SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - Howie Davis is one of six inductees who will be enshrined into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 26. The 2013 hall of fame class will be inducted at the Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner at 7:30 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities.
When it comes to serving Springfield College athletics and sports information, Howard M. Davis is a veteran.
Davis served as the Springfield College sports information director from 1968-1980, an era of legendary coaching and athletics at the institution. Davis becomes just the fourth inductee into the hall of fame without a degree from Springfield College.
When he arrived on campus is 1968, he was thrilled to work with the “who’s who of college coaching,” and now, he’s become part of the who’s who of the Springfield College community.
Davis became the first Springfield College sports information director to be elected as the president of the New England Sports Information Directors Association; president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Sports Information Directors; president of the national College Sports Information Directors of America asssociation (CoSIDA) in 1982-83; and served on the CoSIDA Board of Directors.
Davis wrote the first textbook in the history of college sports publicity, entitled Basic Concepts of Sports Information, and has won 28 national awards for a variety of athletic publications.
In 1989, Davis was elected to the CoSIDA Hall of Fame and, in 1995, he was awarded the CoSIDA Arch Ward Award, the highest honor given by the organization for excellence in the profession.
After his time at Springfield, Davis served as the sports information director at the University of Massachusetts from 1980-1993. In addition, he served as the press coordinator at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Davis has worked as an adjunct faculty member at both Springfield College and the University of Massachusetts in the sports management departments. He continues to serve as the official scorer for men’s and women’s basketball for both institutions.
