Ed Hill, the face of Howard athletics for three decades, will step down next year
by Jerry Bembry and Morgan Moody

When a friend invited Ed Hill to join Howard University as the school’s assistant sports information director back in 1983, the North Carolina native jumped at the opportunity. Within months, that friend was gone, and Hill assumed the role as the school’s sports information director (SID) on an interim basis.

He’s been there ever since.

After 33 years, Hill is an institution. He’s worked more consecutive football games (371) than any SID in the country. And some of the greatest minds in media relations got their start working with Hill at Howard, including Teri Washington (former director of communications for the NBA and the Denver Nuggets), Chevonne Mansfield (director of media relations, American Athletic Conference), Bruce Speight (senior director of media relations, New York Jets), Romanda Noble-Watson (sports information director, Claflin University) and Tiffany White (communications coordinator, Los Angeles Rams).

Hill was honored at the Howard University Hall of Fame ceremony recently. “From Michael Wilbon to Jim Trotter to Gus Johnson, I’ve been able to work with some incredible people in my 33 years,” he said. “This journey has been incredible.”
