Strategic Branding Review Updates

• The CoSIDA’s Board of Directors agreed last April to hire Cryder Rinebold of Indianapolis to conduct a strategic branding-based review of CoSIDA over the course of the next 12-15 months. On January 15 during the NCAA Convention meetings, the CoSIDA officers/staff were presented a complete report on the strategic review by Cryder Rinebold. CoSIDA President Joe Hornstein (FIU) passed along this full report to the CoSIDA Board of Directors on its conference call on Jan. 24th.

Over the past few weeks CoSIDA’s leadership has reviewed those reports and on Feb. 20th a follow-up conference call was put together with Cryder Rinebold so that Board members could hear directly from Dennis Cryder and JoJo Rinebold with regard to the report and a Q&A session was conducted. Executive summaries are now being put together for the Board’s leadership to communicate to the membership as well as interested external groups. President Joe Hornstein will be providing more information to the membership in the coming weeks.

2013 CoSIDA Orlando Convention Updates

• The 2013 CoSIDA Convention, held in conjunction with the NACDA and Affiliates Convention, takes place June 12-15 at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando.

The Convention webpage has the following information (workshop programming, social activities, Family Committee activities and events, promotions to theme parks, Mears Transportation airport shuttle, golf course discounts, United Airlines flight discounts, registration & hotel reservation links, and FAQ on the convention): www.cosida.com/2013Orlando/

Registration and hotel reservations ($171.00 per night) are now being accepted as of February 1. Deadline is May 10th and we strongly encourage your early attention to this matter if you want to stay at the main convention hotel. If you wait until the last few weeks to make reservations it is quite likely that you will not be able to get a room at the main convention hotel, but rather one of the satellite hotels. As a reminder, per membership input, the convention has been scaled back to one that allows you to arrive late morning/afternoon on June 12th and spend four hotel nights instead of five as has been the case.

To register for the Convention: click HERE
For hotel reservations at the World Center Marriott Resort: click
HERE

PLEASE NOTE: CoSIDA members need to register for the convention and reserve hotel rooms via CoSIDA.com convention site and not via the NACDA.com convention site.

CoSIDA 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union-N.Y.) is coordinating our programming for the 2013 CoSIDA Convention in Orlando along with the Programming Committee. If you have any questions, please contact him at mcdowele@union.edu. Read more about the extensive programming already planned, the social events and the new "Family Committee" activities at the CoSIDA Convention webpage.

• Some key components of the 2013 convention:

• The annual induction ceremony for the Capital One Academic All-America® Hall of Fame will take place at 5 pm on Wednesday, June 12. That will be followed by a “Kickoff/Welcome Reception” in the CoSIDA Exhibit Hall at 6:30 pm
• CoSIDA’s Hall of Fame Luncheon is at noon on Thursday, June 13
• CoSIDA's Special Awards Luncheon is at noon on Friday, June 14
• CoSIDA members will be able to attend a joint social mixer for all CoSIDA and NACDA affiliate attendees in the NACDA Exhibit Hall late afternoon/early evening on Thursday, June 13
• ESPN will host a social event for CoSIDA members at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday evening, June 15

CoSIDA Special Awards Announced; Features Stories To Come For All Recipients

The CoSIDA Special Awards Committee, chaired by Tam Flarup (Wisconsin), has completed the selection process for 2013 honors. You can read about this year’s Special Award recipients HERE.
In March, the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Hall of Fame class and the Dick Enberg Award recipient will be announced. All award recipients will have a feature story written on their behalf; see that feature schedule.

Continuing Education Sessions

• On Feb. 27th an information conference call on the 2013 CoSIDA convention took place. Coordinated and moderated by 1st VP Shelly Poe (Auburn), the call included NACDA Assistant Executive Director Julie Work, Will Roleson of the CoSIDA staff and CoSIDA 2nd VP Eric McDowell (Union N.Y.) The call can be accessed in an audio playback mode and/or via an ASAP Sports full transcript HERE. The call enabled CoSIDA members to gain information on the upcoming convention and ask questions about Convention matters.

The CoSIDA Board would like to thank NewTek as well as ASAP Sports (CoSIDA’s official instant transcript services provider) and TRZ Sports /Teamline (CoSIDA’s official conference call provider) for their support of CoSIDA’s continuing education initiatives. NewTek produced the fall continuing ed video series (with all videos from 2012 Convention sessions) and those can be viewed on-demand HERE via CoSIDA's YouTube channel.

CoSIDA 3rd Vice President Judy Willson (Mountain West Conference) is coordinating the spring semester conference call/webinar continuing education program from March-May. If you have ideas or want to present on a call/webcast, Judy can be contacted via jwillson@themwc.com.

• In September, CoSIDA launched its Online Reference and Resource Library. You can learn more about this wonderful membership continuing education service and access the database HERE.

