TOWSON, Md. – Senior setter Taryn Nash of Spring Hill (Ala.) College leads the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Volleyball Team, a
s selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
An international studies major with a 3.98 G.P.A., Nash (right) has led the Badgers this season to a 37-5 overall record and to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Spring Hill won the Southern States Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 14-0 league mark before also capturing the tournament championship.
A native of Independence, Mo., Nash earned both the SSAC Player and Setter of the Year awards this season as she has been the conference’s setter of the year for the third season in a row. A four-year member of the All-SSAC Team, Nash ranks seventh in the NAIA in assists per set (11.2) and eighth in total assists (1,550).
Nash has compiled 5,413 assists and 1,137 digs during her four-year tenure at Spring Hill. A two-time Tachikara-NAIA All-America honorable mention, she was a 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete and the 2010 SSAC Freshman of the Year.
Nash is one of three players on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Volleyball first team who was on the second team in 2012. Senior Rae Brandes of Indiana Wesleyan University and senior Kelly Cole of Asbury University are returning award winners. Senior Kaitlin Feddema of Trinity Christian College was on last year’s third team.
Seniors Rebecca Brandes of Indiana Wesleyan and junior Aubrey Husak of Bethel (Ind.) College round out the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Volleyball first team.
An athletic training and pre-physical therapy major from Twin Lakes, Wis., Rae Brandes carries a 3.83 G.P.A. The 2013 Crossroads League Player of the Year, Brandes helped Indiana Wesleyan to a share of the conference regular-season title and the league tournament crown. The Wildcats are 29-11 overall and participating in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Brandes ranks 13th in the NAIA in total kills (484) and 37th in kills per game (3.59). The outside hitter also has 45 total blocks.
Brandes’ twin sister Rebecca is a senior elementary education major with a 3.90 G.P.A. Also from Twin Lakes, Wis., Brandes is the libero for Indiana Wesleyan and ranks sixth in the NAIA in total digs (766) and eighth in digs per set (5.67). Like her sister, Brandes was a first team All-Crossroads League selection while also being named the Crossroads League Libero of the Year.
An elementary education major from Lexington, Ky., Cole sports the lone 4.00 G.P.A. on this year’s first team. Cole helped Asbury go 35-8 overall and win the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season crown with a 10-1 league mark before winning the tournament championship as well. The Eagles also advanced to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. Cole earned All-KIAC second team honors as a libero, and she ranks sixth in the NAIA in digs per set (5.75) and seventh in total digs (759).
A cell and molecular biology major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Husak hails from Mount Vernon, Iowa. The junior middle blocker helped Bethel to a share of the Crossroads League regular-season championship with a 16-2 conference mark. A first team All-Crossroads League selection, Husak helped the Pilots to a 25-12 overall record. She ranks 19th in the NAIA in total kills (472), and Husak also has 83 total blocks, 67 digs and a .276 hitting percentage.
The six members of the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Volleyball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.91.
The Capital One Academic All-America College Division second team is comprised of senior Laura Ackart of Southeastern University, senior Kristen Harms of Trinity Christian, graduate student Dana McGowan of Northwest Christian University, senior Lauren Purdy of Park University, junior Stefani Sorensen of Eastern Oregon University and junior Amy Weststeyn of Biola University.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
