AUSTIN, Texas – Baker University (Kan.) junior quarterback Logan Brettell tops the 2016 Academic All-America® College Division Football Team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Brettell, the College Division Academic All-America® of the Year, has produced a 3.82 cumulative G.P.A. while studying public relations.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® College Division football team spotlights student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
Brettell reeled in his first CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors this year. From Overland Park, Kansas, Brettell has turned in one of the best offensive seasons in Baker history, leading the Wildcats to a 12-0 record. He has garnered Heart of America Athletic Conference South Division Offensive Player of the Year and conference Offensive Player of the Week four times.
Brettell leads the nation in passing yards with 4,150 and has thrown a Baker-record 42 touchdowns. He also broke the school mark for scoring passes in a game with seven against Culver-Stockton College. He has established single-season records record for passing yards and completions (327).
Second-ranked Baker has advanced to the NAIA Football Championship Series quarterfinals for the ninth time. Brettell has lead the Wildcats to their 15th postseason appearance.
University of Saint Francis (Ind.) led the team with three honorees as four institutions boasted of multiple selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® College Division football team. Dakota Wesleyan University, Morningside College and Taylor University each had two. Nine members of the squad guided their teams into the 2016 NAIA Football Championship Series.
The 24-member CoSIDA Academic All-America® College Division football team combined for an average G.P.A. of 3.81. Two had 4.0 G.P.A – Matt Johnson of Saint Xavier University and Gunnar Orcutt from Peru State College.
Six members of the College Division Academic All-America® team took their second consecutive nod – Morningside offensive linemen Austin Anfinson and Chad Bertagni, offensive lineman Hallick Lehmann from Concordia (Neb.) University, tight end Hans Lundberg of Taylor, offensive lineman Zachary Minardo of Saint Francis (Ind.) and Drew Philson from Olivet Nazarene University. Lundberg joined exclusive company in gaining his third Academic All-America® distinction.
Anfinson, a senior from Hinton, Iowa, has a 3.87 cumulative G.P.A. with majors in biology and chemistry. Anfinson became a first-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference choice.
Bertagni, a senior from Omaha, Nebraska, has a 3.96 cumulative G.P.A. with majors in biology and chemistry. He has contributed to a Morningside offensive attack that tops the NAIA with 577.4 total yards per game and ranks second with 52.5 points a contest.
Lehmann, who hails from Albion, Nebraska, held down the role of starting left tackle along the Concordia offensive line early in the year that helped pave the way for senior running back Bryce Collins to surpass 3,000 career rushing yards.
Lundberg, a senior from Houston, Minnesota, owns a 3.93 G.P.A. majoring in exercise science. Lundberg has caught 36 passes for 427 yards and a team-leading five touchdowns this season. His career numbers include 89 receptions for 1,001 yards and 18 touchdowns over his four-year career.
Minardo, a sociology/criminology major and offensive guard, holds a 3.72 G.P.A. Minardo grabbed second-team Mid-States Football Association All-Mideast League acclaim. Minardo rounded out four offensive linemen who were two-time Academic All-Americans.
Philson, a senior from Horton, Michigan, has maintained a G.P.A. of 3.98 majoring in actuarial science. Philson picked up honorable-mention Mid-States Football Association All-Midwest League accolades. Philson provided Olivet Nazarene with 55 tackles, four passes broken up and two interceptions this year and 131 tackles and three interceptions in his three-year career.
Other members of the offense are wide receivers Hayden Adams of Dakota Wesleyan and T.J. Spykstra from Northwestern (Iowa) College; running backs Bryce Lidtka of Dordt College and Brock West from Evangel University; and offensive lineman Zac Lawson of Lindsey Wilson College.
On the defense are linemen Patrick Cleary of Midland University, Hunter Cox from Concordia (Mich.) University, Doane’s Aaron Hanlin and Lucas Sparks of Saint Francis (Ind.); linebackers Orcutt, Adam Bormann of Dakota Wesleyan and Alden Mann from Wayland Baptist University; defensive backs Johnson, Nate Moore from College of Idaho and Josh Woodard of the University of St. Francis (Ill.). Special teams were represented by Saint Francis (Ind.) kicker Ryan Nix and Taylor punter Brandon Haan.
