2012-13 E-Directory Update

• CoSIDA's 2012-13 directory is now available in an online format and the new PDF version will be available in October. We would ask that you forward along the updated PDF version of the directory to appropriate media representatives in your locale so that they would have the most recent edition of this publication.

This PDF version of the CoSIDA Directory was compiled based on information provided to CoSIDA by individual institutions/organizations/membership as of late September. If there are inaccuracies in the current edition when it is released later this month it is due to those schools/organizations not following up with repeated requests by CoSIDA’s staff to update their directory information prior to the release of this updated document. If you find inaccurate information for your school/organization we ask you to please go to CoSIDA.com and do the following:

- select the Membership link; at the pull-down menu at the top of CoSIDA’s site, select "Update Your Directory Information".
- Everyone can update their personal information here; to update your school/organization information, you MUST be the custodian of your account.
- If you wish to have custodial status, you can request that information on the page noted above. If you require assistance, use this link: http://cosida.com/contact.aspx.

Those who have moved into a new position or who have had staff changes recently are reminded to update their personal and/or organizational CoSIDA E-Directory information. See further information HERE.

Questions? Please contact Will Roleson, CoSIDA Director of Internal Operations, at willroleson@cosida.com.

Strategic Branding Review Update

As many CoSIDA members are aware, in May CoSIDA’s Board of Directors entered a partnership agreement with Cryder Rinebold of Indianapolis to conduct a branding-based review of CoSIDA during the course of the next 12-to-15 months. A list of major reasons for this important process can be accessed HERE.

This summer, Dennis Cryder and JoJo Rinebold conducted numerous interview focus meetings with several organizations within CoSIDA and the profession.

In the last month, CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik worked with Cryder Rinebold to arrange meetings and interviews with other groups in intercollegiate athletics (ADs, commissioners, NACDA affiliates, NCAA, NAIA, etc) to discuss CoSIDA and the profession from their perspective. A quantitative research firm (Fondulas Strategic Research) has been retained by CoSIDA/Cryder Rinebold to help develop an online survey and then provide a quantitative analysis regarding survey results.

Recently the following meetings have taken place or are scheduled for purposes of this study:
Sept. 24:        Interviews with D1-A AD Association (Dallas)
Sept. 26-27:   NACDA Executive Committee conference call
Sept. 27:        DII ADA/Commissioners (Indianapolis)
Oct. 3:            NJCAA national staff (conference call)
Oct. 5:            NCAA Communications Department (Indianapolis)
NCAA VP's for Governance Division (Indianapolis)
Oct. 10:          NAIA national staff (Kansas City)
Oct. 15:          DIII ADA/Commissioners (Indianapolis)

The aforementioned online survey - for our full membership - will be developed within the next six weeks and we hope that you will take the time to complete it when you receive it in the future so that we can gather needed feedback.

Continuing Education Sessions

• On September 7th CoSIDA launched its Online Reference and Resource Library. You can learn more about this wonderful membership continuing education service and access the database HERE.

• CoSIDA’s 2012-13 year continuing education program kicked off in September with an on-demand series of presentations and panels from the 2012 CoSIDA Convention. These on-demand videos are available on CoSIDA's YouTube channel. In coordination with Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, they were produced by NewTek, CoSIDA's official continuing education video production provider as a prominent piece of our fall/winter continuing ed intiatives. View the first two on-demand videos on social media engagement and serving the student-athlete.

Please see the full on-demand video schedule HERE.

The CoSIDA Board would like to thank NewTek as well as ASAP Sports (CoSIDA’s official instant transcript services provider) and TRZ Sports /Teamline (CoSIDA’s official conference call provider) for their support of CoSIDA’s continuing education initiatives.

CoSIDA 3rd Vice President Judy Willson (Mountain West Conference) is coordinating our conference call/webinar continuing education program this year. If you have ideas or want to present on a call/webcast, Judy can be contacted via jwillson@themwc.com.

• CoSIDA 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union- N.Y.) is actively working with the Convention Programming Commmittee on programming for the 2013 CoSIDA Convention in Orlando. If you have ideas in that regard or want to coordinate a specific session, please contact him at mcdowele@union.edu.

Blake Timm (Pacific-Oregon) and Charles Bloom (Southeastern Conference) will coordinate ideas for specific college division (NCAA DII, NCAA DIII and NAIA) and university division (Division I) programming, respectively, for the Orlando Convention. If you have ideas or want to contribute as a panelist/presenter, please contact them at timmbr@pacificu.edu or cbloom@sec.org.

Capital One Academic All-America® Program

2012-13 Academic All-America® master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements (PDF)

• Nominations for the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Hall of Fame opened on Monday, Sept. 17 and will close on Nov. 2. (All nominations are done online). Please review previous Academic All-America® selections from you school to see if they qualify for this prestigious honor. See nomination criteria and login information for this award process HERE.

