Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Basketball Teams Announced

Brad Karp (Saint Xavier), Samantha Kleinsasser (Northwestern- Iowa) claim Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year basketball honors for the college division. Karp has now earned top CD men's basketball honors for the second consecutive year.

TOWSON, Md. – Senior guard Brad Karp of Saint Xavier University and senior forward Samantha Kleinsasser of Northwestern (Iowa) College headline the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s and  Women’s Basketball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
The Capital One College Division Academic All-America® basketball teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
 
Karp and Kleinsasser have been selected as the winners of the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, respectively.
 
A senior biology major from Valparaiso, Ind., Karp carries a 3.56 G.P.A. This is the second year in a row he received the men’s basketball Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award, and this is the third year in a row he made the team. In 2012, Karp made the second team before making the first team the past two seasons.
 
Karp is currently ranked fifth in NAIA Division II in points per game with 26.5 and is third in total steals (69) and fourth in total points (688). He also averages 8.2 rebounds per contest in helping Saint Xavier to a 23-4 record and a No. 5 ranking.  A 2012-13 NAIA All-America second team member, Karp has been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week six times this season. For his career, he currently has 2,716 points and 988 rebounds.
 
Kleinsasser, a nursing major from Huron, S.D., has maintained a 4.00 G.P.A. Northwestern’s leader in rebounding (7.4 per game) and blocked shots (1.64 a contest), Kleinsasser has spearheaded the Red Raiders to a 22-3 record, the No. 3 ranking in NAIA Division II and a tie for second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
 
Among NAIA Division II, Kleinsasser checks in at 25th in blocked shots (41) and blocks per game and 31st in field-goal percentage (51.9 percent) and free-throw percentage (82.2 percent) in the NAIA Division II national leaders through Feb. 12. She ranks fifth in the GPAC at 16.2 points per game and second in the league in field-goal percentage and blocks per game.
 
Kleinsasser garnered several awards in 2012-13. She became a second-team Capital One Academic All-America® choice, honorable-mention Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-American, second-team all-GPAC, an NAIA Scholar-Athlete award winner and the NAIA’s Emil S. Liston Award winner. The Liston Award recognizes one male and one female basketball player based on scholarship, character and playing ability. In her career, Kleinsasser has compiled 1,258 points, 667 rebounds and 120 blocks.
 
 
Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Basketball College Division Team

 
Joining Karp on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s Basketball first team are Michael Greene of Northwest (Wash.) University, Trevor Johnson of Nebraska Wesleyan University, Nick Reed of Doane (Neb.) College, and Danny Rudeen of Morningside (Iowa) College.
 
Like Karp, Greene and Reed have been named to the Academic All-America® for the third time in a row. Green is a repeat first-team selection from last season and was named to the second team in 2011-12. Reed landed on last year’s second team after appearing on the third team in 2011-12. Johnson made the third team in 2012-13 while Rudeen was named to the third team in 2011-12.
 
A graduate student from Bellingham, Wash., Greene carries a 3.90 G.P.A. and is seeking his master’s in business administration. Greene leads Northwest in scoring with a 17.2 point-per-game average and ranks sixth in NAIA Division II in field-goal percentage (62.6%). An honorable mention on the 2012-13 NAIA All-American team, Greene has helped Northwest to a 17-8 record this season. For his career, he has 1,529 points and 764 rebounds.
 
Johnson is a senior biology major from Lincoln, Neb., and owns a 3.95 G.P.A. Leading the team in scoring and rebounding, Johnson has helped Nebraska Wesleyan to a 13-9 overall record. Currently, he is averaging 17.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. An All-GPAC honorable mention in 2012-13, Johnson ranks third in NAIA Division II in field-goal percentage at 64.3 percent. For his career, he has scored 1,018 points and grabbed 421 rebounds.
 
A senior exercise science major from Syracuse, Neb., Reed boasts a 3.71 G.P.A. Not only is he Doane’s leading scorer, but Reed is currently pacing the GPAC with a 22.2 scoring average. His 578 total points ranks him 11th in NAIA Division II. A 2012-13 All-GPAC first team member, Reed has 1,965 career points and 698 career rebounds. He also was a NAIA All-American honorable mention. Doane is currently 13-13 on the year.
 
