Clarion University of Pennsylvania senior setter Laura Subject leads the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
           
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
 
An athletic training major with a 3.93 G.P.A., Subject is the winner of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II volleyball.
 
Subject is the second consecutive Clarion student-athlete to earn the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II volleyball. In 2013, Golden Eagle hitter Hannah Heeter earned the honor for 2013.
 
The Daktronics Atlantic Region Player of the Year, Subject is a first team AVCA All-Atlantic Region selection and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. The Novi, Michigan, native finished the season ranked second in the PSAC and 20th in the country in set assists per set with 11.27, while also adding 0.39 service aces per set, the 12th-best mark in the PSAC.
 
A three-time All-PSAC West performer, Subject finished her career third in school history with 4,065 set assists, seventh with 163 aces and 16th with 1,005 digs. Her 1,426 set assists during the 2013 season rank fourth in school history, while her 1,341 this year are the ninth most in a season at Clarion.
 
Subject and her teammates helped the Golden Eagles post a 30-5 overall record on the season, including a 20-2 slate in the PSAC West. Clarion won its second consecutive PSAC West title and its third PSAC West title since 2010. The Golden Eagles also earned their sixth consecutive NCAA Division II playoff berth and their 11th in the past 13 years.
 
Twelve of the 18 members of the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with five student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 18 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team members have an average GPA of 3.90.
 
The Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team features four returning Academic All-America® picks with two each on the first and second teams. Senior Julia Ashen of California State University Monterey Bay and senior Laurel Miller of California University of Pennsylvania (teammate of Subject's) find a spot on the first team. Ashen is two-time first team Academic All-America®, while Miller moves up from the 2013 third team.
 
Ashen is a human communication major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. She was named honorable mention All- California Collegiate Athletic Association this year. Ashen was 19th in the conference in kills per set. Her 259 kills were second on Monterey Bay’s 2014 season list. Ashen completes her CSUMB career with 1,278 kills, good for number two on the school’s all-time list.
 
Miller is a computer science major with a 3.84 G.P.A. She is a two-time All-Atlantic Region selection and a two-year starter for the Vulcans. Miller led the PSAC with 476 kills and finished third in the league with 3.50 kills per set. She ranked second on the team and set a career high with 432 digs behind 21 kill/dig double-doubles. Miller led the team and finished seventh in the league with 52 service aces. She led NCAA Division II this season with 1,536 total attacks.
 
Senior Meagan Burke from NCAA Division II national champion University of Tampa and senior Chelsea Brothers from Kentucky Wesleyan College earned Capital One Academic All-America® recognition for the second straight year. Brothers was a second team member in 2013, while Burke earns a promotion from her 2013 third team distinction.
 
Burke holds a 3.53 G.P.A. with an allied health/medical science major. On the court, the senior middle blocker is a 2014 Daktronics® first team All-American selection. Burke is a three-time AVCA All-South Region selection and a two-time All-American. She entered the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship as the national leader in attack percentage (.439). A two-sport standout for the Spartans, she is also a Capital One Academic All-America® in softball.
 
A senior middle grades education major with an emphasis in mathematics and special education, Brothers has a perfect 4.00 cumulative G.P.A. She was an Academic All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference selection in 2013 and an Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree in 2011 and 2012. Brothers led the 2014 Panthers in total blocks (74), solo blocks (11) and block assists (63) and finished second on the KWC charts in kills (203).
 
Nine of the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II volleyball team members represent squads which qualified for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship. National champion Tampa has three student-athletes on the 2014 Academic All-America® teams with one selection each on the first, second and third teams.
 
In addition to Subject, Ashen and Miller, the first team includes senior teammates Sarah Faubel and Erica Rottinghaus from Missouri Western State University and junior Berkley Whaley of Tampa. Last week, Whaley was named the 2014 AVCA NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. In addition to Burke and Brothers, the six-member Capital One Academic All-America® second team includes seniors Caitlin Brenton (University of California, San Diego) and Makenzie Frodle (Saginaw Valley State University), graduate student Summer Kremer of King (Tenn.) University and junior Danielle Dowd (Ferris State University).
 
The six-member Capital One Academic All-America® third team includes four student-athletes whose teams played in the NCAA tournament: seniors Shannon Gillespie of Anderson (S.C.) University, Gina Morgan of Regis University, Kahley Patrick (Tampa) and Ying Shen (University of Bridgeport). Rounding out the third team are senior Elayni Stokes (Newberry College) and junior Amy Edwards of Lubbock Christian University.
