AUSTIN, Texas – Senior forward Gabriella Mencotti of Grand Valley State University and senior goalkeeper Carlos Rubio Garcia of Ohio Valley University headline the 2017 Academic All-America® Division II Men's and Women's Soccer Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.

Mencotti has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II women's soccer, while Garcia has been tabbed the Academic All-America® of the Year award winner for Division II men’s soccer.

A finance/marketing major with a 3.73 GPA, Mencotti is a repeat first team selection from 2016. She was the leading scorer in Division II for the second year in a row, finishing with 30 goals and 10 assists for 70 points. The native of Novi, Michigan finished her career with 85 goals and 215 points, each of which ranks second in Laker history. Her 43 assists ranks third all-time at Grand Valley State. She led GVSU to a 20-4-0 record this year, reaching the Elite 8 before losing to top-ranked Central Missouri. During her four seasons, the Lakers won two national championships (2014 and ’15) and finished as the national runner-up in 2016. Grand Valley State had an 88-9-4 record during that period. Mencotti was the 2016 D2CCA Player of the Year and an NSCAA All-American. She is a four-time All-GLIAC first team selection and was named the 2017 GLIAC Offensive Player of the year.

A senior sports management major with a 3.92 GPA, Rubio Garcia led Ohio Valley to a first-ever Great-Midwest Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the Midwest Regional. The Fighting Scots advanced to the regional championship game before falling to Rockhurst University 1-0 in overtime. They finished the year with a 17-2-4 record, with Rubio Garcia playing every minute in goal. A native of Valencia, Spain, he posted a Division II-best 14 shutouts while allowing just 11 goals for a 0.46 GAA. He was recently named to the D2SIDA All-Midwest Region team, and was named the G-MAC Defensive Player of the Year. He is now a two-time All-G-MAC selection.
