AUSTIN, Texas – A pair of senior goalkeepers headline the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
Jesper Malmstrom of LIU Post has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II men’s soccer, while Maylyn Parsons of Columbus State University won the award for women’s soccer.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
 
A finance major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Malmstrom has led LIU Post to an 18-1-1 record and the number one ranking in Division II. The Pioneers were the top seed in the East Region and defeated Merrimack College 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA regional. They fell to Adelphi University  in the regional final, snapping a streak of three consecutive regional titles.
 
A native of Linkopping, Sweden, Malmstrom owns a 16-0-1 record in 17 starts in goal. He ranks first in the East Coast Conference and third in Division II with a 0.45 goals-against average, and is also first in the conference and fifth nationally with eight shutouts. He has allowed just seven goals and has a .844 save percentage.
 
After being named the 2015 ECC Goalkeeper of the Year, he earned All-ECC honors for the second straight year with a second-team selection in 2016. A year ago, Malmstrom was an All-ECC first team selection and earned NSCAA All-East Region second team accolades. He was also chosen the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and was a first team ECAC All-Star. He posted a 13-3-3 record with six shutouts and ranked 43rd in Division II with 1.04 GAA.
 
Malmstrom played one season at Lindsey Wilson College before transferring to LIU Post. In 2014, he compiled a 15-4-2 record with eight shutouts, with a 0.86 GAA. He led the ECC in wins, shutouts, and goals against average.
 
Parsons is a senior from Greenville, South Carolina, who was a first team CoSIDA Academic All-America® a year ago, as well. She has a 4.00 G.P.A. and is an engineering studies major. Like Malmstrom, she has led fifth-ranked Columbus State to the region final. The top-seeded Lady Cougars defeated the University of West Florida 2-1 in the quarterfinals to set up a Dec. 1 semifinal meeting with Grand Valley State University in Kansas City, Missouri.  It will be a rematch of last season’s national championship that Grand Valley State won. Columbus State is riding a 16-match winning streak.
 
Columbus State has a 21-2-0 record, with Parsons starting all 23 matches. She leads the Peach Belt Conference with a 0.69 goals-against average, and ranks third in the conference in save percentage (.833). The Lady Cougars won their third straight PBC title. She set the school and conference records for career shutouts with 28.
 
Parsons was an All-PBC first team selection, and is now a three-time All-PBC choice. In addition, she captured the Peach Belt Conference Elite 15 Award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average.
 
In 2015, Parsons was a first team CoSIDA Academic All-America® while leading Columbus State to a 21-3-1 record as CSU advanced to the national final. She led the PBC in wins and minutes played and was second in with a 0.81 GAA. In addition to All-PBC first team honors, she was a D2CCA All-Southeast Region first team and NSCAA All-Southeast Region second team selection.
 
As a sophomore in 2014, Parsons helped Columbus State finish with a 19-1-1 record, setting a school record with 12 shutouts. She led the conference in shutouts, GAA (0.52), and save percentage (.857) while earning first team All-PBC, NSCAA All-Southeast Region, and Daktronics All-Southeast Region accolades.
 
CoSIDA Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division II Team
 
Thirteen of the 33 members of the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® NCAA Division II men’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with four student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.91.
 
Bloomsburg University’s Josh Smith and Queens University of Charlotte’s Corey Brown lead a contingent of seven repeat performers from last year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® team.
 
A senior defender from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Smith is an exercise science major with a 3.99 GPA. He started all 17 matches for the Huskies, and all told, started 71 of his 75 career matches.
 
Brown is a senior forward from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has a 3.96 GPA as a biochemistry (pre-med) major. A starter in all 15 matches for the Royals, he finished as the team’s second-leading scorer with three goals and nine assists for 15 points. He earned second team All-South Atlantic Conference honors while ranking third in the SAC in assists. He was a first team All-SAC choice in 2015 when he had nine goals and 11 assists.
 
Limestone College’s Gui Machado moved up from the second team to a spot on this year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team. A senior forward from São Paulo, Brazil, Machado is a marketing, management, sport management major with a 3.83 GPA. The Saints ended the year with a 16-4-0 record after losing to Wingate University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
Machado earned All-Conference Carolinas first team honors for the second straight year after finishing with 18 goals and two assists for 38 points. He is the first Limestone player in 10 years to record at least 17 goals in a season, and ranks among the top 10 in Division II in goals scored. In 2015, he was named the Conference Carolinas Scholar Athlete of the Year while earning NSCAA second team All-Southeast Region, CCA first team All-Southeast Region, and first team All-Conference Carolinas honors.
 