• Please check CoSIDA.com for the latest Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-America® information. We remind everyone that you must be a member of CoSIDA to nominate your deserving student-athletes and vote on the Academic All-District ballots. The first fall nominations begin on Tuesday, Oct. 2 when men's and women's soccer nominations open in all divisions; soccer nominations close on Oct 16. This is followed by the football and women's volleyball nomination period (Oct. 9-23).

CoSIDA, in conjunction with corporate partner Capital One, has launched a new Capital One Academic All-America® website. The website, developed by a Capital One’ partner ad agency Campfire, is: http://www.capitaloneacademicallamerica.com/. There is tremendous historical and current Academic All-America® content already on the site and it will be fully developed during the 2012-13 academic year.

• The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®"mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and Academic All-America® Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (johnhumenik@cosida.com) or Academic All-America® Committee chair emeritus Dick Lipe (rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.

Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.

National Organization Based Initiatives

NACDA

John Humenik, Barb Kowal and Will Roleson met with the NACDA staff in Cleveland on Sept. 17-18 to discuss our partnership and finalize administrative aspects associated with the CoSIDA Convention at NACDA next June (12-15) in Orlando. Humenik, Kowal and Roleson will meet with the NACDA staff and Orlando World Center Marriott hotel staff from Oct. 10-12 to finalize aspects of the 2013 Convention.

CoSIDA’s “NACDA Transition Team” continues to update and refine a “Frequently Asked Questions” document to address several questions associated with this convention. Review the current NACDA FAQ document HERE. We strongly encourage all members to review this in preparation for CoSIDA’s Convention moving to the NACDA Convention site in Orlando.

CoSIDA’s leadership continues to contribute a "CoSIDA Corner" published in each issue of NACDA's Athletic Administration Magazine discussing our organization and profession. The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure throughout the full intercollegiate community.

Later in October on CoSIDA.com you can read President Joe Hornstein’s October “CoSIDA Corner Column” which deals with the Cryder Rinebold strategic analysis of CoSIDA.

NCAA

Executive Director John Humenik and CoSIDA President Joe Hornstein are working with NCAA Director of Media and Public Relations Erik Christianson to put together plans and meetings for CoSIDA’s leadership contingent that will attend the annual NCAA Convention in Dallas from January 15-18.

John Humenik and Barb Kowal compiled a monthly “Communications Watch for Today’s AD” newsletter which is forwarded to Dutch Baughman, Executive Director of D1-A Athletics Directors Association. This is the third academic year that this monthly email - with links to communication topics important to senior athletic leaders - has been circulated by Baughmann. Humenik also sends this newsletter to the Presidents/Chairs of CoSIDA’s various divisional leadership groups and encourages them to pass along this newsletter to the president of their respective ADA for distribution to their membership.

Marketing & Communication Matters

CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, on behalf of the CoSIDA leadership, is coordinating a redesign of the CoSIDA.com website in conjunction with SIDEARM, our website provider. Early new designs and layouts are being reviewed, and the redesigned site will launch later in the fall.

If you have suggestions for CoSIDA.com content or wish to contribute to our website, please send those suggestions to barbkowal@cosida.com.

During the month of September, 12 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were 16 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA organizational umbrella.

In September, 25 articles were posted on CoSIDA.com. The CoSIDA Twitter page had 195 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.

The CoSIDA LinkedIn group continues to attract members and the group now totals 1,521 members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators. Please join and submit your ideas, questions or comments to make this a lively forum for our members.

Convention Matters

CoSIDA 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union-N.Y.) is coordinating our programming for the 2013 CoSIDA Convention in Orlando along with the Programming Committee and are in the final stage of planning many sessions. If you have ideas in this regard or want to coordinate a specific session, please contact him at mcdowele@union.edu.

Blake Timm (Pacific-Oregon) and Charles Bloom (Southeastern Conference) will coordinate ideas for specific college division (NCAA DII, NCAA DIII and NAIA) and university division (Division I) programming for the Orlando Convention, respectively. If you have ideas for programming, please contact them at timmbr@pacificu.edu or cbloom@sec.org.

Financial reports for the convention in St. Louis are complete and show that revenues exceeded expenses by $16,000, the organization’s best convention fiscal performance in the past four years. Analysis showed it cost $301 per paid registrant for CoSIDA to put on the convention. The registration fee was $195, and convention sponsorships/exhibitor fees contributed another $93 per registrant. The combined registration fee ($195) and per person sponsorship/exhibitor contribution of $93 covered $288 of the $301 per person cost. The per person convention cost of $301 (food/beverage, audio/visual, speaker fee/cost, etc.) was a marked improvement from recent years. That figure stood at $345 for Marco Island (2011), $342 for San Francisco (2010) and $377 for San Antonio (2009). At this time it is projected that per person cost for the convention in Orlando will be in the $325-350 range.
