Volunteer 15 participants served their communities as tutors, mentors, coaches, scout leaders, firefighters, humane society advocates, working with Special Olympics and missionaries, to name a few, aside from their day-to-day duties as strategic communicators for college athletics.
The CoSIDA Volunteer 15 program is an initiative to get CoSIDA members more involved in their communities. The program is designed to help promote the great efforts and success our members have in their communities. To qualify, CoSIDA members had to volunteer at least 15 hours during the school year. The program is administered by the CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee.
The program continues to grow and has great support as 65 percent of this year’s participants completed the Volunteer 15 program last year.
Two groups had 100 percent participation as 17 members of the CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee and all four of the CoSIDA staff members successfully completed the Volunteer 15 program. In addition, 10 members of the 2015-16 CoSIDA Board of Directors completed the program.
Participants didn’t stop at the 15-hour threshold as 56 percent of them volunteered 30 or more hours, 26 logged over 50 hours, 11 volunteered over 100 hours and four individuals logged 200 or more hours. Those four individuals include
Barb Kowal (CoSIDA),
Patrick Osterman (Western Illinois),
Jacob VanRyn (Northeast-10 Conference) and
Chris Wenzler (John Carroll). This is the second straight year VanRyn and Wenzler logged 200 or more hours. VanRyn logged the most this past year with 270 volunteer hours serving as an AAU boys basketball coach and high school volunteer assistant boys basketball coach.
Division III SIDs for the second straight year had the most participants with 23 followed by Division I (20), Division II (11), NJCAA (four) and NAIA (two).
Get involved during the 2016-17 school year and log your hours to be counted in the Volunteer 15 program. Volunteer hours can be accrued during July 2016 through June 30, 2017. Complete your volunteer log after you have volunteered 15 or more hours and email it to
