Strategic Branding Review Continues; Survey Concludes

CoSIDA’s Board of Directors agreed last April to hire Cryder Rinebold of Indianapolis to conduct a strategic branding-based review of CoSIDA over the course of the next 12-15 months. On Jan. 10-11, CoSIDA staff members John Humenik, Barb Kowal and Will Roleson met with Cryder Rinebold in Indianapolis to review quantitative and qualitative results from various interview sessions that were conducted from June-October and a survey that was conducted during November, finalizing a presentation for the CoSIDA leadership group meeting the following week in Dallas at the NCAA Convention.

On Jan. 15, Dennis Cryder and JoJo Rinebold conducted a three-hour session with that CoSIDA leadership group: President Joe Hornstein (FIU); 1st VP Shelly Poe (Auburn); 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union N.Y.); 3rd VP Judy Willson (Mountain West Conference); Secretary Jeff Hodges (North Alabama); CDMAC chair Blake Timm (Pacific [Ore.]); DII SIDA president Greg Goings (Bowie State); D3 SIDA president Larry Happel (Central College); NAIA-SIDA president Jay Stancil (Union Ky.) and CoSIDA staff.

The extensive Power Point presentation reviewed in detail survey results and their observations from 24 interview focus sessions with groups inside and outside of CoSIDA, as well as recommendations for the CoSIDA leadership to consider moving forward. President Hornstein updated the full CoSIDA Board of Directors Jan. 24 and provided them the extensive Power Point presentation for review. Currently, Cryder Rinebold is working on an executive summary of this report to provide to the entire CoSIDA membership for review.

Continuing Education Sessions

On Tuesday, Jan. 8, the ESPN Stats and Production Research staff conducted a webinar for Division I men's basketball media relations contacts to discuss the BPI (Basketball Power Index) ratings system for DI basketball. The NCAA DI Men's Basketball Committee uses this in its discussion of tournament invitees. Over 50 CoSIDA members participated in the webinar. For webinar playback/on-demand viewing, please go HERE to access the archived information.

On Wednesday, Jan. 16, an NCAA Convention educational session panel from Dallas entitled “Social Media and the Student-Athlete” was made available via live streaming to the CoSIDA membership and athletic community at-large. That session is in on-demand playback form and can be found HERE.

The CoSIDA Board would like to thank NewTek as well as ASAP Sports (CoSIDA’s official instant transcript services provider) and TRZ Sports /Teamline (CoSIDA’s official conference call provider) for their support of CoSIDA’s continuing education initiatives. NewTek produced the fall continuing ed video series (with all videos from 2012 Convention sessions) and those can be viewed on-demand HERE via CoSIDA's YouTube channel.

CoSIDA 3rd Vice President Judy Willson (Mountain West Conference) is coordinating the spring semester conference call/webinar continuing education program from February-May. If you have ideas or want to present on a call/webcast, Judy can be contacted via jwillson@themwc.com.

The NCAA/CoSIDA Media Coordination Advisory Board held a January 11th call. Among the topics discussed were the activation materials for the Division III 75th anniversary, the winter championships FTP site and statistical integration with various providers, as well as the NCAA’s policies regarding baseball/softball stats submissions. CoSIDA members are reminded that if there are any issues with content on NCAA.com, they can e-mail Turner Sports at ncaa-content@turner.com.

• The NCAA Championships and Alliances staff recently published their fourth monthly NCAA Media Coordination and Statistics Newsletter in January which can be read HERE. NACDA

John Humenik attended the annual NACDA Mid-Year Affiliates Meeting January 26-28, the fifth consecutive year that CoSIDA has been invited to this annual meeting. It brings together all of the Executive Directors and Presidents of management groups in intercollegiate athletics to discuss initiatives they are undertaking and how these groups could work together for mutual benefit. Humenik believes this particular meeting is perhaps the most beneficial to CoSIDA each year.

