Responses came in from 47 states and provinces, representing all levels of CoSIDA membership and illustrating a widespread desire for better access, organization and sales of imagery. Here are a few trends we found:
-
Manageable delivery channels are required: 60% rely on athletic department staff or local freelancers for photos, but 35% use five or more image sources
-
Storage space is key: 76% have image collections in excess of 250GB with 40% over 1TB
-
Archives are fragmented: 75% rely on an in-house collection of CDs, DVDs and hard drives to store their imagery
-
Search capabilities are limited: 84% use file names as a primary search method, with keywords a distant second at 13%
-
Access can be an issue: 70% must be in their office or on the local network to reach their archive
-
Image sales could be better: 57% say sales need an overhaul (or don’t exist) and 35% of those would sell photos under an NCAA-compliant model
