Division II athletic communications members asked to participate in Membership Census

Your voice counts! The NCAA Division II leadership wants to hear from all athletic communicators this summer and is requesting that each athletics staff member complete the 2013 Division II Membership Census, a comprehensive survey designed to assist in shaping the future of Division II.

In mid-July, CoSIDA officers and staff members met with numerous NCAA staff members in Indianapolis, including new
Division II Vice President Terri Steeb Gronau and Josh Looney, NCAA Associate Director of Division II. One major topic was this new D2 initiative where the NCAA is reaching out to D2 divisional members for opinions and input.

Looney (
jlooney@ncaa.org) also addressed 2013 Convention attendees in Orlando and spoke about this survey and the importance of CoSIDA members participating in this far-reaching census.

"From our conversations in Orlando, as well as in Indianapolis, it’s critical that the athletic media relations voice is reflected as the Presidents Council begins to set the division’s strategic direction moving forward into the next five years," noted Looney. "You’ll find questions revolving around marketing, communications and championships that we’re hoping SIDs will be able to help guide us, based on their experiences."

The memorandum to D2 athletic personnel is below.

MEMORANDUM

July 10, 2013

TO: NCAA Division II Institutions Athletics Department Staff

FROM: J. Patrick O’Brien, chair
Division II Presidents Council.
Bob Boerigter, chair
Division II Management Council.

SUBJECT: 2013 Division II Membership Census.

The purpose of this memorandum is to invite you to complete the 2013 Division II Membership Census, a comprehensive survey designed to assist in shaping the future of Division II. Through the census, athletics staff members at each Division II institution will receive an opportunity to express their opinions regarding current and future policies and priorities of the division.

Responses to the census will help Division II governance committees understand the perspectives and preferences of the membership regarding a wide range of topics, including championships, governance and legislative processes, diversity and inclusion, branding and communication, and the NCAA Convention. While the census is not intended as a referendum on these issues, it will serve as a platform for informed, productive committee discussion of Division II issues that impact your campus.

Your response will be kept strictly confidential. Data will be aggregated to an appropriate level when reporting to ensure that your name and your institution’s name cannot be matched to a specific response.

Because the census is so comprehensive, it will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The census must be completed in one session; you cannot close your browser and return where you left off. When you have the time to devote to it, please click the link below to begin taking the survey:

Because we are interested in receiving feedback from as many athletics department staff members as possible, we will also send this link to your senior woman administrator and request that she forward it to other individuals in your athletics department (e.g., other athletics administrators, coaches, etc.). If you receive such a forwarded message, you may click the link in either message to complete the survey. (Note: If you received a memo addressed specifically to athletics directors, please use the link in that memo; it will take you to a version of the survey that includes a few questions specific to athletics directors.)

Thank you for taking the time to complete this important task. We look forward to receiving your feedback.

If you have questions concerning the survey, please contact Gregg Summers, NCAA associate director of research for Division II and data management, at (317) 917-6521 or gsummers@ncaa.org.