During the three days of this meeting Humenik had the opportunity to make a presentation before joint representatives from the following 14 groups: Minority Opportunities Athletics Assoc. (MOAA), Division 1-A Athletic Directors Assoc. (DI-A ADA), Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors, Assoc. (FCS ADA), Division 1-AAA Athletic Directors Assoc. (D1-AAA ADA), Division II Athletic Directors Assoc. (DII ADA), Division III Athletic Directors Assoc. (DIII ADA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NC4S), College Athletic Business Management Assoc. (CABMA), National Assoc. of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), National Assoc. of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), National Association of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA), Collegiate Event and Facility Management Association (CEFMA), Intercollegiate Licensing Assoc. (ICLA), and National Assoc. for Athletics Compliance (NAAC).

Humenik also met individually with the President/Executive Director of each organization in attendance and was invited for the second consecutive year to participate in a private meeting session with NCAA President Mark Emmert.

We strongly encourage all CoSIDA members to review the “Frequently Asked Questions” document in preparation for CoSIDA's Convention (June 12-15) moving to the NACDA & Affiliates Convention in Orlando. Review the current NACDA FAQ document HERE.

CoSIDA’s leadership continues to contribute a "CoSIDA Corner" published in each issue of NACDA's Athletic Administration Magazine discussing our organization and profession. The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure throughout the full intercollegiate community.

The February 2013 column discusses how CoSIDA has been a leader in social media strategy, education and hands-on continuing education is available for viewing HERE. The column was written by Chris Syme, Chair of the CoSIDA New Media/Technology Committee.

Marketing & Communications Updates

CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, on behalf of the CoSIDA leadership, is coordinating a redesign of the CoSIDA.com website in conjunction with SIDEARM, our website provider. The layout and designs are finalized, and the redesigned site is scheduled to launch in February.

If you have suggestions for CoSIDA.com content or wish to contribute to our website, please send those suggestions to barbkowal@cosida.com.

During the month of January, 15 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were 22 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA organizational umbrella.

In January, 34 articles were posted on CoSIDA.com. The CoSIDA Twitter page had 183 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.

The CoSIDA LinkedIn group continues to attract members and the group now totals 1,659 members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators. Please join and submit your ideas, questions or comments to make this a lively forum for our members.

Capital One Academic All-America® Program

2012-13 Academic All-America® master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements (PDF)

In January, the Capital One Academic All-America® men's and women's basketball Academic All-District teams were announced. Awards for those student-athletes are currently in production and will be shipped to those CoSIDA members who nominated them in February. Please see the Capital One Academic All-America® webpages for more information and team listings.

CoSIDA's corporate partner Capital One maintains the Capital One Academic All-America® website which was launched in the summer. The website, developed by a Capital One’s partner ad agency Campfire, is: http://www.capitaloneacademicallamerica.com/. There is tremendous historical and current Academic All-America® content already on the site and more is being developed.

• Thanks to the many CoSIDA members who have produced Capital One Academic All-America® videos for student-athletes who have received 2012 fall Capital One AAA honors. Mark Adkins (Manchester College) from the Academic All-America® Committee is coordinating these efforts. You can view these short interviews at the Capital One Academic All-America® YouTube channel.

NOTE: Deadlines for Capital One Academic All-America® nominations and voting are strictly adhered to. In fairness to all who nominate/vote prior to the deadline and for the integrity of the program, there can be no extensions and no exceptions if the deadline is missed. Please plan appropriately now to make sure your information in place to meet the respective deadlines and that the people at your school who will be nominating student-athletes are paid members of CoSIDA for the 2012-13 year.

If you have questions regarding the nomination criteria for the AAA program, or other questions relating to the awards program, please closely review the information page and FAQ document on the CoSIDA website which we believe will address your question.

• The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®"mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and Academic All-America® Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (johnhumenik@cosida.com) or Academic All-America® Committee chair emeritus Dick Lipe (rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.

Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.
