TOWSON, Md. – Clarion University senior hitter Hannah Heeter leads the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A biology/pre-medicine double major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Heeter is the winner of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II volleyball.
The Capital One Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
Heeter (right), was a Capital One Academic All-America® second-team selection in both volleyball and basketball last year, the first Clarion student-athlete to be so honored. This year, Heeter is a first team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West selection and a Daktronics All-Region selection in volleyball for the second straight year.
The Seneca, Pa., native ranks second in the PSAC in hitting percentage at .308 (338 kills, 97 errors, 783 attempts), while also averaging a 2.62 kills per set and a team-best 0.77 blocks per set (99 blocks). Heeter and her teammates compiled a 32-5 overall record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament.
In addition to her Academic All-America awards, Heeter was named the PSAC Pete Nevins Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year as the conference’s top scholar-athlete in 2012-13. In addition, she was named the NCAA Division II Commissioner Conferences Association Atlantic Region Female Athlete of the Year. Heeter was also the PSAC’s Champion Scholar-Award winner in 2011 for having the highest GPA among athletes at the PSAC Championship event.
Eleven of the 19 members of the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with three players sporting a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The seven members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.87.
Heeter is the only first team member with a previous Capital One Academic All-America® recognition. Joining Heeter on the first team are junior Julia Ashen of California State University, Monterey Bay and five seniors: Julia Bates of University of Central Missouri, Jill Edwards of Shippensburg University, Kacy Griffin of Colorado State University Pueblo, Kelsey Griffitts of King (Tenn.) University and Laura Iwuchukwu of West Texas A&M University.
Eleven of the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team members represent squads which qualified for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship. Iwuchukwu is one of four Academic All-America® choices who will play in the quarterfinals Thursday (Dec. 11) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The other quarterfinal participants are seniors Kayla Koenecke of Concordia (Minn.) University-St. Paul and Holly Reschke of the University of Tampa and junior Meagan Burke of Tampa. Koenecke and Reschke made the second team, while Burke is a third team member. Tampa is the only school with two 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team members.
Ashen led Cal State Monterey Bay to a school-record 18 victories this season. A Daktronics All-West Region first team member, Ashen led the California Collegiate Athletic Association in kills per set (4.31) and ranked second in total kills with a CSUMB-record 500 this season. The Salinas, Calif., native holds a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. as a human communications major.
Bates was the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection after leading Central Missouri with 10.95 assists per set. She also averaged 1.96 digs and 1.35 kills per set and hit .324 this year, helping the Jennies advance to the NCAA playoffs. A 2011 Daktronics third team All-American, Bates is fifth on Central Missouri’s all-time assists list. The Leavenworth, Kan., resident holds a 3.67 G.P.A. as a sports management major.
The 2013 PSAC East Player of the Year, Edwards was named to the AVCA All-Atlantic Region squad for the third consecutive year. She helped the Raiders win their first-ever NCAA playoff match this year. Edwards hit a personal-best .259 on the attack with single-season career highs of 417 digs, 60 blocks and 50 service aces to earn a spot on the Daktronics All-Atlantic Region team. A supply chain management major with a 3.58 G.P.A., Edwards hails from Raleigh, N.C.
Griffin holds a pristine 4.00 G.P.A. as a business management major. This year, the San Antonio, Texas, product averaged 9.74 assists per set. She is the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference Academic Player of the Year for volleyball. In 2012, Griffin was an Academic All-RMAC first team honoree.
A Bristol, Va. product, Griffitts helped King win 32 matches this season. In the classroom, she carries a 3.97 G.P.A. with a cell and molecular biology major. Griffitts led the Conference Carolinas with her .397 attack percentage. The first team All-Conference Carolinas pick helped the Tornado share the league’s regular season championship.
Iwuchukwu is an All-South Central Region middle blocker. The Edmond, Okla., native has registered 341 kills this season. She leads NCAA Division II in total blocks with 210 (26 solo, 184 assisted) for an average of 1.63 per set. Iwuchukwu and teammates won the school’s eighth straight Lone Star Conference Tournament title in addition to earning the South Central Region crown and quarterfinal berth Saturday. She is an elementary education major with a 3.94 G.P.A.
The five-member Capital One Academic All-America® second team includes three NCAA tournament participants. In addition to Koenecke of Concordia (Minn.)-St. Paul and Reschke of Tampa, Newberry College senior Samantha Parrish helped the Wolves make a 2013 NCAA appearance. The second team also includes Kentucky Wesleyan College junior Chelsea Brothers and Fairmont State University senior Brianna Swann. Brothers is the third and final 4.00 G.P.A. student on this year’s list. She is a middle grades education major with a math emphasis.
Anderson (S.C.) University junior Meghan Cautero earns Capital One Academic All-America® third team honors for the second consecutive year. She joins Heeter as the only repeater on this year’s honor list. Cautero and the Trojans made the NCAA tournament this year. She holds a 3.93 G.P.A. with her engineering major.
In addition to Cautero, the third team includes Burke of Tampa, senior Sarah Ambach of Holy Family University, senior Lisa Copeland of Harding University, senior Caitlyn Dean of Tusculum College, junior Laurel Miller of California (Pa.) University and senior Hayley Wright of the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Burke, Dean and Miller joined Cautero as NCAA playoff participants.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
