Meet the National Winners of the 2015-16 CoSIDA Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest

The sacrifice of one stranger for a stranger led to a touching story by Scott Eddy of St. Bonaventure (N.Y.) taking the

National Story of the Year honor as the 2016 CoSIDA Fred Stabley Sr. Writing contest winners have been announced.

Eddy collected the highest award with his entry entitled: “Ultimate Team Player: St. Bonaventure’s Sinclair Takes Part in Bone Marrow Donation Program”.  The story was entered in the Athlete Profile category.

“Mr. Eddy captured the essence of college sports in his story about a softball player giving of herself in the most selfless of ways,” One national judge said.  “Providing a bone marrow transplant to an unknown recipient and costing herself the time to train and prepare for her senior season, Ms. Sinclair epitomizes true sportsmanship. Mr. Eddy expertly made us feel a part of the process from beginning to end.”

Six other awards were claimed at the national level as well with John Heisler of the University of Notre Dame winning the Blog category for “Last Word for Wake Forest”.  5749

The University of Montana’s Joel Carlson topped the Event Coverage category with “Griz Open Stitt Era with Memorable Win”.

Lastly, in the Story With Video category, Justin Lafleur of Lehigh University (Pa.), with help from Jessica Filipek, claimed the prize for “Lehigh Athletics Holds 17th Annual Adopt-A-Family Community Event”.

The 2016 contest drew 375 total entries with the Athlete Profile category leading the way with 85 stories.  Submissions were first judged at the district level with district winners advancing to a national committee.

The 2017 contest will include entries written from January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016.  Just a reminder: Association members are only allowed to submit one (1) entry per category and each entry can only be used in one (1) category.  So please, submit ONLY your BEST!
