Working with Other National Organizations
NACDA
• CoSIDA’s leadership continues to contribute a "CoSIDA Corner" published in each issue of NACDA's
Athletic Administration Magazine discussing our organization and profession. The NACDA magazine, which is published in October, November, December, February, March, April, June and August, is sent to more than 10,000 university and athletics administrators. That, combined with the exposure that CoSIDA receives via NACDA’s daily email blast, provides CoSIDA incredible exposure throughout the full intercollegiate community.
The
April column, penned by
Larry Happel (Central College) who is the President of D3-SIDA, discussed recent NCAA Division III and communications initiatives involving SIDs.
• We strongly encourage all CoSIDA members to review the “Frequently Asked Questions” document in preparation for CoSIDA's Convention (June 12-15) moving to the NACDA & Affiliates Convention in Orlando. Review the current NACDA FAQ document
HERE.

The staff also published its seventh monthly NCAA Media Coordination and Statistics Newsletter in April. The newsletter was developed at the request of – and in conjunction with – the NCAA Championships and Media Coordination Advisory Board, which is comprised of CoSIDA members from all three NCAA divisions along with NCAA staff.
NAIA

North American Society for Sports Management (NASSM)
• For the first time in our history, CoSIDA will have exposure and presentations at the North American Society for Sport Management Conference. Through the initiatives of
Eric McDowell (Union N.Y.), CoSIDA 2nd Vice President, and his “CoSIDA U” program, a submission entitled “Developing an Application and Introduction of the Collegiate Athletic Communications Industry” was accepted for presentation at the conference on June 1, 2013 in Austin, Texas.
Barb Kowal, CoSIDA’s Director of External Affairs, will visit with Deans and Professors from institutions attending that feature the Sport Management major from more than 400 campuses throughout North America.
The “CoSIDA U” program is designed to educate Sport Management programs about the collegiate sports communications field, its excellent opportunities and rewards for a career, as well as the objective to find and develop the future talent for our profession and organization.
Marketing & Communications Updates
• During the month of April, 22 CoSIDA-based stories appeared on NACDA’s Daily Review email blast. There were
22 Daily Review emails during the month. Through the Daily Review email, thousands of university and athletics administrators are exposed to professional and organizational news. This outreach primarily came about due to CoSIDA’s decision in December 2008 to become an affiliated partner within the NACDA organizational umbrella.
• In April, 44 articles were posted on
CoSIDA.com. The
CoSIDA Twitter page had 228 tweets/postings, all of them of an informative nature with breaking news and timely topics for athletic communication professionals.
• The
CoSIDA LinkedIn group continues to attract members and the group now totals 1,787 members and is actively holding discussions, soliciting final convention panelists and sharing articles and videos of interest to athletic communicators. Please join and submit your ideas, questions or comments to make this a lively forum for our members.
• For the third year in a row, CoSIDA's email marketing and membership engagement efforts have been recognized as one of the best by Constant Contact, the online marketing company which offers email and social media marketing, online surveys and digital storefronts. CoSIDA's email marketing has been recognized with a "
2012 Constant Contact All Star Award," given by that company to only the top 10 percent of the more than 500,000 organizations internationally who use its services. CoSIDA's email efforts are developed and coordinated by
Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal. Some of the criteria for the All Star Award include consistently high open rates (greater than 25%), click through rates, and low bounce rates; using social media share tools; and regulary viewing reports to evaluate how your email efforts are doing.
•
CoSIDA Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal, on behalf of the CoSIDA leadership, is coordinating a redesign of the
CoSIDA.com website in conjunction with SIDEARM, our website provider. The new website will launch in May.

Capital One Academic All-America® Program
2012-13 Academic All-America® master schedule for nomination deadlines/team announcements (PDF)
• In April, nominations and voting for the Capital One Academic All-America® baseball and softball were conducted, as well as at-large sport nominations. Please see the Capital One Academic All-America® webpages for more information and team listings. Nominations for track and field/cross country began on April 30.
•
CoSIDA's corporate partner Capital One maintains the Capital One Academic All-America® website which was launched in the summer. The website, developed by a Capital One’s partner ad agency Campfire, is:
http://www.capitaloneacademicallamerica.com/. There is tremendous historical and current Academic All-America® content already on the site and more is being developed.
• Thanks to the many CoSIDA members who have produced Capital One Academic All-America® videos for student-athletes who have received 2012 fall sports and basketball Capital One AAA honors.
Mark Adkins (Manchester College) from the Academic All-America® Committee is coordinating these efforts. You can view these short interviews at the
Capital One Academic All-America® YouTube channel.
•
NOTE: Deadlines for Capital One Academic All-America® nominations and voting are strictly adhered to. In fairness to all who nominate/vote prior to the deadline and for the integrity of the program, there can be no extensions and no exceptions if the deadline is missed. Please plan appropriately now to make sure your information in place to meet the respective deadlines and that the people at your school who will be nominating student-athletes are paid members of CoSIDA for the 2012-13 year.
If you have questions regarding the nomination criteria for the AAA program, or other questions relating to the awards program, please closely review the
information page and FAQ document on the CoSIDA website which we believe will address your question.
• The Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®" mark is federally registered.
As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and Academic All-America® Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact
CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (
johnhumenik@cosida.com) or
Academic All-America® Committee chair emeritus Dick Lipe (
rlipe@bentley.edu). We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark.
Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc.
We remind CoSIDA members to be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's Capital One partnership program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach’s associations or other organizations and change it to “Academic All-America®” instead of its appropriate title given by that awarding organization.