Machado wrapped up his career tied for the program's all-time lead in game-winning goals while finishing third with 37 goals and sixth with 83 points.
 
Kevin Leib of St. Edward’s University is the lone three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® on this year’s team. A first team selection in 2014, the goalkeeper from Dallas, Texas was a second team pick the last two years. Leib is a graduate student with a 3.72 GPA as an accounting major.
 
The Hilltoppers are ranked seventh in Division II with an 18-2-1 record and will face Midwestern State University in the South Central Regional Championship. Leib has started all 21 games in goal, showing a 0.33 GAA, allowing just seven goals while posting an NCAA Division II-leading 15 shutouts. He also ranks first in the country in GAA.
 
Leib was a first team All-Heartland Conference selection for the third straight year, and was a D2CCA second team All-American in 2015 and the 2015 D2CCCA South Central Player of the Year.
 
Three other players on the second team earned CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors a year ago. The Seattle Pacific University tandem of Davis Karaica and Jordan Kollars were second team selections in 2015, while Jonathan Spicher of Tusculum College moved up from the third team.
 
Karaica is a senior defender from Snoqualmie, Washington. An exercise science major, he has a 3.74 GPA. He is a two-time All-American who earned All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors for the third time this year after being named to the first team. He participated in 30 shutouts while starting all 73 matches in his career.
 
Kollars is an engineering major with a 3.88 GPA. He played the midfield for the Falcons, finishing as an honorable mention All-GNAC choice for the second straight year. He played in and started 14 matches, finishing with a goal and a team-high six assists.
 
Spicher led Tusculum to a 16-4-0 record, with the Pioneers reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. He was the first recipient of the SAC’s Elite 18 Award for men’s soccer. He finished with a goal and an assist while starting 19 matches. Spicher is a senior forward from Cologne, Germany, and is an accounting major with a 4.00 GPA.
 
The rest of the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team includes Nestor Aguilar of Limestone, Gianluca Bottoni of Rockhurst University, Evan Garrad and Joe Rund of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Hawaii Pacific University’s Erik Kemsies, Joe Smith of Seton Hill University, and Ovan Oakley of Concordia (N.Y.) College.  
 
The 11-member second team includes Nico Andrade of Maryville (Mo.) University, Dixie State University’s Bryan Baugh, Graham Bobo of Mississippi College, Jens Demul of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Mercyhurst University’s Thom Derks, Guillermo Lazcano of Tusculum, and Sam Palano of the University of California, San Diego.
 
The third team is comprised of Josh Belfrage of Metropolitan State University of Denver, Barry University’s Thomas Coombes, Merrimack’s Jaime Cortes Torres, Damian Gaona of Wingate, LIU Post’s Harry Pearse, Alejandro Penzini of Adelphi, Lukas Grosse-Puppendahl of Davis & Elkins College, Young Harris College’s Ramin Varnhorn, Matt Volk of Rollins College, Brandon Watson of Simon Fraser University, and Harding University’s Phillip White.
 
CoSIDA Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Division II Team

Twenty-one of the 33 members of the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® NCAA Division II women’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with 11 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.90.
 
Parsons is one of seven members of the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-American® team to repeat in 2016.  All earned a spot on the first team. She is also one of three to repeat as first team members, joined by Clare Carlson of Grand Valley State and Clayton State University’s Maria Marti Bartis.
 
Carlson is a senior defender from Ada, Michigan, who was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. She has helped the second-ranked Lakers to a 22-1-1 record and a spot in the semifinals Dec. 1 against Columbus State as the Lakers look for their fourth consecutive NCAA Division II title. Grand Valley State defeated Columbus State in last year’s title match 2-0. She has a 3.94 G.P.A. as a biomedical sciences major.
 
She has led Grand Valley State to one of the best defensive marks in school history, as the Lakers have allowed just six goals and registered 19 shutouts in 24 games. She has added five goals and five assist for 15 points.
 
