TOWSON, Md. – Senior middle blocker Katie Slay of Penn State University leads the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I volleyball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A communications sciences and disorders major with a 3.64 G.P.A., Slay has been named as the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America®
of the Year.
Slay (right) is the fourth different Penn State volleyball player to be named as the Academic All-America® of the Year. Bonnie Bremner won the award in 1998 and 1999 while Christa Harmotto was honored in 2008. In 2009, Megan Hodge was the Academic All-America® of the Year.
Slay has led the No. 2 Nittany Lions to a 30-2 record this season and a berth in the NCAA Regional round against Michigan State. She helped Penn State capture the Big Ten regular-season title with a 19-1 record and then won the tournament championship.
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Slay was named to the Big Ten All-Conference team for a third straight season. She leads Penn State with 1.64 blocks per set and a .404 attack percentage. She also averages 2.12 kills per set. Slay is ranked third in the nation in blocks and 24th in attack percentage.
A two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) second team All-American, she has also been named to the AVCA All-Region first team three times. The winner of the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award in 2011, she has been named Academic All-Big Ten three times. She has 602 blocks in her career and is sixth in school history.
Senior Natalie Hagglund of University of Southern California is the only player on the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division I volleyball first team who is a repeat selection. She was on the third team in 2012.
Seniors Stephanie Arnold of Eastern Illinois University, Camila Jersonsky of Auburn University, Shelby Kintzel of University of Northern Iowa and Sallie McLaurin of University of Oklahoma complete the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I volleyball first team.
The six members of the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division I Volleyball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.80.
A biological sciences major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Arnold is a native of Oregon, Wis. A senior middle hitter, she led the Panthers to an 18-12 record while earning All-Ohio Valley Conference first team honors. She averaged 2.51 kills per set and 1.04 blocks per set while leading Eastern Illinois with a .339 attack percentage. Arnold finished her career ranked in the sixth in school history with 370 blocks.
A communications major with a 3.59 G.P.A., Hagglund was named third team Capital One Academic All-America® in 2012. A native of Encinitas, Cal., the libero is a two-time AVCA first team All-America selection. She has been named as the Pac-12 Conference Libero of the Year of three times. She leads the Pac-12 and ranks 14th in the nation with 5.30 digs per set. Hagglund owns the USC record with 2,310 career digs. She has led the No. 6 Trojans to a 28-5 record and a berth in the NCAA Regional round against Brigham Young.
An electrical and polymer/fibers engineering major with a 3.86 G.P.A., Jersonsky led Auburn to an 19-11 record this season. A talented middle blocker from Buenos Aires, Argentina, she owns the Auburn career record with a .355 hitting percentage. Honored as the Southeastern Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she also earned All-SEC first team honors. She finished her career ranked in Auburn’s top 10 in total blocks (368), block assists (317), blocks per set (0.92) and solo blocks (51). She was a member of the Argentinean national team in 2011.
An elementary education, mathematics and literacy education major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Kintzel has been named All-Missouri Valley Conference first team twice. A talented middle blocker, she led Northern Iowa to a 23-8 record while averaging 2.71 kills and 0.95 blocks per set along with a .308 attack percentage. Named to the AVCA all-region first team, she finished her career with 1,128 kills and 446 blocks and a 66-6 record in MVC play.
A health and exercise science major with a 3.73 G.P.A., McLaurin earned All-Big 12 first team honors four years in a row. A native of Midwest City, Okla., McLaurin became the first player to win Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors three consecutive weeks. A two-time AVCA All-American, she ranks 11th in the nation with a .423 attack percentage and 23rd with 1.37 blocks per set. She led the Oklahoma to a 24-8 record and berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2013. She finished her career with 1,351 kills and 558 blocks.
Juniors Emma Deininger of Radford, Ayesha Hein of U.S. Air Force Academy and Annika Foit of LIU Brooklyn join seniors Becca Haraf of Liberty, Elizabeth Koberstein of Marquette and Macy Ubben of Northern Iowa were named to the second team.
The third team is comprised of seniors Courtney Cohen of Troy, Kristen Kelsay of Michigan State, Ali McCurdy of Duke, Brieanna Merriweather of North Carolina State and Chelsea Wintzinger of Auburn. Graduate students Veronica Munkeby of North Dakota and Bailey Webster of Texas round out the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I volleyball third team.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
