CoSIDA E-DIRECTORY INFORMATION

We also need your cooperation in updating your organization’s directory information. Accuracy of the 2012-13 E-Directory can only be achieved with your help. We respectively request your assistance in this regard by FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14.

The directory is important to both CoSIDA membership as well as the media who rely on it as an important resource. The only way your respective school information can be accurate is if you take the time to review and update it personally.

• Those who have moved into a new position or who have had staff changes recently are reminded to update their personal and/or organizational CoSIDA E-Directory information. There is an online directory and a PDF version of the directory. You can access your information and update it and/or request custodial status of your organization's account so you can update staff and organizational information, pay dues online, etc., by going HERE.

If you find inaccurate information for your school/organization we ask you to please go to CoSIDA.com and do the following:

- select the Membership link; at the pull-down menu at the top of CoSIDA’s site, select "Update Your Directory Information"
- Everyone can update their personal information here; to update your school/organization information, you MUST be the custodian of your account.
- If you wish to have custodial status, you can request that information on the page noted above. If you require assistance, use this link: http://cosida.com/contact.aspx.

Strategic Branding Review Update

As many CoSIDA members are aware, CoSIDA’s Board of Directors has entered a partnership agreement with Cryder Rinebold of Indianapolis to conduct a branding-based review of CoSIDA during the course of the next 12-to-15 months. This partnership began in May. The letter on this topic to the membership, along with a list of major reasons for this important process, can be accessed HERE.

Dennis Cryder and JoJo Rinebold have conducted several interview focus meetings with several organizations within CoSIDA and the profession. They met with members of the ECAC-SIDA Board in Pittsburgh in early June and then held interview sessions at the CoSIDA St. Louis Convention with the Board as well as nine CoSIDA divisional /advocacy boards. Eric McDowell, John Humenik and Barb Kowal met with Cryder Rinebold in Indianapolis on July 11-12th to further plan the next few months of this review process. Humenik is working with Cryder Rinebold to arrange meetings for them to conduct focus interview sessions with other groups in intercollegiate athletics (ADs, commissioners, NACDA affiliates, NCAA, NAIA, etc) to discuss CoSIDA and the profession from their perspective. A quantitative research firm (Fondulas Strategic Group) has been retained by CoSIDA/Cryder Rinebold to help develop an online survey when appropriate and then provide a quantitative analysis regarding survey results.

This online survey - for our full membership - will be developed within the next two-three months and we hope that you will take the time to complete it when you receive it in the future so that we can gather needed feedback.

Continuing Education Sessions

CoSIDA’s 2012-13 year continuing education program will kick off in September with an on-demand series of presentations and panels from the 2012 CoSIDA Convention. These on-demand videos (which were provided and produced by NewTek, CoSIDA's official continuing education video production provider) are a prominent piece of our fall/winter continuing ed intiatives. Please see the schedule listed online in our CoSIDA Calendar/Dates to Remember. More information will be online and sent via email to the membership in early September.

The CoSIDA Board would like to thank NewTek as well as ASAP Sports (CoSIDA’s official instant transcript services provider) and TRZ Sports /Teamline (CoSIDA’s official conference call provider) for their support of CoSIDA’s continuing education initiatives.

• To begin the new academic year and in conjunction with the online continuing education session, the CoSIDA membership will have another resource - a new online learning center/Resource Library September 7. Please look for an email on the unveiling of that Resource Library the week of Sept. 3.

• CoSIDA 3rd Vice President Judy Willson (Mountain West Conference) is coordinating our conference call/webinar continuing education program this year. If you have ideas or want to present on a call/webcast, Judy can be contacted via jwillson@themwc.com.

• CoSIDA 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union- N.Y.) will coordinate our programming for the 2013 CoSIDA Convention in Orlando. If you have ideas in that regard or want to coordinate a specific session, please contact him at mcdowele@union.edu.

Committee Related

President Joe Hornstein, along with CoSIDA’s officers and staff, worked with Debbie Copp (Oklahoma), Chair of the Committee on Committee, to finalize the committee listings for the upcoming year. Want to join a committee or learn more about a committee? Please contact Copp via email for more information (dcopp@ou.edu).

Capital One Academic All-America® Program

2012-13 Academic All-America® master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements (PDF)

• Nominations for the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Hall of Fame open on Monday, Sept. 17. Please review previous Academic All-America selections from you school to see if they qualify for this prestigious honor. You can learn more about the nomination criteria for this award process HERE.

• Please check CoSIDA.com for the latest Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-America® information. We remind everyone that you must be a member of CoSIDA to nominate your deserving student-athletes and vote on the Academic All-District ballots.

CoSIDA, in conjunction with corporate partner Capital One, has launched a new Capital One Academic All-America website. The website, developed by a Capital One’ partner ad agency Campfire, is: http://www.capitaloneacademicallamerica.com/. There is tremendous historical and current AAA content already on the site and it will be fully developed during the 2012-13 academic year.

• The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®"mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and AAA Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (johnhumenik@cosida.com) or Academic All-America Committee member Dick Lipe (rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.

Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.

National Organization Initiatives & Divisional Initiatives

NATIONAL

NCAA

CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik, Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal and 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union- N.Y.) traveled to the NCAA offices in Indianapolis from July 12-13. They met with the following NCAA departments during the course of their two days of meetings: National SAAC, Division II, Division III, Championships/Alliances, Statistics, Communications, Digital/Social Media Strategies and NCAA News/Champion Magazine.

