• The Arizona Republic: Former ASU SID Richard "Moon" Mullins dies at 84
TEMPE, Ariz. – Former Arizona State University Sports Information Director Dick "Moon" Mullins has passed away at the age of 85.
Mullins served two stints as ASU's SID, from 1962-68, and again from 1972-80. In his combined 14 years with the Sun Devils, Mullins helped publicize some of ASU's greatest moments in athletics, including the emergence of Head Coach Frank Kush's football program as a national power. Mullins also helped ASU achieve its first football all-American, overseeing a national mailing campaign that led to the selection of wide receiver Ben Hawkins in 1965. He also managed publicity campaigns for consensus All-Americans Woody Green (1972), John Jefferson (1977) and Al Harris (1978).
Mullins guided his department through the transition from the Border Conference, to the Western Athletic Conference, to eventually the Pacific-10 Conference. In his career, Mullins won 10 separate national awards for excellence in publications in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. He was inducted into ASU's Athletic Hall of Distinction in 2006.
Mullins' career included work with the Denver Broncos, Phoenix Roadrunners and he served as the first public relations director for the NBA's Phoenix Suns.
Mullins is survived by his four daughters, whom he lovingly referred to as "the four M's", Margy, Marcy, Marty and Molly, as well as his brother Don Mullins, and five grandchildren. There are no services planned.
