Officio members are CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik, Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal and Director of Internal Affairs/Treasurer Will Roleson.

Joe Hornstein presently serves as Director of Sports Information for the FIU athletics department in Miami, Fla., in addition to his national post as President of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the 2012-13 academic year.
A native of North Miami Beach, Fla., Hornstein is a long-time and active member of CoSIDA, previously serving on the Board from 2009-12. Prior to his stint with the Board, a key prior leadership role within CoSIDA came during 2009-11 when he served as Chair for the newly formed Division I Management Council.
In 2011, he oversaw the program development for the annual CoSIDA Convention in Marco Island, arranging participation from noted national speakers Lou Holtz, Lee Corso, Bob Williams (NCAA V.P. of Communications), Amy Perko (Executive Dir., the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics), Malcolm Moran (Professor and Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society), Erik Christianson (NCAA Director of Public and Media Relations), Ronnie Ramos (NCAA Managing Director of Digital Communications), Bill Hancock (Executive Dir. of the Bowl Championship Series), amongst others.
In addition to professional organizations, Hornstein has been active with community involvement, primarily through membership in Rotary International. Through Rotary, Hornstein has participated with Polio Plus, Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army and holiday season food distribution.
Prior to joining FIU Athletics, Hornstein worked five years with University of Central Florida Athletics and four years guiding the media relations effort for the historic Orange Bowl Committee (OBC), lastly as the organization's Vice President for Communications.
At the OBC, his primary role was the management of the media operations for the former FedEx Orange Bowl (now Discover Orange Bowl) and week-long Festival, fostering the OBC's media relationships on a national level and within the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East Conference geographic regions. He formerly served on the media policies and public relations committees for both the Bowl Championship Series and Football Bowl Association.
Along with participation in CoSIDA, Hornstein carries the UCF brand into his association with the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), where he has served since 2007 as an Ex-Officio member with the organization's Board of Directors. Subsequently, Hornstein has also served on the FWAA's Ethics Committee in January 2009.
Before the OBC, Hornstein worked five years as an Assistant Sports Information Director for the University of Miami, working primarily with the Hurricanes' football and baseball programs. As part of the UM football media relations arm, he gained valuable experience working on five bowl-winning teams, including the program's highly publicized 2001 National Championship season. Most notably during his tenure was coordinating publicity and campaigns for nearly 20 eventual NFL first-round draft picks.
With UM baseball, he had the opportunity of working two College World Series championship seasons in 1999 and 2001. His 2000 baseball yearbook, which covered UM's 1999 National Championship, was selected as "Best in the Nation" and "Best Cover" by CoSIDA.
Hornstein returned to Miami in 1998 after spending three seasons as a graduate assistant for the Florida State University Sports Information Office. At FSU, he worked with several of the Seminoles' Olympic sport programs, including oversight of the 1996 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship, held in Tallahassee, and travel to three football bowl trips (two Sugar, one Orange).
Hornstein graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations from the University of South Florida. He first started as a student assistant in the USF Sports Information Office following a pair of chance meetings with former USF AD, the late Lee Roy Selmon. The great Hall of Famer arranged for an internship with him and tasks to support his early groundwork of what would eventually be the school's upstart football program that began later in 1997.
Hornstein was a member of the Theta Beta chapter of Sigma Chi at USF. Growing up in Pembroke Pines and Ft. Lauderdale, he graduated from Cooper City High School.