Carlson has been a part of two NCAA Division II national championship teams, as a freshman and sophomore. A year ago, she was named an NSCAA All-American in addition to the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year. She was also named to the D2CCA All-Midwest Region first team and NSCAA All-Midwest Region first team.
 
Marti Bartis is a graduate student from Girona, Spain with a 4.00 G.P.A. as a health administration major. She helped Clayton State finish with a 9-7-1 record while playing in the midfield. She finished the season with 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points and finished her career with 37 goals, 18 assists and 92 points in three seasons. She is third all-time in program history in goals scored and points, and this year became the first Laker soccer player, men's or women's, to score double-digit goals in three consecutive seasons.
 
She was named the PBC Player of the Year and was a first team All-PBC selection. She is a three-time All-PBC pick and a two-time D2CCA All-Southeast Region pick. In 2014, she was a Daktronics second team All-American.
 
Four players made the move from the third team to the first team CoSIDA Academic All-American® team. Courtney Kozak of Ohio Dominican University and Tusculum’s Carlie Thornber earned spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® team as defenders.
 
Kozak is a senior from Millersburg, Ohio, and has a 4.00 G.P.A. as an accounting/finance major.  She helped the Panthers finish with a 7-7-5 record while playing in 18 matches, with 17 starts. She finished her career playing in 66 matches, starting 60.
 
Thornber has a 4.00 G.P.A. as a pre-medicine major. The junior is from Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. She was a first team All-SAC selection while helping the Pioneers to a 10-5-3 record.  She started 15 matches, scoring three goals, all game-winners. She is a three-year starter who scored eight goals in 53 matches.
 
Wingate’s Kaitlyn Brunworth moved up to the first team as a midfielder. She has a 4.00 G.P.A. as a biology major. The native of Littleton, Colorado, helped the Bulldogs to a 12-6-1 record, reaching the SAC championship game before losing to Carson-Newman University. She played in all 19 matches, finishing with three goals and three assists for nine points.
 
The senior earned All-SAC honors for the fourth straight year, and was a first team selection for the third straight season. A year ago, she was a second team NSCAA All-American. Brunworth was the recipient of the 2016 SAC Elite 18 award for women's soccer. She led Wingate to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
 
The final repeat performer on the CoSIDA Academic All-American® team is Sarah Stram of Bemidji State University. The senior forward is a chemistry major with a 3.90 G.P.A. A native of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, she helped the Beavers finish with a 14-5-1 record, reaching the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament for the eighth consecutive season.
 
Stram recently became the first Bemidji State player to be named to the All-NSIC first team in three consecutive seasons. She finished with five goals while setting a school record with 12 assists, good for 22 points. That was second on the team.
 
In 77 matches, Stram had 34 goals, which ranks second all-time, including a program record 15 game-winners, and owns BSU’s all-time assist record with 29, for a total of 97 points. That figure is also second all-time.
 
Missouri University of Science and Technology’s Anna Fink was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team after being a third team selection in 2014.
 
The senior defender started every game but one this season, scoring a goal and assisting on two others for a total of four points. She helped the Miners post two shutouts and held four other opponents to just one goal. The senior from Fulton, Missouri, has a 4.00 G.P.A. in the classroom as a chemical engineering major.
 
The rest of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team includes Nicole Corcione of Columbus State, Sara Helgadottir of West Florida, and Grand Valley State’s Gabriella Mencotti.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® second team includes UC San Diego’s Kiera Bocchino, Anna Bondy of Northern State University, Megan Block of Rollins, Jessica Brown of Ashland University, Jules Herrity of Carson-Newman, Truman State University’s Katie Mattingly, Dixie State’s Darian McCloy, East Stroudsburg University’s Andrea Polanco, West Florida’s Emily Vogler, Kristin Wolff of Rockhurst University, and University of Bridgeport’s Nicola Worthington.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® third team features Elise Aylward of Western Washington University, Rollins’s Samantha Collin, Lindsey Dias of California State University, Chico, Lewis University’s Mackenzie Fuller, Taylor Gersch of Saint Martin’s University, East Stroudsburg’s Hannah Gombos, Kate O’Gara of Lubbock Christian University, Pace University’s Drew Ribadeneyra, Deanna Rudasill of East Central University, Southern Connecticut State University’s Caroline Staudle, and Jordan Woodruff of Northeastern State University.