CoSIDA Awards/Contests - March 1 deadline for some Publications Contest entries

Nominations and contests are well underway for the 2012-13 academic year. The CoSIDA Fred Stabley Writing Contest nominations closed in February. Here is what remains open:

The 2012-13 Publications Contest opened at the end of January due to a change in committee leadership. The new Publications Committee Chair is Tyler Cundith (Johnson County Community College,
tcundith@jccc.edu). Please click HERE for Publications Contest information, deadlines, entry forms and contest coordinators. There are two deadlines this year - March 1 for all fall sports and basketball-related contests and March 30 for all other winter sports and all spring sports contests.

• The 2012-13 CoSIDA Scholarship Program, chaired by Carol Hudson (Old Dominion,
chudson@odu.edu) will also have an online nomination portal this year and those deadlines are in April and May 2013. See more information HERE.

National Organizational Initiatives

NACDA

• CoSIDA’s staff (John Humenik, Barb Kowal and Will Roleson) met with NACDA staff members and several hotel staff members from the Marriott World Center in Orlando from Feb. 20-22 to review dozens of organizational matters as it relates to the convention this coming June.

• CoSIDA’s leadership continues to contribute a "CoSIDA Corner" published in each issue of NACDA's Athletic Administration Magazine discussing our organization and profession. The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure throughout the full intercollegiate community.

The February 2013 column discussed how CoSIDA has been a leader in social media strategy, education and hands-on continuing education is available for viewing HERE. The column was written by Chris Syme, Chair of the CoSIDA New Media/Technology Committee.

• We strongly encourage all CoSIDA members to review the “Frequently Asked Questions” document in preparation for CoSIDA's Convention (June 12-15) moving to the NACDA & Affiliates Convention in Orlando. Review the current NACDA FAQ document HERE.

NCAA

The NCAA/CoSIDA Media Coordination Advisory Board held its monthly call in mid-February. Among the topics discussed were ideas to increase readership of the monthly newsletter and use of the NCAA's FTP site by SIDs as well as the schedule of championship selection shows, which is available on www.ncaa.com. The group is planning to meet at the CoSIDA Convention in June.  CoSIDA members are reminded that if there are any issues with content on NCAA.com, they can e-mail Turner Sports at ncaa-content@turner.com.

• The NCAA Championships and Alliances staff recently published its fifth monthly NCAA Media Coordination and Statistics Newsletter in February which can be read HERE. The newsletter was developed at the request of – and in conjunction with – the NCAA Championships and Media Coordination Advisory Board, which is comprised of CoSIDA members from all three NCAA divisions along with NCAA staff.

Marketing & Communications Updates

CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, on behalf of the CoSIDA leadership, is coordinating a redesign of the CoSIDA.com website in conjunction with SIDEARM, our website provider. The layout and designs are finalized, and the redesigned site is scheduled to launch in March.

If you have suggestions for CoSIDA.com content or wish to contribute to our website, please send those suggestions to barbkowal@cosida.com.

During the month of February, 12 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were 20 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA organizational umbrella.

In February, 28 articles were posted on CoSIDA.com. The CoSIDA Twitter page had 193 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.

The CoSIDA LinkedIn group continues to attract members and the group now totals 1,759 members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators. Please join and submit your ideas, questions or comments to make this a lively forum for our members.

Capital One Academic All-America® Program

2012-13 Academic All-America® master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements (PDF)

In February, the Capital One Academic All-America® men's and women's basketball Academic All-America® teams were announced. Awards for those student-athletes are currently in production and will be shipped to those CoSIDA members who nominated them in March. Please see the Capital One Academic All-America® webpages for more information and team listings.

CoSIDA's corporate partner Capital One maintains the Capital One Academic All-America® website which was launched in the summer. The website, developed by a Capital One’s partner ad agency Campfire, is: http://www.capitaloneacademicallamerica.com/. There is tremendous historical and current Academic All-America® content already on the site and more is being developed.

• Thanks to the many CoSIDA members who have produced Capital One Academic All-America® videos for student-athletes who have received 2012 fall Capital One AAA honors. Mark Adkins (Manchester College) from the Academic All-America® Committee is coordinating these efforts. You can view these short interviews at the Capital One Academic All-America® YouTube channel.

NOTE: Deadlines for Capital One Academic All-America® nominations and voting are strictly adhered to. In fairness to all who nominate/vote prior to the deadline and for the integrity of the program, there can be no extensions and no exceptions if the deadline is missed. Please plan appropriately now to make sure your information in place to meet the respective deadlines and that the people at your school who will be nominating student-athletes are paid members of CoSIDA for the 2012-13 year.

If you have questions regarding the nomination criteria for the AAA program, or other questions relating to the awards program, please closely review the information page and FAQ document on the CoSIDA website which we believe will address your question.

• The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®"mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and Academic All-America® Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (johnhumenik@cosida.com) or Academic All-America® Committee chair emeritus Dick Lipe (rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.

Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.
