Kevin Politz of Wake Forest, Meghan Hegarty of Navy headline CoSIDA Academic All-America® NCAA Division I Soccer Teams

AUSTIN, Texas – Wake Forest University senior defenseman Kevin Politz and United States Naval Academy senior midfielder Meghan Hegarty highlight the 2017 Academic All-America® Division I soccer teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
Politz has been named the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I men’s soccer, while Hegarty earned the distinction of 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I women’s soccer.
 
A mathematical business major with a 3.94 GPA, Politz was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2017. Additionally, he was named to the All-ACC Second Team. Playing for the No. 1 ranked Demon Deacons, Politz helped his squad to a 19-2-2 record. He anchored a back line, which tallied 10 shutouts and a 0.55 goals-against average. Politz also scored the game-winning goal in a victory over No. 12 Providence. As a junior, he was named Third Team All-ACC.
 
A now three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® selection, Hegarty caps off her career by headlining the first team, after earning second team honors in 2016 and third team honors in 2015. A senior operations research major with a 3.97 GPA, Hegarty was named the 2017 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year. She closed out her final season with the Midshipmen scoring two goals and four assists. Hegarty is a three-time All-Patriot League and Academic All-Patriot League team selection.
                                                                                                            
Twenty-six of the 34 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I men’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 15 student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.91.
 
The Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Soccer teams have five repeat performers – Fraser Colmer (Radford University), Clark Emerson (Bradley University), Julius Duchscherer (North Carolina State University), Hendrik Hilpert (Syracuse University) and Callum Montgomery (Charlotte) – from last year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams. Additionally, Colmer and Bryan Brody (Houston Baptist University) were named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams.
 
Thirty of the 33 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 19 student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.96.
 
Along with Hegarty, the Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Soccer teams have four other repeat performers – Alyssa Heintschel (Ball State University), Bianca St. Georges (West Virginia University), Imani Dorsey (Duke University) and Kendall Ham (Bucknell University) – from last year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams.