A senior from Sioux City, Iowa, Rudeen is computer science major and carries a 3.74 G.P.A. Like Reed, Rudeen was both an All-GPAC first team member and a NAIA All-American honorable mention last season. Rudeen leads the 19-8 Mustangs with a 20.3 scoring average. One of the top shooters in the NAIA, he ranks fourth in Division II in free-throw shooting with an 88.6 percentage and eighth in 3-point shooting at 47.0 percent. For his career, Rudeen has tallied 1,804 career points and 493 career rebounds.
 
The combined G.P.A. of the men’s first team is 3.77.
 
Making up the second team are Derek Dickerson of San Diego Christian College, Greg Miller of Grace College, Zach Miller of Bethel (Ind.) College, Andre Murillo of Biola University and Bobby Naubert of Madonna University. Both Greg Miller and Naubert were named to the second team a year ago, while Zach Miller was named to the third team.
 
Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s Basketball College Division Team
 

The Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s Basketball first team consists of Kleinsasser, junior guard-forward Suzie Broski of Saint Xavier, senior forward Jenna Diakos of Louisiana State University-Shreveport, junior guard Rachel Melcher of Madonna and Broski’s Saint Xavier teammate, junior guard-forward Morgan Stuut.
 
Broski, a junior Rockford, Ill., product, sports a 4.00 G.P.A. while pursuing a biology/pre-health degree. She ranks 19th in NAIA Division II and second in the CCAC with a 53.8 percent field-goal percentage. Broski produces 14.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game. Broski has aided Saint Xavier to a No. 6 national ranking, 23-4 ledger and a tie for the CCAC lead at 13-2 in league play. As a sophomore, she took second-team Capital One Academic All-America® acclaim, second-team all-conference honors and set single-season school records for minutes played and minutes per game.
 
A senior community health/pre-physical therapy major from Ragley, La., Diakos boasts of a 4.00 G.P.A. Diakos leads the Red River Athletic Conference and ranks 14th in NAIA Division I in field-goal percentage at 53.2 percent. The three-time all-conference performer is averaging 13.5 points and 6.8 rebounds a game. Diakos became LSU-Shreveport’s all-time leading scorer (1,399 points) and rebounder (757) this season. The Lady Pilots are third in the RRAC with a 16-6 record, 8-3 in conference play.

Melcher, a junior biology major from Sterling Heights, Mich., has posted a 3.96 G.P.A. Melcher leads Madonna in scoring (15.7 points a game), rebounding (8.6), assists (3.7 a contest) and steals (1.77). She recently passed the 1,000-point and 500-rebound marks with 1,002 points and 504 rebounds. The Wolverine-Hoosier Conference honored her as its player of the week once this season. Melcher was an NAIA scholar-athlete, academic all-conference and honorable-mention all-conference selection.
 
A junior nursing major from Marcellus, Mich, Stuut has compiled a 3.87 G.P.A. Stuut’s 20.9 points, 13.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.37 steals a game lead Saint Xavier in every category. She tops NAIA Division II with 353 rebounds and 9.2 defensive rebounds a contest while ranking second nationally in rebounding. She has been chosen league player of the week six times this season. In 2012-13, Stuut became a WBCA Player of the Year finalist, first-team All-American, CCAC Player of the Year, a first-team all-conference pick and four-time CCAC player of the week. She was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® third team last season. She is a two-time All-American and first-team all-conference player.
 
The five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s Basketball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.97.
 
Senior Taylor Belmont of Vanguard University, junior Katie Gonnering of the University of St. Francis (Ill.), junior Vanessa Kresin of Kansas Wesleyan University, senior Katresa Savisky of Point Park University, and senior Kourtney Shirley of Johnson & Wales (Colo.) University comprise the second team. Gonnering repeated as a Capital One Academic All-America® selection after making the first team in 2013.
