AUSTIN, Texas –  Senior Avery Acker of Southern Methodist University headlines the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
Acker has been selected as the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-American® of the Year for Division I Volleyball. An accounting and pre-med major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Acker also was a second-team Academic All-American® choice last year.
 
The Poth, Texas native was the driving force behind SMU winning a school record 27 games this season, the American Athletic Conference Championship and advancing to the NCAA Volleyball Championships for the first time in program history.
 
Acker, who was named the Player of the Year in The American Athletic Conference, finished the regular season with an NCAA-best 12.53 assists per set, and set a conference record with 67 assists in a five-set win against TCU, earning American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player of the Week accolades. The senior became the third player in SMU history with 4,000 career assists, and ranks second all-time with 4,280.
 
Thirteen of the 18 members of the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with five student-athletes carrying a perfect 4.0 G.P.A.  The six members of the first-team have an average G.P.A. of 3.90.
 
Senior Sierra Wilson of Alabama is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball first team selection.  She earned first team honors in 2014 as well.  A native of Anaheim, Calif., Wilson is an English and political science double major.  She is one of two members of the first team with a 4.00 G.P.A.  Wilson set the all-time record for career assists at Alabama this season.  She was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American last season.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball first team also includes Emma Roberson of Cincinnati, a communication major who also carries a 4.0 G.P.A. Rounding out the first team are Morgan Bergren of Kentucky, Amy Boswell of Brigham Young and Paige Neuenfeldt of North Carolina.
 
Second team member Jordan Burgess of Stanford is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball selection, having earned second team honors in 2014 as well. She is joined on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball second team by Kate George of Louisville, Tressa Lyman of Idaho State, Paige Tapp of Minnesota, Teegan Van Gunst (Georgia Tech) and Haleigh Washington (Penn State).
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball third team includes four student-athletes with at least a 4.0 G.P.A.  Senior Lauren Clarke of North Dakota carries a 4.0 G.P.A. as a chemical engineering major; senior Allison Doerpinghaus of Houston Baptist is a kinesiology major with a 4.0 G.P.A.; junior Leah Mikesky of Rice is a kinesiology major with a 4.11 G.P.A. and junior Kayla Ostrom (Lipscomb) is a food systems management major who carries a 4.0 G.P.A. Aubrey Edie (Ole Miss) and Ashley Evans (Purdue) join the quartet on the third team.
 
Nine of the 18 student-athletes represent teams that qualified for the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championships this season – Acker of SMU, Bergren of Kentucky, Amy Boswell of BYU, Neuenfeldt of North Carolina, Burgess of Stanford, Tapp of Minnesota, Washington of Penn State, Evans of Purdue and Ostrom of Lipscomb. The Nittany Lions, the Gophers and the Cougars all advanced to the quarterfinal round that begins Friday, Dec. 11.
