AUSTIN, Texas - University of Delaware graduate student midfielder Ben Sampson and Louisiana Tech University senior forward Kathryn Sloan highlight the 2016 Academic All-America® Division I men’s and women’s soccer teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
Sampson has been named the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I Men’s Soccer, while Sloan earned the distinction of 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I Women’s Soccer.
 
A now three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® selection, Sampson has climbed the ladder each year, earning second team honors in 2015 and third team honors in 2014. The Woodbury, Minnesota native carries a 3.98 G.P.A. while pursuing a Master’s degree in electrical engineering after graduating this past spring summa cum laude with a Bachelor of electrical engineering. Sampson, the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has scored a career-high four goals this season for Delaware. 
 
The two-year captain for the Blue Hens was named the CAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week earlier this year. A two-time CAA All-Academic Team selection and a four-time CAA Academic Honor Roll honoree, Sampson has registered 10 goals and four assists in a school-record 84 career games for Delaware.
 
A communication arts and design major, Sloan carries a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. to earn her second CoSIDA Academic All-America® selection. She was also a 2015 third team selection. Sloan, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, holds the career marks for Louisiana Tech in goals (36) and points (89), and is fourth with 17 assists. This season, she led the Lady Techsters with 24 points, scoring nine goals and adding six assists.
 
Earlier this season, Sloan became the first Louisiana Tech player to be named a First Team All-Conference USA selection, while also earning second team honors in 2014 and 2015. She is a three-time Conference USA All-Academic First Team and is a recipient of the Commissioner's Academic Medal. As a sophomore, Sloan was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women's Soccer Collegiate Player of the Year and was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Central Region Third Team pick.
 
CoSIDA Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I Team
 
Sixteen of the 33 members of the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I men’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with five student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.85.
 
Of the 11 first team selection, nine are returning CoSIDA Academic All-America® members. In addition to Sampson, fellow midfielder Mark Moulton, a senior from Omaha, was a second team selection last year. Senior forward Pat Flynn from Bowling Green State University becomes a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® honoree, having been named to the first team in 2015 and second team in 2014. Flynn’s teammate and fellow forward, senior Joe Sullivan, was a second team selection last year.
 
 
All four defenders are repeat selections, led by West Virginia University senior Jack Elliott who becomes a three-time honoree after a second team selection in 2015 and third team in 2014. Radford University junior Fraser Colmer was named to the second team in 2015, while UCLA senior Michael Amick and University of North Carolina junior David October were selected the third team last season. Stanford University junior goalkeeper Andrew Epstein was on the third team a season ago.
 
Senior midfielder Danny Deakin from the University of South Carolina and University of New Mexico senior forward Niko Hansen round out the first team.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® second team features two student-athletes with perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s and another who is a repeat Academic All-America® second team selection. Sophomores Callum Montgomery, a defender from the University of Charlotte, and midfielder Julius Duchscherer from North Carolina State University, each maintain a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. Graduate student goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland from the University of Louisville earns his second consecutive Academic All-America® second team honor. The three remaining defenders include Michigan State University junior Brad Centala, Saint Francis University (PA) senior Francis de Vries and senior Sam Summerlin from George Washington University. University of Denver senior Sam Hamilton and Utah Valley University junior Paul Hoffmeister made up the rest of the midfielder selections. Forward’s Chris Arling, a University of New Hampshire sophomore, senior Stephen Chapman from Appalachian State University and Drake University senior James Wypych round out the second team.
 
A pair of student-athletes on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® third team carry a 4.0 G.P.A. in Syracuse University sophomore goalie Hendrik Hilpert and Bradley University junior defender Clark Emerson. Rounding out the defenders are Princeton University senior Patrick Barba, University of North Carolina sophomore Alex Comsia and University of Wisconsin sophomore Sam Brotherton. The midfielder selections consist of senior Chris Wingate from the University of New Hampshire, University of Akron senior Adam Najem and senior Andrew Herr from Michigan State University. The forward position rounds out the third team selections with American University junior Garrett Muzikowski, senior Milan Kovacs from the University of North Florida and University of North Carolina sophomore Nils Bruening.
 
CoSIDA Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Division I Team
 
Twenty-three of the 33 members of the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with 13 student-athletes having a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.90.
 
Joining Sloan on the first team as returning CoSIDA Academic All-America® selections are a pair of defenders and a forward. Abilene Christian University senior defender Kelsie Roberts, a third team selection last year, Clemson University senior defender Emily Byorth, a second team pick a season ago, along with University of Florida senior forward Savannah Jordan, a second team honoree in 2015.
 
In addition to Sloan and Roberts, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team includes four student-athletes with perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s, in University of Connecticut senior goalkeeper Emily Armstrong and Northwestern University graduate student Nandi Mehta, a midfielder. University of South Carolina senior Chelsea Drennan and University of Nebraska senior Caroline Flynn make up the midfielders. The two remaining defenders are senior Rashida Beal from the University of Minnesota and senior Paige Bendell from the University of South Carolina. The final member of the first team is Bucknell University junior forward Kendall Ham.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® second team is comprised of five student-athletes with perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s, while all three midfielders and a defender are returning Academic All-America® members. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Watson of Texas Tech University, senior defenders Katie Connolly from the University of Hartford and Central Michigan University’s Christen Chiesa, University of Florida senior midfielder Betsy Middleton, and senior Clemson University forward Jenna Weston each has a 4.0 G.P.A. Middleton was a second team member last year, Auburn University senior Casie Ramsier was a first team selection in 2015 and United States Naval Academy junior Meghan Hegarty was a third team honoree a year ago. West Virginia University defender Carly Black is also a repeat selection having earned second team honors in 2014. Rounding out the forward position are Ohio State University senior Lindsay Agnew and Oklahoma State University senior Courtney Dike. The final defender on the second team is Duke University senior Christina Gibbons.
 
There are four student-athletes on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® third team with a 4.0 G.P.A., while Boston College graduate student forward McKenzie Meehan earns her second Academic All-America® honor after a first team selection in 2015. Those student-athletes with a 4.0 G.P.A. on the third team include junior goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel of Ball State University, West Virginia University sophomore defender Bianca St. Georges, along with a pair of midfielders in senior Bettina Brulhart from McNeese State University and Vanderbilt University senior Kacy Scarpa. The other third team defenders include senior Nicole Bates from Fordham University, senior Maddie Bauer of Stanford University and Kent State University junior Jaime Eiben. Rounding out the forward position is Bucknell University senior Alexis Gannon and UNLV senior Lily Sender. The remaining midfielder is Duke University junior Imani Dorsey.