NACDA

John Humenik, Barb Kowal and Will Roleson will meet with the NACDA staff in Cleveland on Sept. 17-18 to discuss our partnership as well as finalize several administrative aspects associated with the upcoming CoSIDA Convention at NACDA which takes place June 12-15, 2013 in Orlando.

CoSIDA’s “NACDA Transition Team” continues to update and refine a “Frequently Asked Questions” document to address several questions associated with this convention. Review the current NACDA FAQ document HERE. We strongly encourage all members to review this in preparation for CoSIDA’s Convention moving to the NACDA Convention site in Orlando.

CoSIDA’s leadership continues to have the opportunity to discuss our organization and profession via a “CoSIDA Corner” column that is published in each issue of NACDA’s Athletics Administration Magazine. The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure throughout the full intercollegiate community.

The next CoSIDA Corner, written by President Joe Hornstein on the topic of the ongoing CoSIDA strategic branding study, will appear in the October issue.

DIVISIONAL

Ann King (The Sage Colleges) is Chair of a NCAA Division III/CoSIDA Strategic Communications Working Group that was put together last spring. The group is composed of reps from D3SIDA, the DIII Management Council, DIII Commissioners Association, and DIII National SAAC representative. It was established to identify professional development opportunities for campus and conference information/communications directors at the NCAA DIII level. The goal of the group is to support the division’s identity initiative and strategic plan by enhancing the athletics communications at the DIII level. The group is seeking to identify ways in which to better allocate existing and new resources to achieve these goals. They are considering planning and developing a model strategic communications document and developing a grant program to directly support the creation or enhancement of sports information positions at this NCAA divisional level. King provided a August update on the work of this group and you can read more about that HERE.

D3SIDA President Larry Happel (Central College) sent a letter to Division III athletics directors regarding the new NCAA requirement for complete box scores for men’s and women’s volleyball in 2013 on behalf of that divisional board. That leadership group is asking them to support providing additional trained staff to help fulfill this mandate. That letter was endorsed by the NCAA Statistics Group, the NCAA Statistics Advisory Board and the Division III governance staff led by VP Dan Dutcher. The D3SIDA Board is also seeking the endorsement of the Division III Conference Commissioners Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

NAIA-SIDA President Jay Stancil (Union, KY) represented that group at the NAIA’s National Administrative Council meeting in Kansas City on August 24. In 2011, NAIA-SIDA gained a seat on this important NAIA council and that position is filled by the current NAIA-SIDA president.

John Humenik will represent CoSIDA at the annual meeting of D1-A Athletics Directors Association in Dallas on Sept. 24-25. This is the fifth consecutive year that CoSIDA has received an invitation to this meeting. Prior to CoSIDA hiring an Executive Director it had never received that invitation.

John Humenik and Barb Kowal compiled a monthly “Communications Watch for Today’s AD” newsletter which is forwarded to Dutch Baughman, Executive Director of D1-A Athletics Directors Association. (He requested this type of regular newsletter of Humenik/ CoSIDA at that group’s meeting in Dallas in September of 2010, and since October 2010 this newsletter goes to Baughman, who then distributes it to the DI-A ADA membership. Humenik also sends this newsletter to the Presidents/Chairs of CoSIDA’s various divisional leadership groups and encourages them to pass along this newsletter to the president of their respective ADA for distribution to their membership.

Marketing & Communication Matters

• CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal is coordinating a redesign of the CoSIDA.com website in conjunction with SIDEARM, our website provider. The redesigned site is expected to launch later in the fall.

If you have suggestions for CoSIDA.com content or wish to contribute to our website, please send those suggestions to barbkowal@cosida.com.

During the month of August, 13 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were 23 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA  organizational umbrella.

Also in June, three CoSIDA-based features/stories were featured on NCAA.com websites.

In August, 29 articles were posted on CoSIDA.com. The CoSIDA Twitter page had 204 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.

The CoSIDA LinkedIn group continues to attract members and the group now totals 1,550+ members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators. Please join and submit your ideas, questions or comments to make this a lively forum for our members.

Convention Matters

Financial reports for the convention in St. Louis are complete and show that revenues exceeded expenses by $18,223, the organization’s best convention fiscal performance in the past four years. Analysis showed it cost $299 per paid registrant for CoSIDA to put on the convention. The registration fee was $195, and convention sponsorships/exhibitor fees contributed another $93 per registrant.

The combined registration fee ($195) and per person sponsorship/exhibitor contribution of $93 covered $288 of the $299 per person cost. The per person convention cost of $299 (food/beverage, audio/visual, speaker fee/cost, etc.) was a marked improvement from recent years. That figure stood at $345 for Marco Island (2011), $342 for San Francisco (2010) and $377 for San Antonio (2009).

CoSIDA 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union- N.Y.) will coordinate programming for the 2013 CoSIDA Convention in Orlando. If you have ideas or want to coordinate a specific session, please contact him at mcdowele@union.edu.

Blake Timm (Pacific-Oregon) and Charles Bloom (Southeastern Conference) are coordinating ideas and plans for specific college division (NCAA DII, NCAA DIII and NAIA) and university division (Division I) programming for the Orlando Convention. If you have ideas in this regard please contact them at timmbr@pacificu.edu and cbloom@sec.org.

Sponsorship Matters

Fifty-eight (58) groups stepped forward in support of the recent CoSIDA convention and/or the upcoming academic year. CoSIDA’s leadership kindly ask that you take some time to drop these folks a thank you note for their support. Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) and iQ Media joined the growing list of CoSIDA sponsors during the month of August.

You can access that sponsorship directory HERE (PDF) or view on this page.
